Hey guys,

I have found a very cheap 32 with a rb20de auto and will be doing an engine transplant.

Now 2 options here rb20det or rb25det w/ 5 spd of course.

Basically I want it to be daily driver/drift car/general cruising.

would I be better going with stock rb25det or rb20det with mods???

Dioxide,

Got my R32 with RB25 on the road yesterday and I must say it is very smooth. I still have a minor issues to sort out with the gearbox but should have it all resolved on Saturday.

If you aren't planning on super high power outputs, the RB20DET route with matching 5 speed is a good package and hard to beat for price. My last 32 (now my Fathers) had a modified Garrett 440hp turbo and tuned ROM (tuned for 20psi). The motor has never missed a beat and gearbox is still going strong (2 1/2 yrs old). Admittingly, for daily driving the car only runs 13-14 psi.

The RB25 route is more expensive but has the advantage of greater mid range torque and is better suited to the larger turbos (GT30 or GT35). In the quest for low 11s, I will be bolting a GT3540 onto the side of the RB25 and hence the reason for the engine swap.

An intermediate level would be the RB25DET bolted to an RB20 five speed. The RB20 manual should yield fewer headaches than bolting in the RB25 gearbox. Do remember though, the RB25 ECU's cannot be rechipped.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Yeah, sounds good. I paid $3k for my motor, loom and ecu. My R33 gearbox cost me $1650. I have been quoted $1850 for motor only with no loom, ecu or turbo. Does a flywheel and clutch come with the motor or is it an auto engine? Don't forget to factor in clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, pedal box interior trim etc. You will get all this with a front cut.

Asian at Slacks Creek have quoted me $900 for a manual conversion kit for the R32. An R32 front cut from Asian will cost around $2200 for comparison sake.

Don't forget that if you want to buy an engine and wiring package you need to make sure you get everything you need. If you would like me to have a look at the package and its not too far for me to travel (I'm at Springwood) I'd be happy to help you out (it won't cost you anything).

Cheers

what's your budget?

i would say go the rb25 easily... after all it won't end up stock for long :D

but if your budget doesn't permit, then go for the rb20 and you still won't be dissappointed...

  • 2 years later...

i had to decide this a few months ago between a build rb2.2 with cams forgies and all the rest of the fruit vs a stock rb25, i chose the 2.2 its fairly fun with 300@ the wheels got an apexi turbo, computer etc.. now that im @ the 300mark im finding that its guna b pretty hard to reach a high hp output looking @ gettin a 3037 turbo and guna b strugling to reach 400rwhp... if ur after big hp 400+ go 4 the rb25 itl b alot cheeper, i kinda wish i went with the rb25 but the rb20 is a fkn awsome engine good fun with high revs gl with ur car m8

    • Oh wow, it's easy to forget how cheap these can be. Probably the cheapest way to travel. Though people in cars here tend to be morons and I would not feel very safe. Were scooters ever big in Australia? It used to be the thing growing up in Europe ~20 years ago. 50/70/125ccm Peugeot or Yamaha and some others. Utterly obnoxious Polini race exhausts. Kick stands that slant as much as possible. So loud. So much noise for really not moving very fast at all. But it felt cool at the time. Not sure where I'm going with this, but there is an aftermarket for mopeds! Though I'd have pictured you more for a Goldwing kind of guy after growing out of the Harley.
    • You need to know I am sorry for this.
    • As the MX5 isn't apparently "manly" enough, and I need something for runs to the local shops, and also take to my part time job at the salon, basically I can keep the MX5 away from car parks and stuff......like "flying lockers", I was wondering what I could buy to fix this issue LOL, I pick up a new Yamaha 125 Delight this arvo from Trooper Lu, basically a R1 that you can fit a slab of beer on between your feet, also, it was $29400 cheaper than a R1, so actually it's 2 x better than a R1
    • Nah. H2S. H2S is "rotten egg gas", which is what is associated with no cat. SO2 is equally nasty, and if you've ever smelt it you'll know all about it. More of a choking, acid in the back of the throat sort of thing. But you can only smell it in a narrow range up to about 1ppm. Above that, it irritates your mucous membranes, but you don't smell it.
    • Kicked the 34 in the guts, she won’t be seeing the road till I get the 31 mobile again.  wont be long and she’s a bit of a garage princess anyway haha
