Keep your old one, the slims have issues with the laser burning out prematurely plus no expansion bay for a hard disk. If you HDLoader it as per the HDLoader thread you won't need the laser repaired anyways.

The new ps2 is a repeat of what $ony did with the PlayStation when it neared the end of it's life. They released the PSOne (which was a bucket o crud) to inject some life & extra sales to a doomed console by making it smaller & sexier... and less reliable.

That's the truth $ony don't want us to know.

thanks datto,

so what would you suggest, get the laser fixed on my current one and chip that

or go for the HD like in your loader thread

the only thing turning me off that is the fact that it dosnt work with all games (or does it?)

whereas i am led to believe that the chipping will work with all games plus dvds etc

cheers mate

appreciate your advice as you seem to know what you're on about :P

Jimbo,

I would tweak the laser first, if that fails replace it.

the HDLoader path works for me, I CBF rummaging thru a bunch of discs to find the game I want. Much easier to select it from a list. I can boot all games that are HDloader incompatible using another mem card app, CogSwap Loader. Works just like SwapMagic (google that one too), plus a bunch of other cool apps rather than just games. All it costs is a network adaptor + HDD.

I refuse to pay for HDadvance, I have no issue downloading a hack version - the code was blatantly stolen from the original author to make $$ and all the updated code from enthusiasts in forums like this was FURTHER stolen aka HDAdvance 2.0 & 2.1

On the other hand, a modchip will boot unsigned code & all backups (of course you own the original), so just stick the disc in, away you go. The other modchip benefit is PSX backups & all region DVD support.

the criteria to decide which path to take would be:

Do I want to play DVD's from all regions & PSX games, how important is this to me ? It's the only thing HDL/HDA + CogSwap won't do that a modchip will.

Of course both is best !!

Ben,

Head on over to the Austech.Info forums, there's an Australia-wide installers directory. Be sure to have a v12 laser mod installed as well as the chip if you want it to last more than a few months.

Hope that helps you out, Lads.

Cheers for now.

    • I believe there was a similar one posted by @duggyphresh. They were re-routing their battery positive cable in the way I am also trying to achieve. Sorry, I’m new to this forum, so was a bit late to the party by a few months and so reignited the old thread, as I wanted to know how they got on with doing it.
    • Wasn't there a thread on this very subject just a few weeks ago?
    • Hi all! Looking to relocate the battery to the trunk of an R34 GTT. I want to do it using as many stock GTR components as I can (including the harness protectors from the 34 GTR that run underneath along the chassis to the engine bay). So far I’ve purchased the battery tray from a 33 GTR, as the captive weld nuts are already there just asking to be used. There is also the slight issue of now having to relocate the ABS/TC/Fuel Pump Control ECU, which in GTT’s sits right above where the battery will then sit on the tray. Has anyone already achieved this, and if you have any pics that you wouldn’t mind sharing? It would be great to see how others have done it and where you put them, as there are countless holes in the parcel shelf panel to potentially use. Just trying to get some ideas bounced around, and to help uncover any potential problems I may encounter by  my choice of location. TIA for any help!
    • Brand was ard.   I also threw a brand new battery at it and beefed up the wire from the alternator to battery and added an extra earthing point from the battery
