Tommyk
Well guys, I have a big dilemma! I am seriously contemplating upgrading my car, a 1995 33 GTR Vspec to something along the lines of a series 8 Rx7 RS (280ps). I can pick up the Rx7 for slightly more than my GTR is worth. It would be 5 years newer - my gtr is feeling fairly old compared to the newer styling out there. The Rx7 would still be fairly quick, but would only be RWD in comparison to the GTR's AWD. WHAT should i do ? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/77562-talk-me-out-of-buying-a-s8-rx-7/ Share on other sites
flex
get a RX7 series 8... they are mad! less common than GTR for sures. though its a rotary engine, so you know theres alot of money needed for maintenance of the car. Tommyk
I suppose the biggest problem is that ive only had it for about 6 months, and ive only just spent 3 or so k on it, and its getting tuned this week at croydon which is another $700 or so ? Ideally I wanted to keep the gtr for two years and then sell it and get into property .... Cefiro_PWA
Why on earth would you put a weak-low revv'n 2JZ in a S8 when you have a high power'd 13B Twin Turbo? They are the most amazing engine's with HEAPS of potential.( requiring bolt ons) And when it comes time for turbo upgrade on the FD you can throw anything you want on it and it will still be more responsive then a GTR with 2530's! predator
Depending on how much you pay.. if the all new RX7 sees the light of day, and is anything near affordable and sold locally... the resale on your RX7 could take a smash in the pants. ferni
RX7 are nice cars, just don't think i could handle the engine rebuilds every 50,000ks. Keep the GTR, then buy a house like you planned Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/77562-talk-me-out-of-buying-a-s8-rx-7/#findComment-1418027 Share on other sites
NZM.031
go the rx7.... with the proper care and maintainance they will last aslong as any other engine... let them warm up and cool down properly... there is alot of rumours about the engines, ive heard it from a mazda mechanic that they are a really good strong engine. any engine needs rebuilds at 50000kms with the wrong driver punting it along. plus its a newer car, you've got some time up your sleeve before anything major happens, its something different, something awesome, gtr's are awesome... but my gtst looks like a gtr. goes similar to a gtr. the rx7 is a complete new world. cheers Linton Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/77562-talk-me-out-of-buying-a-s8-rx-7/#findComment-1418066 Share on other sites
gun-r32
Keep the GTR, spend the money, that you would otherwise be spending on fixing the 13b, on your house. MANWHORE
Get the FD. Who says they need to be rebuilt every 50000ks. Do you think anyone would buy one if a stock one out of the factory only lasts 50000ks? As it has been mentioned above, have an engine tuned wrongly, drive it at the rev limiter when cold, and it won't last. When set up properly, and warmed up properly, proper fluids etc, they'll cop a beating just like the RBs. Just as some people thrash RBs for 200000+ ks, rotor engines last a while too. In terms of performance, it depends what you mean by performance? Drag? Circuit? An FD will kill your gtr in terms of Drag AND Circuit work. I'd imagine that your gtr is mildly modded? so doing low 12s? The FD will do that easily. Furthermore, in terms of circuit performance, the car is about 300ks lighter. Can have a lot more power and response relatively cheaply. Weight is very balanced, unlike skylines. FD is a very nice car. I'm not being biased, I do drive a skyline afterall. «Cyph3r»
Why on earth would you put a weak-low revv'n 2JZ in a S8 when you have a high power'd 13B Twin Turbo? EDIT i realise now you meant compared to 13b..... nevermind then. I'd say go with the series 8, at least its a newer car and they are a lot less common then the gtr is, plus they look better and handle better. DaiOni
rebuild for a modified 13brew is around the 100k km mark. A stock one will exceed that considerably. Modify badly and rebuild time could come around at any time.
