Hey guys i think we are forgetting that the research they did was a bit flawed. I thought it was a widely known fact that it is more economical to wind ur windows down compared to use the aircon, but only up to about 80km/h.  This is the point when the extra drag created by the windows being open becomes greater than the power the aircon uses.

In the first test on mythbusters, run at 55mph = 89 km/h, they found that it was more economical to run the car with the aircon on.

In the second test, they ran the cars at 45mph = 72 km/h, because it wasnt safe to go around the track for that long with their shit SUVs. In that test they found it was better to go with the windows down.

It was the difference in speed that made the difference, youre still better off with the windows down at speeds up to 80km/h, then using the aircon at speeds above that.

Nope didn't know that - good to know... i guess also the aerodynamics of different cars would play a small part.

What about the putting the egg in the radiator to stop a leak?

They proved that myth was true.

What about the exploding jawbreaker myth?

They proved that true 3 times over...

I love the show, being an engineer and all its good to see a program that makes people use their brains instead of the usual american reality/comedy crap. Pity the guys are so weird, how was that bag of sludge that he was going to eat?

Didn't they also test the myth of putting sugar down someones fuel tank? Apparently it does nothing.....

they also put moth balls (ie liquid naphtalene) in the petrol

that f**cking caddy engine sounded like a drag car

the naphtalene made it run really well, really high revs with a good exhaust note

(but nobody knows what the effect of doing that is - it would be interseting to know)

i love it as well - im a first year engineer and this stuff really rocks

that bag of sludge!!! holy crap that was :werd:

he said it was 4 veg, 4 fruit and 4 grain all mashed up and blended together into diarrhoea looking shit

that dude is seriously :werd: - just like adam said - he is like a walrus with that moustache

Back to the A/C on or windows down debate, I seriously think it would have a lot to do with not only the speed the car is travelling, but how efficiently the car circulates air around it even when the windows are down.

If you get the chance to drive a variety of cars (or even just two or three different cars), try listening to and comparing how much buffeting you experience when the windows are open on the different cars you drive.

My theory is that the more buffeting the car gets, then the more air is going into the car instead of over and around the windscreen and windows, and therefore the more aerodynamic drag it would suffer at ALL speeds.

So, the myth might hold true for the SUV's that they were using for the experiment, but it might well be different using a different car.

Dunno, that's my 25 Mauritian Rupees...

well if you buy a suv, your probably an insecure soccer mum who is arrogant and wont even bother paying attention to a test like this and will go down the highway in your ****ing prado with the aircon on full, regardless of weather. oh well, they could afford the extra running cost. you would have to have more money than common sense to buy an suv.
