Thought I'd start a thread on the 30DE hybrids. There is a biiig discussion for the 30DETs in the turbo section, and I'd like some discussion and past experiences from anyone here that has done this conversion or is unsure (like me :)).

Benster seems pretty keen on this conversion, and I'm still looking into it, to see if the power gains will be worth doing. Don(?) I believe has done this with his red wagon, and Megalla.

Anyone have dyno graphs? 1/4 Mile Times? Costs Involved?

So far:

Head: RB25/RB26 (26 would be better but costly)

VVT: Would be better for NA applications, but easier without VVT

Block: RB30E

Pistons: RB25DE Pistons (Benster has confirmed to give a 10.5:1 CR) What about lightweight hypeuretic?

Oil Pump: I believe the stock RB25DE one would be able to be used?

Fuel Pump: I believe the stock RB25DE one would be able to be used?

Cams: Stock? Bigger cams?

ECU: Chipped 32? PFC???

very impressive 467hp (348Kw) @ 6000rpm - 17psi compression

running a TO4E turbo and PULP and i asumme that the power is at the flywheel (cause the article says that the engine went to the engine dyno...duh!)

and it has links to a mag article that has done the same thing - i think that the article is exactly what was done there - the website was just what the mag said - thats what it looks like anyway

A friend of mine has built one of these, last dyno he got 137rwkw can't remember the torque figures, he did a 15.2 1/4 mile, meremere NZ.

After having a few problems he ditched the VVT and put in a RB20DET intake cam. He has used stock fuel pump and oil pump, but added a adjustable fuel pressure regulator for good measure.

usherly, thanks for the help but I was talking about the 30DE...

it is isn't it?

ohhhh...do u mean the power stats

but they are from a rb30DE hybrid?!

sorry i don't get what u mean

EDIT-----

woops sorry - i just realised the rb30DE not the rb30DET

hahahahahahahahaha...damn im stupid

still it gives a lot of info on the pros and cons of it and why they choose what they did

ohh..u know anyway - u read the site, im just crapping on now

Rachael: 137rwkw and 15.2 sounds pretty good... Don(?) on the forums here (with the red wagon) has managed a 14.7 - that is with pretty much rb25 bits - pretty good :D

I am currently doing a little research into using the 26 head, and bigger cams and lightweight pistons - This is the tricky bit, cos it starts to get quite expensive - and may as well go the turbo route... There doesnt seem to be many people who have done a worked RB30DE hence the lack of power figures, torque figures and 1/4 mile times.

Still keen on a N/A motor for something different, insurance and yet keep the power figures up without pouring too much money (and no nos :P)

From memory the R32 RB25DE (non VVT) had smaller combustion chambers than the R33 RB25DET. It has been 5 years, so don't count on it, best to measure it up first. If the RB25DE combustion chamber was the same size as the RB25DET combustion chamber, then you would get ~12 to 1 compression ratio with the extra stroke (capacity) provided by an RB30 crank ie 20% more capacity being squeezed into the same size combustion chamber.

Gary's thoughts on CR ratio's.

no worries Usherly - thnx for the input

yep ive done it

rb30e with rb25de head ( r33 ) with vvt . has the rb25de pistons ( 10.5 -1 compression )

modified xf falcon tb now 68 mm throttle plate . rehashed rb30e extractors . rb25det injectors . malpassi adjustable fuel pressure regulator , bosch 040 in tank fuel pump . stock cams , head not modified just port matched to manifolds , stock rb25de ecu , apexi safc 2 fitted .

rb25de gearbox and stock non lsd 3.7 ratio diff

havnt had it on a dyno

have done around 30000 kms on it since march 2004 , no probs .

i with stock parts (rb30e and rb25de) considering you own a gts25 it wud be eaily done under $1000.

I've seen Don's car on TV and it looks pretty good, his 14.7 wud surely give some stock gtsts a scare...

Most of us are under 25, and it certainly would be good on the insurance for an NA Motor to pull some nice power, torque and 1/4 mile times.

In the end I think I'd save on insurance for those 5-6 years it wud take for me to own a turbo motor....

Still doing a bit of research and provided most of the work is done yourself a full worked NA motor wud be around 4-5grand (pistons, head, ecu and tuning being one of the most expensive bits)

Thanks for the post! Any problems you ran into during the build?

Most of us on here would already have the RB25DE, so to build the engine, costs would be:

- RB30E bottom end ($400?)

- new bearings etc for bottom end ($200?)

- labour to fit RB25DE pistons and new bearings ($500?)

- new head gasket ($100?)

- adjustable fuel pressure regulator ($200?)

- new fuel pump ($300?)

- Apexi SAFC + dyno tuning ($500)

- Porting head ($300?)

Estimated total (please correct me, I just guessed the prices) - $2,500

How much did it cost you to build yours DON? Did you need larger injectors? Is the new throttle body necessary or just a nice addition to help it breath easier?

