Ok guys, I've decided to go through with it but i dont know what to expect.

My car is sitting at around 70mm off the ground,

ive got a pod filter,

3inch turbo back with a 5inch tip,

fmic,

boost gauge (on my a pillar),

boost controller (bleed valve),

atmo BOV

i just want to know wich mods the certificate will cover and what ill have to do to get them all covered

you're joking right?

right now you'd get defected for:

- ground clearance

- unshielded pod filter

- boost gauge on a-pillar (unless it sits lower than the highest part of your dash)

- boost controller

- atmo bov

I suggest you fix these up before wasting your time and money trying to get it engineered.

i already have been defected for all that...

but if all that was fixed then i wouldnt need it to be engineered. it would already be legal.

well thats exactly what im saying i just didnt know what a engineer does

guys, the engineer isn't a magician, he works within the guidelines set by the RTA. he's there to tell you what is legal on your car and what is not. then when you have everything that is legal he will give you a report stating that fact and the police will not bother you. if on the other hand you have a certificate but still display pods and gauges on pillars etc you will get done.

You kno wi dont mean to sound drab,but why dont the engineers certify a cars emmissions as well!Im thinking that they (government-police & epa) have it his way to make more money from society through tyheir fines etc.

Think about it if there were emmisions tests at the engineers then we could slap them with a cert.

But then on that note they could be doing it the way they do it for reasons like.Not being able to trust the people involved,with the testing,to be honest.

its not about the size of the rim... its the distance between the inside of the rim and the chassi of the car.

i think they make the space bigger by maybe adding spacers and I THINK they take a chunk out of the inside of the chassi to make the space bigger. im not 100% on that though

If you make major modifications or repairs to your car then it requires an engineering signatory to ensure your vehicle still complies with the ADRs. Its not a matter of just "getting it fixed", and its not something that you need to do only after you get defected. If you weren't modifying your car in a half-arsed way, then you would have already obtained the certificate before driving the car around.

The point of an engineering certificate is to have a qualified and independent person validate that your vehicle is still roadworthy. The engineer doesn't actually do any work on your car. They look at someone else's work and ensures that its not dodgy. That's why you need to have the car legal before taking it to them, so they can sign off on it.

but id at least want my rims, exhaust, pod and lowering engineered. i dont want my car sitting any higher than it already is.

Fact: your car sits 30mm below the legal minimum.

So your desire to have your vehicle's lowering signed off by an engineering signatory is mutually exclusive to your desire to not increase your ride height.

So which one do you want more? Because you're not getting both.

If your engineering signatory does a dodgy and signs off on it anyway, the moment a cop measures the distance they'll defect you anyway (since its clearly not legal, no matter what your sheet of paper says), and if you say that your engineer signed off on it then chances are they'll investigate him for abusing his powers and have his signatory powers removed.

100mm is what the minimum is.

Pod filter is technically ok so long as it's not louder than 90db.

The exhaust will be ok so long as it's got a cat and not louder than 90db. Mine was tested at 3000rpm from 30cm or something.

Atmo BOV = no chance.

Everything else is up to whether or not it's safe.

how do you go about getting say a set of 19in rim enginered on your car?

From my interpretation of the Vehicle Standard Information (bearing in mind that I'm not a lawyer), there's no limits to the diameter of your wheel.

The VSI No. 9 (Guidelines for alternative wheels and tyres) states that your wheel track may not increase by more than 25mm. Your alternate wheel may not be more than 26mm wider than the factory rim without an engineering certificate. The outside diameter of your wheel and tyre combination can not be more than 15mm greater.

This means if your OEM wheel is 13x4, you can legally run a 22x5 rim if you can get it under the wheelarch and find tyres with a low enough profile without needing them engineered. However, a 13x5.5 wheel requires an engineer's certificate.

my car is only sitting 30mm lower than the legal limit because of the sideskirts.

it doesnt matter does it? its the lowest point of the car

the 100mm minimum is measured from the lowest point of the car. So whether its your front splitter, side skirts, or exhaust pipe, everything on your car has to sit at least 100mm off the ground.

    • There is a way, but it's not with the same cars. You need to find the same vintage of car, that we had. Realistically, that was an affordable car with aftermarket parts around. So what people need to find is a car that had a decent base in its day, and can be modified. They're looking for a car year make of 2010 to 2015 really... Aus could have done it if Holden didn't fold as V8 commodores were cheap, and if Ford didn't get expensive thanks to COVID, then you could cheaply play with FG Barras. Realistically, those are just a bit heavier, four door skylines. I'm sure the US and UK have similar cars they could find.

    • Greg speaks wisdom. These dirty old Datsuns are only value when they are cheap. When they are not cheap, there is no value. Sounds contradictory, but it's true. We are now 20 years past the hey day of modifying cheap 90s JDM cars for small amounts of money. This is a different world. If you are rich and can afford not to care about what is effectively wasting money on an old Datto shitter, then I have no reason to argue against it. But if you are wanting to experience what we all experienced back in 2005 (and I bought my car last century!) then there is no way to do it.
    • Short answer: No. Medium answer: No, because you still need to conjure the things out of thin air to bolt them to a NA to make it a NA+T. Long Answer: No - The things you need to conjure - meaning a turbo, intercooling, manifolds, exhaust, intake/manifold/piping, clutch, injectors, fuel pump, AFM (?), ECU + Wiring (woo, N/A loom fun) have to come from somewhere. You could have many scavenged these things from an OEM car that someone had upgraded from and use some of these. This will be cost prohibitive now, especially so in the USA. You'd probably pay the same for newer, upgraded components that are better than old OEM stuff from 25-30 years ago. None of these big ticket items are re-usable for the N/A car. Why not buy new and upgrade while you're there? The only real consideration is turbo and fuel sizing and determining whether you want to stay within the bounds of the OEM engine or get into rebuild territory. These limits ARE lower with a N/A motor and especially N/A gearbox at the starting point. And if you're gonna upgrade those then you may as well consider having them built to begin with. Because everyone here knows you're never far from that next engine rebuild once you start making the power you want... The cars you see on the internet and SAU etc have been built over decades. If you're really clued in... you would sell your US car to somebody for what you paid for it. You would then scour AU JDM pages or SAU and buy a car like Dose's on this forum with your powerful American Dollar. This will save you so much money in the long term. Importing it could be tricky. Or it might not because USA. I have long said the only reason 90's Japanese stuff took off was because a) Japanese people had Japanese cars so that is what they used b) Australians could import these cars to Australia with very minimal changes and use them on the road here c) Neither country had well-priced access to US or EU Sports Cars. I don't believe the JDM scene would have taken off in Australia at all if we had EU priced EU BMW M offerings, or more especially the AUS V8 Scene would never have existed if we had the multitude of US cars like Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes at the prices you folks do. After all - Do the math. I would say put a V8 in your R34 and that's the smart way forward. It is. I did it. I know this from my own experience. But at that point there's no reason to simply not buy a C5 or C6? It would be simpler and easier and cheaper and bette-
    • Reading all this... hurts lol. I have an ENR34 5MT and I paid an inflated USA price for the car alone, had to do tons of preventative maintenance past that, and so I'm over $30K USD into the car already and haven't even touched power.  I wanted to +t it. Not even trying to make GTR numbers, I'd be happy with 250hp.  Can I get away with paying much less to make that happen?
