Fuel guage going haywire

OK, heres the story. Was on the way to work, running out of petrol, pulled into caltex, and they were out of vortex and they had no premium pumps. So i put in $10 worth of regular unleaded (i know i know)

Now since then, my petrol guage went up, then went down, down, down, WELL BELOW empty (where its never been before). I suspected it may be dodgy fuel just sending my fuel level guage haywire so i stopped into BP and put $30 worth of ultimate98 in, and it went up for a short time, then when i started driving it went right back down under E.

Anything like this happened to anyone else? It seems to head up towards the normal level when idles, but when i go anywhere, it goes right below empty. Car drives fine, no problems, just the fuel guage is stuffed. Possibly the fuel level thingy in the tank could be stuffed?

My car done this for a while found that the sensor in the fuel tank (big tube to the right of the pump)had fallen off its perch.

yea sounds like a sender problem just a coincidence with puttin in shit fuel. a sign from the skyline god of never to use anything less than ultimate ever again lol

yeh that'll teach me to mess with the fuel gods. So where is this sender, can i fix it myself?

its in your fuel tank if your ok with snooping around in your fuel tank you should be fine.

but what im asking.. is it something i'll just see? i mean, am i going to see a loose wire or broken part, or will i just have to replace the part.

Im expecting your gonna find it floating around in your fuel tank instead of sitting mounted on its braket (it just slips on to its mount!) its a long round cylinder just slip it back on where its supposed to be.

na its in the boot up on the same shelf as the battery only on the r/h side there will be an access panel

I've had the guage go down past the 'E', then float back up to full again, and then back down again.... but it would have been caused by installing a new fuel pump myself and knocking the sensor off. It's always fun to never quite know how much fuel you have!

Serious Note: Even a battery tourch MAY be hazardous. If you need light best to use one that is water proof, just to be a safer.