Would there be room for the bonnet to close still in an R33?

Thanks for your input :D

I don't want to go all out on an RB30DE with new pistons and cams and all the rest but I'm definitely interested in gaining an extra 0.5 litres displacement if the price is right. Otherwise I'll go the RB25DET or RB30DET option.

The RB30DET is more likely to add value to the car in terms of resale price imo. RB30DE would add maybe $500. RB25DET would push the resale price to just below a GTS25t.

that's a pretty conservative guesstimate Greg - sounds about right.

Don runs RB25DET injectors.

The with the Rb30 block it will sit 30mm higher, so no front strut brace, but the bonnet will close.

Personally I'm looking into the bigger cams and using the rb26 head - the throttle body doesnt sit like the 25s so an added bonus is the strut brace *should* be able to be kept.

That said a 26 head is like 1500.... already.. :D

I believe resale isnt really an option anymore for skylines, there's so many on the market now and all with extensive mods done to them.

You can get a cheap RB30E freshened up for $1300-$1800 depending on if you want it balanced etc. This includes gaskets.

The bottom ends go for around $100-$200 for a decent condition previously running motor.

I picked mine up for $150 running without the head as it was sold seperately.

A friend of mine picked up his RB30 bottom end for $100 with a blown head.

The rb26 head.. Good luck getting one for a decent price with manifolds and all the gear you need.

An Rb25 non-vct head with manifolds and everything you need goes for around $750-$1100.

I picked mine up for $750 as did the friend of mine.

Its not as simple as just porting as the head needs to be stripped and reassembled.

If you are going to do this expect to spend at least $800 on it.

You will need to spend another $275 on a VRS kit that includes a headgasket and all top end gaskets.

Replace the valve springs with either RB25DET items or RB26DETT items.

The RB25DE head and plenum won't allow the bonnet to close, the RB26 & plenum will.

I had my motor lowered around 13mm. If it were lowered only another couple of mm the strut brace will fit. It comes very close to the throttle body's inlet pipe clamps, this is where it fouls.

Resale with an RB30DET is likely to be less than a modified standard motor. UNLESS it has been registered.

heres what i spent on it , will probably scare me when i add all this up .

r33 rb25de engine with harness and ecu $ 1100

timing belt , piston rings big end bearings and gasket set about $ 450

auto elctrician to wire it up $ 500

rb23 det 370 cc injectors $ 150 second hand

injectors clean and test $ 130

malpassi fuel press reg about $ 180

bosch fuel pump 040 , new about $ 250

throttle body mods , about $ 120

apexi safc new $ 475

now whats that add up too , gees thats $ 3355 .

mind you didnt do it all at once . the fuel press reg , bigger injectors and cleaning , bosch fuel pump were all done over a time span of about a year .

i built up the engine over 4 mths as i had time and money .

and i had a spare rb30e engine lieing around to start with .

THERES PIC OF IT IN MY PROFILE

    • Yes...but look at the numbers. There is a tiny tiny fraction of the number of Joules available, compared to what is used/needed. Just because things are "possible" doesn't make them meaningful.

    • Somehow Vertimass/Oak Ridge National Labs has figured out a catalyst that can convert ethanol into C9-C10 hydrocarbons in basically a single step without ending up with a bunch of ethylene or similar waste products: https://patents.google.com/patent/WO2023224867A1/en I still don't think anything like this will keep us from needing to transition to EVs regardless along with all kinds of other electrification, but things like this will go a long way towards alleviating the problem of how to electrify things like planes. Renewable diesel is seemingly an easier problem as well, Chevron is already running refineries for the stuff and the primary feedstock is tallow and other waste fats from agriculture.
    • Ok so I have sorted everything with my uniclutch and  i can offer up a bit of feedback and some things that might help others.    I found problems with factory damper line. Weird shit and had trouble with peddle adjustment    I used this https://au.gktech.com/products/r33-gts-t-skyline-braided-clutch-line?_pos=2&_sid=22b01b9b9&_ss=r Also when adjusting peddle leave a bit of play. You can get into a over stroke condition easy.. Make sure you can push the slave forward after adjusting to confirm fluid can return to master then you will need to pump it up heaps…..not sure why but that’s how it is.    last thing the splined adapter is machined perfectly. If your input shaft is old like mine was I would put a bit of valve grinding paste on it and stroke it like a 15 year old. Just to give it a tad more clearance and to better match it to the spline.    reason is on a near flat shift I have had situation where the peddle returns a millisecond after you lift from the clutch. No slip or anything but I reckon this is due to tolerance on the spline being way tighter than stock clutch and binding for a sec. I think this will go away but also my spline was old. Box is old so I guess I should have checked better. It’s a super neat fit.    it feels light as and holds awesome without any noise
