on the newer RB25s and RB26s they have adopted variable cam timing, this allows the engine to run a bigger cam profile from stock. the ecu controls the timing of the cams by solenoids that advance or retard the cams at different rpms or loads and can open or close the valves earlier or later..with no cam timing, you will have massive amounts of overlap and wasted air and fuel at idle and low rpm...variable can retard the cam to improve response at this rpm....not to be confused with VTEC which hydraulically locks different cam lobes in at different rpm.

the VCAM system is new from HKS which allows control over the cam timing so you can tune the cam timing from inside the cab. similar to the apexi V-AFC for Vtec hondas, except much more advanced....and expensive.

HKS have also gotten into electronically controlled turbos. these bad boys have been around for a little while, and are on the new turbo diesel hiluxs. they have a motor, that controls vanes in the turbine housing at low rpm or load, these vanes are closed, making a smaller turbine housing. as the rpm or loads increase, the motor opens the vanes, making the exhaust housing larger. HKS have adapted this to some of their turbos...incredible stuff.

NZM.031 - yeah a friend of mine mentioned the new vane technoligy HKS were testing basically you can have a big fkc off T51R SPL with the reponse of a 2835, that will be some wiked shit when they finally perfect it and realese it.

Yeah i asummed that the V-CAM unit altered either cam duration or aloud control over the cams.

I'm actually surprised variable volume turbochargers didn't become more common 10 years ago. The basic idea and technology does not seem complex - just the implementation is the tricky part I guess...

What about electrically spooled turbos? where the shaft is spun up by an electric motor at low rpm. Rumours are that the next GT-R, and maybe even before that, the next Mazda RX-8 may have this technology.

Must be possible for HKS and the like to be able to jump the gun a little there too?

We are going to start to release these turbos (variable geometry turbo) at work, they are the bee's knees apparently.. yet to see one in the flesh tho.. expensive too. These will be holset ones i think tho

Sounds like the old two stroke technology of power valves...Small reed valves in the exhaust port are closed at idle, and gradually open up at 6000rpm where the snap kicks in. Then its hold on time :rofl:

Basically idea was to give some useable torque at idle....

There were several cars at Tokyo Autosalon this year running the v-cam setup including the HKS flagship R34 GTR complete with the 2.8L kit and T04Z turbo

And you didn't stick any in your suitcase.... you obviously haven't been well trained :rofl:

What sort of price are these V-cam systems?
