Hey y'all

Ive decided to sell my skyline because i quit my job and i dont want the hassles of ever defaulting on my car loan. Also because I think that the interest rates are total :bs:

I'll be selling my car, paying off the rest of my loan, and within 6 months, will have saved up enough money for a GTiR.

Anyways, i currently drive a NA r33 and decided that I want a GTiR. Ive been in love with them for ever and I'm real hesitant to jump into the water. Ive heard that the gearboxes are :bs: and that they guzzle fuel like nothing.

Anyone ever owned one and have any experiences with them?

I'll continue to keep my bunky as well so the GTiR wont be a daily driver.

Are the sr20det's compadible from other s-series?

I used to have one....really cool car....need some coin spent on handling...then they rock! :-) expensive to repair...some people say the g/boxes are weak but if you service them constantly they dont seem to bad....mine had 2 1/2 years of constant launches and abuse and never missed a beat :-) have fun

Ive had a couple.

Love GTiRs, can cost a bit to maintain etc, so its not a cheap car to run...

Alot of buckets around these days too...

Great little car, one of my best mates owns one.

They're responsive, they're fast... but...

They don't handle all that great stock standard. My mate spent just under $2k on handling and then it handled nice... so keep that in mind.

Maintenence can be a bit of a cost, especially with parts and for example I've -heard- (can't confirm) a clutch change is an engine out job.

They're not easy to "do up"... that is .. with my sr20 if I wanted a manifold, I just bought one and put it on.. Sure it took me 6hrs and $300 but if you did that to a GTiR it'd be $800 for the manifold and an engine out job. Similarly if you wanted to put on an exhaust, you'd have to order it or have it built, not just jump on the forums and buy one.

Stock parts are also harder to find than say a silvia or skyline, but the advantage is there is less of the GTiR on the road.

In the end I still prefer my cefiro even though the GTiR has me on the corners, my car is still so much more damn fun to drive. There's the control factor of having to keep the tail in but still apply power, and there's no wishy washy understeer feeling of a FWD car being turned AWD as you get with the GTiR.

Having said that however, that wishy washy understeer goes through the corner faster than my car ever could...

- shithouse turning circle (not what you'd expect for a small car)

- getting a bit old now, be sure to buy a 94 auction grade 3.5+

- guzzles fuel like crazy (not what you'd expect for a small car)

- lots of work to drive fast in stock form

+/- rally style driving position

+ cheap performance package for < GTR money

+ solid lifters

+ kills Subarus/commodores etc

+ still many people out there who dont expect to get owned by one

Haha i had one for about a year... great little car!! good for burning a hole in your pocket! but its the luck of teh draw tio get a good one. out of 10 i test drove only one went. and it was standard. while some others had mods...

the gti-r motor was only ever in the gti-r, and the sss 4wd bluebird turbos, but gearbox was different.

all the parts for the gti-r are gti-r and that only. not really interchangable for other sr20's

i spent alot on the gti-r as i rebuilt the motor. but from experience, they are expensive. and alot of people who know will tell you exactly the same!

if u need any more info ask. i am sure someone here can help out for sure.

mate of mine owns one, shes had it for like a month now, all i can say is there little pocket rockets, shit loads of people under estimate them until they get owned by it lol :P, it does understeer to the f***ouse but, im used of drivin my skyline.... i drover her car once and it was a fair bit different lol. i still reckon there a good little car but, but from what i read there ^^ i'd say it'd cost as much to maintain as a gtr?? lol

maybe half as much. but i havnt had the gtr for a year yet.

they do have a bad understeer. but that can be fun in the wet, when you pile on as much steer as possible and plant it for some good old 4wd drifting action.

it also can be fixed for about 3000? i beleive? someone can probably correct me there. whiteline supply a complete kit for them which helps this problem out alot. tho i never had it done.

My best mate has a GTIR engine in his N15 Pulsar.. goes very very hard :P Not much help for your thread question though hehe

Runs GT28RS turbo, bigger cooler, full exhaust etc etc. As someonestolecc said some of the parts are not so easy to get, a custom dump pipe and rest of xhaust had to be made cos we found none 'off the shelf'. Gearbox is a problem but mainly due to only being FWD on this car..still uses GTIR box though. Best 1/4 mile is 12.6@116 and 215fwkw's

dude pocket rockets go off, you can make them look good just like any car, just dont go OVER the top with cosmetics and it'll end up lookin' classy and not like somethin off a st corner in st kilda lol.

i bought a gtr.. that why he had to go.

i'd still get another one tho. but i'd have a long hard look if it was the case.

    • Sag as in the windows start to slowly open themselves, or they're just slow to go up/down with engine off?
    • It looks like it needs a big worm gear drive on it to control the rotating, not a few sloppy pins!
    • As Duncan said, first there was OBD, which few cars used, then came OBD2.   Now an interesting point, OBD2 isn't even for what you want to do. OBD2 is for emissions testing. There is some sensor data on OBD2, but it's up to the manufacturer what they're putting on it. Most scan tools operate on UDS, which like OBD2 is a standard built on-top of CAN. UDS specifies how to structure a message, what very limited things mean such as "read memory address" but it does not specify what is stored in which memory address, that is all up to the manufacturer. You either a scan tool compatible with that vehicle, or to know how to reverse engineer all the data, which can take a VERY long time and a lot of vehicles to get it right. Oh and then the manufacturer does a firmware update and changes what's where... Ask me how I know that as fact Oh, and by the time you've got the scan tool that supports all the manufacturers stuff, well, you're back at "But a consult cable and the Nissan software" The main difference being most manufacturers software these days works with the same hardware readers, as the readers are built to support J2534 which is another standard for how the PC communicates with the tool to make it do specific things on the car...
    • Rotisserie is fully assembled apart from centre connector which obviously isn't required until the car is on it. It packs away fairly neatly and doesn't take up too much room. (Now that I actually have some room after my clean up!) Overall very happy with the quality of it.  Assembly was a piece of piss.  The only thing I didn't like was that the pins that lock the rotation lock wheels in place were a bit of a dick in a bucket scenario. It allowed the arms to rotate a significant amount even when locked in place.  To fix that i measured up the hole and went and grabbed a couple of 18mm fully threaded bolts and a thread tap to suit. I ran the tap through top and bottom so it was threaded both ends.  Then just threaded the bolt through both sides.  It has made a massive difference which hopefully you can tell in the before and after video how much difference it made. 20250207_161431.mp4   20250207_161431.mp4 Hopefully back working on the car over the next few weeks.   20250207_162801.mp4
    • I think my main complaint with your idea is that there is a veneer of idealism spread across it. You want the simple numbers to make it easier, but all they will do is make it easier for someone to come to the wrong conclusion because the fine details will kick them in the nuts. As it is right now, the tiny bit of arithmetic is NOT the obstacle to understanding what will fit and what will not fit. The reality of trying it is what determines whether it will fit. If you had a "standard rule" that R34 GTT guards have that magic 100mm space from the hub face to whichever side you were worried about, and someone said "excellent, this wheel is only 98mm in that direction, I'll just go spend $4k on them and jam them on my sick ride".....they would just as likely find out that the "standard rule" is not true because the rear subframe is offset to one side by a fairly typical (but variable) 8mm on their car and they only have 92mm on one side and 108 on the other.
