A while ago i looked at an EVO and RX7 they had. Still need a trailer and a car with a tow ball which are negatives, but still.

They seem like good value, but i think the margin they are making in the car is still a bit too high, but you cant really tell unless you know the auction price. But a nothing special stocka R32 GTST for $8,999 is higher then i would have expected.

I brought my car in for rally use. Its not hard to do yourself but you need PC/NC/NR/IR cams license to bring it in. Once its in all you need is an L2S.

If it was imported for "Rally Use" you can get it regoed in NSW and other states I think under the dedicated rally car scheme which lets you drive to events, practice and workshops. This is not available if it came in for "Race use" so check the import approval it makes a big difference and you cant change it later.

Finally, I can't see why you would buy one already here, just import yourself. There is no compliance or engineering fee and its a really low margin business. My GTR was 9k all up landed.

Hi Duncan, if you can help me out as i'm gonna need some of your advices. I'm a GTR driver and just like most others, i love to go on track, well i did at Phillip Island and did a shit time.

I guess the main reason is i'm too afraid to loose it and stack it. Thats' the only car that i've got. I used to have a 33 and my mate stuck it then only gave me half of whatever it was worth so i had to fork out all i had to buy this 32GTR cos' i love skyline too much.

So you can guess my acount balance at the moment, i try hard to go on track, but to mantain the car, tyres, tuning...cost too much not to consider the car is not to use for track only but daily driving as well.

Lately i'v been thinking of selling it ( HEART BREAK ), buy something more comfortable then imported a GTR under the RACE ONLY section. Race hard, no fear, no cops issue...ect

I heard i'll need LS3 license to bring one over, what require to get an Ls3? How much paper work, issue and how long to bring one in? According to your experience, who, which would be best to deal/work with ?

Thanks

My dream is always just to have a nice car for daily driving, and the race car for the track.

Are you required to do a certain amount of CAMS registered events each year to be eligible to import one?? I think I read somewhere you had to nominate which event you were going to be using the car in for it to be accepted?

Something like a $10k WRX or the like would be great. Even better, owning one road registered version, and one done up race version with $10k worth of parts in case anything happened

Seeing as you are in Bris I assume you would be doing some QR sprint days with a view to going on to the AASA Top Gear race series at QR

The AASA race licence is the equivalent of the CAMS C3 or C4 licence and so may be enough to get your car into the country. to get one you need to have done five QR sprint days and attended the safety briefing on a Top Gear day or been observed with 10 consistantly fast laps during the qualifying session on a Top Gear day.

The Top Gear series consists of 6 race days aprox 2 months apart finishing with a grand final for the year.

Each race meeting consists of Qualifying laps on the Sportsman circuit then 2 races on each of the Sprint,Clubman and National circuits for a total of 6 races on 3 different circuits....not bad value for $120.00.

Incidently my race car is an R33 GTS25T...just as much fun and a h*ll of a lot cheaper to race than a GTR

There is no such thing as an LS3... if you want to import it for Rally Use, like I did mine (First half serious event for the GTR is Rally Burnie in 2 weeks!), you need a CAMS National Rally Licence.

The National Rally licence costs less than $200, I think you need to do a CAMS Medical ($100) (I just added the Rally component to my National Circuit licence and you need to do a medical for that so I assume Rally is the same), you need to do an on-line CAMS Rally Lecture and do a observed licence test at a hillclimb or supersprint etc.

Its all simply stuff, but make sureyou have evidence of the Rally Licence, if you just apply with an L2S you application will be rejected and if you only have an National Circuit Licence then the approval will only be for Race.

Rally rego varies from state to state...

Check before you jump cos the restricions differ.

I am selling my GTS-t which is fully complianced and currently fully rego'd in Tassie. Has weld in 6 point with intrusion bar cage and is log booked...

The price is right and I have some spares to add like D01j'S PADS, 02'S and if you are serious DMS with circuit/targa springs.

Currently putting a second hand engine in... PM me if you're interested.

Gotta get a four wheeler to keep up with you SB!!!

TT

IMHO a dedicated race car is a great idea for anyone who is any more than an every now and then circuit goer.

There are just too many compromises running your road car on the track. Suspension, brakes etc etc

And of course.....remember never take a car to the track that you can't afford to write off :)

  • 4 weeks later...

you can buy one here already ... you just cant import one yourself with a C3 licence or above!

rally rego could not be gotten unless you have a rally licence.

OMY-08S -- $35K .. wish i had that budget!

almost, you can get rally rego if you have an L2S as well.

really ... cool didn't know you could do that. still alot of red tape to go through to get it???

when you import it. do you have to specify that you require it for rally use? as in different to race use?

Duncan you know about what kind of rego you need for things like the nsw road rally and targa etc?

Maybe a bit of history will help.............

Rally cars used to have all sorts of problems when driven on normal roads. Stuff like to and from rallies, transport stages etc. Then along came targas and the problems just got worse, with overseas competitors, left hand drive cars, non compliable imports etc.

For a CAMS event you get a permit, if it involves any road bits then a Govt approval is required. Despite having that approval the EPA and the Police used to sit at the end of a rally or on a transport stage and book the whole field. Even safety stuff like roll cages, 6 point harneses, helmets and fire extinguisher systems were getting busted. This was most embarassing, so CAMS applied to the State Govt's for a Rally Rego Scheme so that cars could have mods for rallying and not get busted.

There are some rules;

1. The car MUST be imported for Rallying (mine actually says race/rally). Once it is here you can't change it. As far as I cna see you can get a normal car "rally rego'd", would make defects a thing of the past.

2. The car has 2 inspections, one for rego (blue slip in NSW) and one for rallying (CAMS log book). It is best if you can find one place that does both (Ben Ruggles does that in Sydney, there are probably some in the other states). On the inspection documents are listed all of the mods, roll cage, extra lights. low exhaust, etc. You have to carry a copy of that list with you at all times. If you make other major mods (changing a turbo/camshaft/exhaust doesn't count) you have to get it re-inspected.

3. You pay normal rego and green slip costs, no discount for rally cars. It has to be registered every year just like a normal car. You get 2 rego stickers, one for normal and one that says it's a rally car. That way if you get pulled over the EPA/cops know.

4. When you want to drive it you have to apply for a permit number from your local CAMS office. This sounds like a pain but it's not so bad. At the start of he year I send a list of all the likely events that we might want to enter, I don't have to enter them. I also add in a few running in and testing days just before each event. All together we used 30 odd permits in one year. I don't think it would be a good idea to try for 365 days of testing.

5. Just because it says "rally rego" doesn't mean dirt rally. A targa is a "rally", so the normal mods you would do for a circuit race car would be OK. This means braided brake lines, side exhaust, big turbo, any ECU, gauges, 6 point harness, roll cage, etc etc

The initial paperwork and inspection is a pain in the ass, plus the cost of getting a CAMS licence, but once you have done that it is simply a matter of renueing each year. The CAMS website has all of the details and forms that you need to fill in.

I am not aware of any "drag rego" scheme between ANDRA and the State Govt's, this seems to be purely a CAMS arrangement.

Hope that helps:cheers:
