Hi all,

I know this question has been asked and debated before but just thought i'd try and get some opinion between more then just two brands.

The car they are to be fitted to has twin n1 turbos mounted on stock turbo manifolds and exit through stock dumps atm into a nice front pipe and then into a straight through 90mm exhaust with cannon at the end.

So far i have heard the best things about the CES dump pipes as well as the hks ones. Haven't heard anything at all about the nismo or tomei or power enterprise ones before, so i'd appreciate anything you have to share :(

Here are some i know of.... let me know if i missed any others :uh-huh:

Thanks

Jamie

HKS - ~$675

Tomei - ~$750

Power Enterprise - ~$860

Nismo - ~$1220

CES Racing - ~$800 (ignore the front pipes, only pic i could find)

no doubt in my mind the ones to get are these:

there is a group buy for them atm in the group buy section. $1100 delivered. They are trust dumps and front pipes for that price. Very nice. :(

They aren't an option in this case, unfortunately, as i allready have a set of front pipes that i never want to replace. That is a great deal though and a very good design by the looks of it they are seperated for a good foot or so

their a pain in the ass to fit i beleive. i remember me and sasha or kris were trying to put them on someones car..

I have the hks dumps .... very nice piece of kit

Also RSR tuned length front pipe :)

Yeah i already have this front pipe for it so all the trust offerings are ruled out.... i'll probably just go hks.

i still reckon sell the front pipes you have and buy the trust dump/front set-up.

The HKS ones are a compromise as they are desinged to be a 'bolt-on part' meaning they had to be able to work with stock type front pipes. so they are very short and don't have a very long seperation of the wastegate/turbine exhaust gas. for a bolt on dump sure they are good, but the trust as a complete solution are miles ahead. serioulsy trust dumps for $1100 in your hand or HKS ones for ~$650. sell you front pipes for $400 and the price is pretty much the same :)

Grrr.. lets see if the forum works this time.

Name a dump pipe that isn't a PITA to fit on a GT-R? Blitz/Nick once mentioned installing dumps without removing the turbo, but no details and AFAIK you are basically forced to remove the turbos. In another thread, John from UAS said it takes their guys 15 hours to do a manifold swap on a GT-R: doing the dumps is basically the exact same job. Keep in mind that's 15 hours in a professional shop with hoists, lightining, tools, etc all at hand, not to mention that the mechanics are probably able to go through the steps in their sleep.

I agree with Beer Baron: if you're not going to change the front pipes, you're going for a compromise. Remember (to steal a page out of SK's book) that most Jap tuning parts are designed to be bolt on because Jap. mechanics charge an arm and a leg. Hence even when you get the HKS split style, they are designed to be modular upgrades to keep installation costs down.

If you insist on keep your front pipes, out of the options listed I would go for the HKS or HKS-style: although a compromised design they are at least a split design. The Nismo's are expensive because they are Nismo and rare. The CES ones are direct HKS copies AFAIK and they charge an arm and a leg so no advantage 'buying local'. The Tomei's aren't split dumps IIRC, and from the looks of them, niether are the Power Enterprises.

You can probably get the HKS's even cheaper second hand: they are very common on YahooJP.

Lucien.

I have some MINES dump pipes on mine, they are a non split type like the tomei ones. I saw these advertised in japan for a retail of AUD $1000 which is a fair bit more than the HKS dumps. I'm guessing its because of the brand 'MINES' that they are so pricey..dunno really. I picked mine up on ebay for $340 :D

Yet to be on the car, but they're getting installed next week with new HKS GTSS turbo's :P

Why are you so attached to that set of engine pipes? You are compromising the whole system because of it. I would sell them and buy the CES turbo to cat system, if money is the reason you want to keep them. If money is not an issue go the Trust, they are a true work of art.

Either way I can asure you that the results will be worth it.;)

Yeah i wish i didn't buy the ones that i did now, i paid too much for them and don't think i'd be able to get my money back on them. I bought them thinking i was doing the right thing getting the lightest possible front pipes without thinking about compromising the exhaust flow by doing so.

Basically i paid more for the front pipes then the whole trust dump/front combo :chairshot:bonk:

All that said would the difference in flow of say the hks dumps into my front pipes, compared to trust set, make a noticable difference in the way that the turbos spool or the power curve or would it be not a huge difference?? Just wondering how far to go and whether to get what i can, and cut my losses and get the trust set still?

OK Jamie, I am glad we flushed out the full story. Are those front pipes you have titanium? If so, you won't have any trouble getting your money back.

I think you really need to do the numbers, something like this;

Paid for current engine pipes $500

HKS or CES short dumps $700

Total $1200

Sell current engine pipes $200

Loss $300

Trust turbo back with long split dumps $1100

Total $1400

They are most certainly worth the extra $200.

Stick your real numbers in the above calcs, then you can make an educated decision.:)

keep the standard ones.

Given the standard R32 GT-R ones are pretty crappyand restrictive (and R33/34 are only slightly better) and that he has aftermarket (read: larger) turbos, I would think changing the dump pipes would be removing a major restriction?

R32 and R33 dumps are identical AFAIC, but R34 GTR dumps are a big improvement - they look a bit like the Nismo dumps, but don't have the wastegate 'splitter'. I have a set to go on my car (sometime :P ). They're also of welded stainless steel construction and are quite light compared with the R32/33 cast versions.

Not saying they're the greatest thing, mind you, but definately an improvement over stock R32/33.
