shonen
Hi guys. Have a question for those of you who have or have had cars with vented bonnets. Not necessarily cf vented bonnets just any bonnet that has holes in it. Sure they look nice when matched correctly to the car and they have better cooling properties. But just wanna know if you have had any issues with water, ie parked when raining or when washing the car. Ive been contemplating buying a cf bonnet and cant decided on whether or not to go vented. Worried that the water may come in contact with the electrical components in the car and in the more EXTREME (yet possible) case, cracking manifolds. ie cold water on hot steel tubes. Dont laugh cause I know one guy who cracked his manifold from excessive water contact, he didnt have a vented bonnet but I forgot to ask him how it came in contact with so much water. so any feedback would be nice guys... Blitz
In most cases the vents are over the very front of the engine and even on those that have smaller vents on the sides at the rear of the bonnet I dont think water would land on your manifolds. Some bonnets however that have much larger vents that are situated right over the coils etc may be a different story espepcially if you have your coil cover removed. In general however I think its fairly safe if you pick the right bonnet for your car Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/77890-vented-bonnets/#findComment-1423136 Share on other sites

cole_trx
i have a JA starion. for all you who dont know, that was the only model (aust delivered) with the crazy 80's bonnet scoops. from factory, the ones on the side are totaly for show (ie no venting at all), and the front, although big like wrx's from the outside, on the inside actually no bigger than 2x postbox slit size. seemed hardly worth the effort. i drilled all the ***cers out...... so IMHO, goto be better than stock. the more airflow the better! R33_Cam
ive had 2 cars now with CF vented bonnets, R33 and now R34, both fine, no probs at all, as someone else said, the vents are usually positioned in places which wont effect anything, both of mine have had the big vent in the middle between the radiator and engine so the water runs staight out and the side vents have been close to strut towers so neither really allow water to touch anything but the car body, only issue that i noticed was that on the od occasion i would get a little bit of fanbelt squeek due to the water, but it only lasted a second or two....... hope that helps Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/77890-vented-bonnets/#findComment-1426960 Share on other sites

MacGuyver
My brother has a TRD 3000 style cf bonnet on his Supra and got rain in his pod filter! (he has a pretty huuuuge Trust one) Car didn't like that too much. But the bonnet came with pannels that you could clip under the vents to block them up for such occasions. "The internet? Is that thing still around?" Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/77890-vented-bonnets/#findComment-1428613 Share on other sites
