i've posted this on another thread: is it just me or do i get better mileage from normal premium as opposed to ultimate?? im 99.9 percent sure i have a stock ecu ... have hi flow air filter ... decent aftermarket exhaust ... i get 300-350 on ultimate and 400-450 on normal premuim ... why is that?? .. and my cars an automatic ... r33 gtst.?? i've even tried normal unleaded ... but i think i would get about 300kms per tank cause i didn't fill up all the way, just seeing what the performance was. anyone got any ideas?? i'll just stick to normal permium now cause it comes out cheaper both ways. i've even tried woolworths premium and it gives me about the same mileage :D but i still think that normal premium (BP that is) gives me a better idle .. but i think i can feel more power with the ultimate.

thanks

Hmm, perhaps look at the most important factor when achieving fuel economy - how you drive the car. It all depends on how quickly you accelerate and deccelerate. Spend alot of time stop/starting (especially in an auto) and you will chew the juice, also time spent on boost tends to make a huge difference.

I only use ultimate, although I have tried premium. The main difference I noticed was a definate increase in responsiveness on ultimate - the fuel economy didn't change a heap - what does effect economy most is when I get friendly with the loud pedal.

I think the main thing you should be trying to do if you are comparing fuels is drive them the same way, in similar conditions, ie road and weather conditions, and it may be a bit hard if you are just comparing with one tank only. Another thing to consider is that imports' ecu is tuned for 100ron fuel, the closer you can get to that the better is should drive.

EDIT: that is if you are driving an import, also try doing an ecu reset each time you change fuel

i drive it harder when i'm using the normal premium ... i try to drive really conservatively when using bp98 cause i don't really wanna waste it ... but for some reason i get shitty economy ... i've tried many tanks of both premium and ultimate and i've resetted the ecus but still get the same results ... i wonder if anyone else has similar results to mine ... a friend with an mx6 turbo says he has similar experience in that he gets same if not better econmy ... i'm starting to think this bp ultimate isn't at all what its cracked up to be ...

Castrol Vortex (96 RON) = 350-380km / 60L

Shell Optimax (98 RON) = 375-415km / 60L

I think its coz im more conscious of how little km's im getting out of the tank so slow down alot on the 2nd half to try and squeeze more km's out of it and get me thru a week atleast.

I've been doing abit more freeway driving lately and while having my A/C on 20c im about to crack 500km (Current record is 414km)which im really happy about because i know i could easily get 550km if i drove it like a normal person rather then giving it a squeeze on every single outing.

Ultimate is approx 8c deerer than ULP, and if you aren't taking this into account you could be out by approx 50 or so km's worth on a full tank

Then the additional could be perhaps because your right foot is enjoying the additional power from the extra RON too much!!!

the max i got from a full tank is about 480 from normal premium ... max from ultimate is about 370 ... and its not because i drive it really hard ... i don't .. i drive nice and slow ... why dont' people beleive me?? anyways i'm up for a service soon so i will see how my feul economy changes after that ...

Yup now and then when i feel im getting good economy and i try and see how many km's i can get from a tank the most i have ever stretched it is about 60L (determined by the amount of fuel before it clicks when i fill up again).

What i'd do to get a digital read out of - fuel consumption, range and L's remaining like my dads Vectra... geeze it'd be good.

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't had my R33 that long (so I guess I'm kinda still driving it hard!) but I get about 320kms out of 50 ltrs around town and my best so far was 450kms on a highway run (just locked on at 120km/h no hard accelarating). This is on Optimax. I have been putting Wynns racing formula occtane boost in every forth tank. Do these fiqures sound like I have a problem or are they pretty ordinary?

My last car a 2001 Astra I got 550kms around town and my best was 800kms on a trip to Melbourne!

pfc got nothing to do with it.

if its tuned right you should get the extra power and better fuel economy than stock.

franks i'm guessing your in sydney or melbourne. most of u guys seem to get shitty fuel economy i really think the fuel has alot to do with it.

If i just drive to work and cruise around my town i'll get 370km from 60L's

If i visit some women 30mins north afew times a week i'll get 400-425km from 60L's.

It just depends on what roads i drive on because i only have 1 style and thats 'go hard or go home'.

:burnout:

More likely has something to do with the fact that the car was idling and wasting fuel more than it would in any other place i reckon

    • I left the ceramic coating off this bit, hopefully it just comes off after a few drives.   The gap between the spokes is too tight for anything on a stick, its only marginally bigger than my finger. I have to use a brush to get in there and its a big reason why I thought I'd try the coating.   Absolutely will do. I have EBC Blue Stuff pads to put on the front which will make them a bit dirtier. I'm hoping a pressure wash will just get most off. The shine is different to most, its very thin but seems very well 'attached' so hopefully it lasts.
    • Barrels don't need to be shiny clean. But they are certainly nicer when they are not polluted with years of brake dust, and worse the rotting corpses of the last 17 balance weight sticky pads scattered all around.
    • Yeah, type a special character like ^ or | to initiate the equivalent of the "at"ing for thread links. Although, it might not get any easier to manage. Imagine 30 or 40 threads that kinda match what you want, and the one you want is lost after a long list of useless ones. The magic keyword version I proposed would be a manual effort to set up each case. More of a directed effort from the greybeards to facilitate exposure of useful content. I'm not against the auto complete stuff being considered - maybe por que no los dos? (And where I said "triggered automatically" in my OP, I meant "triggered accidentally". Of course I want it to be automatic!!)
    • Ah yes, fair enough! I was purely thinking about cleaning the spokes and front of the wheel with the mitt. For the barrel the rag on a stick makes more sense. I've tried cleaning the barrels on mine and gave up in frustration. Between brakes being in the way or spokes being in the way and limited space to constantly move the car front and back it was just too annoying. The barrel being as shiny as the rest of the wheel sounds amazing though. At this point I'm not even sure if they have the same surface finish on mine. But I feel inspired now to find out.
