It is now being mandated in racing to put kevlar over the top of composite parts to stop them shattering as well.

And on the weight issue, most fabricators don't really know what they are doing when it comes to carbon and treat it like fibreglass so you end up with a product heavier than the aluminium parts anyway.

Given the recent threads it would seem the legality of the carbon bonnet seems to remain in a grey area, or at least whether or not you will be booked for it.

the two rules that apply are

ADR 12 Glare reduction in field of view.

ADR 69 Full frontal Impact occupant Protection

DOTARS told me that for the 32's ADR69 does not apply but not 100% on the 33's, they did not mention them.

The other usual rules apply with hinging and latching and scoops.

So that means that on a 32, a fibreglass bonnet, carbon fibre or aluminium bonnet is completely legal as long as there is no excessive glare and hinges and is latched correctly.

I do not see why this would be different for an R33. I would seriously contest any fines that have been issued as this has come from Department of Transport themselves.

May we have copies of this? I am a 32 owner in want of a carbon bonnet after my little hail dance incident. Let's see hail dint that ferker.

Yes, you may all have copies of this....just pay the $70 for a copy of the ADR and it's all there.

Other than that, there is a member who has a copy but I cannot remember who he was. He posted it in a reply to someone once so you might be able to do a search and ask him about it.

yeah, i would suggest that people with GTST's get the CF bonnet resprayed a normal colour so that its not as obvious to the cops?? I would just save so much hassle with the cops!!

Anyone with a GTR & a CF bonnet must really want to save every gram!! as said above the aluminium bonnets are prob .5kg heavier........other than that it sucks because the CF Bonnets look hawt!!!!

this of course excludes squizz, sorry to hear about the hail damage after the storm!!

i would love a copy of the ADRS ^^

I talked about this with Ben at Hardcore Racing today, he is a mechanical engineer and he said that mods should only be defected by accredited persons as he can certify something but any wally with a badge can defect it and then its up to you to defend it, to this end he has a deposition to the police asking to clarify this and he is in a postion to change this FU system by lobbying. As to my bonnet he told me the ADRs for that year of production (1996) apply to my car and what will pass for mine could be different for a 1997 car and so on, and as the years go on the tougher the rules, so a 1988 car will have less restrictions than a 1998 car etc.

If I find out more I will keep you posted.

Also, for bonnets, whats the point? (apart from if you have a cooling problem) as an Aluminium GTR bonnet is probably only .5 to 1kg heavier than most 'carbon' bonnets out there

there is no real point to it on a gtr as probly more then 90% of the so called "carbon fibre" bonnets in australia are fibreglass bonnets with a carbon fibre skin on them making them heavier then the aluminium and illegal,

makes it in the same category pretty much as putting diff bov's on the gtr even though the stock ones are good for more power/boost then most gtr's in qld are making and also have the advantage of being legal.

I have a wet c/f bonnet (fibreglass/cf overlay) on my z33, it came with an aluminium bonnet too but the c/f is lighter....but i just wanted it for the looks, i haven't checked to see if it's legal but my insurance company has just knocked me back for haveing it, i have a insurance broker seeing who he can find for me.

    • Update time!  The JZX110 had some maintenance needing to be done, so a lot of the seals with replaced to fix some oil leaks. Also used this opportunity to whack on a front mount that I'd bought some time ago.  I also finally got the rear lip painted and fitted.  I then got the exhaust done. It's just a catback for now. Custom made 3" stainless with a turn down. I could have a tip coming out, but it will require cutting the rear lip and possibly the bumper itself. So far I do like and it's made the car a little more zippy.  Close out with some nice pictures of the cars and a sneak peek of what's next.

    • Just something I found searching for more info on Emotion R, apparently the ECR33 Skyline GTS25t was either originally black, or there were two of them, the black one being the original demo car, then building a white one which was part of the 1997-onwards (to at least 2008!) Cockpit Tatebayashi Tokyo Auto Salon booth demo cars. It appears that Emotion R closed down in 2008 and was declared bankrupt in 2010: http://bank-db.com/hasan/208365.
