removing cooler piping and finding a bit of engine oil in there

best thing to stop this would be to install a oil catch can i believe

are there any other things u can do

anyone know of any places that make or install these, as i want a close to 100% hidden oil catch can for the obvisious reasons

any help will be good

thanks

Steve,

I belive your right, as the catch-can provides a closed circuit for the oil back into the engine to be burn, whereas the oil breather allows the oil out to atmosphere. Oil breathers will also cause an oily film over your windscreen, so the catch-can is the better idea.

R33-JET,

Catch-cans are great, but make sure that when it is installed that the oil lines do not get kinked, as this will casue oil to be pulled through the engine, it happened to mine, I saw this puff of white smoke, but I figured it out and fixed it straight away.

The blow by vapours from the crank case, get plumbed into the rocker cover and from there back through the turbo and are burnt in the cylinders. Problem is that the vapours have some oil in them. This oil can (and probably will) coat the inside of the intercooler, reducing its efficiency. A catch can, only filters the oil and allows the vapours to be plumbed back into the cylinders to be burnt. A breather will filter the oil before passing the vapours to atmosphere. It is generally considered to be necessary to think about a catch can as you start to increase your boost.

Hope this is right, please correct if wrong, or anything else to add.

Edit: Sorry Steve, we were both writing at the same time, but I think between us we covered most of the bases

The purpose of all catch-cans/oil breather systems is to release the oil vapour from the engine. As the engine heats up the oil lubricating it becomes a vapour, in a vapour form it doesn't lubricate and can form a higher pressure sitting on-top of the engine. Skylines traditionally have a crank vent which is a vavle which allows oil vapour to escape into the air intake system. The oil is then fed into the engine and burnt.

As the catch-can is the same in functionality to the factory system then it is legal. The oil breather serves the same purpose but vents the vapour to atmosphere.

By relieving the vapour pressure the engine works better, and is not as likely to detonate.
