Talk me out of buying a S8 Rx-7

Change the R33 GTR for an R34 GTR. Still get the 4WD and 4WS, but newer car, fresher interior, may be about to transfer your mods, less common than a R33, and if you can afford the special editions like the N1 or Nur... tasty!

I would need at least an extra 15k on top of the 33 gtr to get something in 34 gtr flavour !

Hey its nice to see that a lot of people are suggeting I keep the 33 GTR and then get into property. I mean the Rx7 sure is nice and will turn more heads, but most people are advising me against a rotary. Not surprising, seeing this is a skyline forum

I have already expressed my feelings directly to TK, but others may be interested;

We have 2 X RX7's in the race team and they are up to engine #5 this season. The 2 X GTR's are BOTH on engine number #1. The rotaries are built by a well know rotary engine builder, are well tuned, religously serviced and make great power. They have to, just to be competitive. But we still get high engine maintenance, it's a fact with rotaries. Hot days, following other cars, high humidity, minor fuel differences, altitude changes etc all give us problems.

The RB's on the other hand just keep on handling it, without problems. Same conditions, same atmosphere, same races. Pull them down at the end of the season, new rings and bearings and away they go for another year.

The last point, RX7's are 2wd and GTR's are 4wd, there is no way an RX7 will keep up with a GTR when the going is anything but dry and smooth. Targa Tas (on public roads with weather conditions) proves that every year, when was the last time a 2wd car won? The only times Jim hasn't won, he was driving a 2wd.

I know which one I would much rather own.

I don't think an RX-7 needs a cast iron, inline 6 engine in the front of it. It would completely ruin the weight distribution of the car, which is one of its greatest properties.

If anything, I'd put an SR20DET into an FD. Even then the motor is a fair amount longer than a 13B-REW, but the block should end quite close to the struts.

I love the look of the Series 8, but I'm not a big fan of rotaries. A lack of low-end torque, horrible fuel efficiency, and low engine life. I won't get into the mechanical inelegancies of the rotary engine (I had a discussion with friends, and I don't match their mechanical knowledge enough to repeat their issues with them) but, even from what I do know I don't like them.

It just depends on how hard you want to work it. As said by previous members, you will get issues IF you are racing compared to a GTR. Depends on what you are doing with it. IMO, they are sexy, I had a series 4 before I got my GTS-t, it was unmodified and I drove it for a year without a single hitch.

They can last quite a long time, even with constant crap, just don't port the hell out of the engine! A series 8 with a couple pounds more boost, mild street port and new cooler/computer will have you running very quick quarters while having rwd fun! hahaha. Rx's are less common too.

Go the RX unless you want to have comfortable passengers in the rear, caus those seats are almost worthless.

IMO sounds more like a downgrade if i were you i would keep your 33 but if your heart is more set on the rx id buy S6 preety much same thing only older when looking at the S8 , it really hasnt changed shape all that much so what dose that say about the dated look ?

You've heard my bitching about getting rid of the whale GTR last year and bought my current car....hopefully you won't be doing the same thing! ie bitching moaning and whinging when the S8 is parked on the driveway.

only buy the rx7 if you want to use your car to pull chicks. (some would consider that a pretty valid reason)

but you'll miss the ATTESA around corners and feel like less of a man.

Anyway, ive decided to keep the GTR as originally planned.

Getting tuned at CRD as we speak.

Its nice to see that as of this point in time, the GTR has more votes than the FD

Well guys, I have a big dilemma!

 

I am seriously contemplating upgrading my car, a 1995 33 GTR Vspec to something along the lines of a series 8 Rx7 RS (280ps).

I can pick up the Rx7 for slightly more than my GTR is worth. It would be 5 years newer - my gtr is feeling fairly old compared to the newer styling out there.

 

The Rx7 would still be fairly quick, but would only be RWD in comparison to the GTR's AWD.

 

WHAT should i do ?

Why on earth would you put a weak-low revv'n 2JZ in a S8 when you have a high power'd 13B Twin Turbo?

They are the most amazing engine's with HEAPS of potential.( requiring bolt ons)

And when it comes time for turbo upgrade on the FD you can throw anything you want on it and it will still be more responsive then a GTR with 2530's!

2JZ's arent that weak, besides any engine can be good and have alot of potential all you need is $$$$$

Well it is quite a tough decision, but if it was me, ill get the RX7, rear-wheel drive, rotary, not common, and a head turner as the GTR as well. Although the GTR has this nice chassis built soo bleh i dunno >< but go the RX7 for me =) gl in the future
