Hey Fellas/Girls,

I am going off my nutt here just Quietly.

I had a previous thread on a rb20 turbo upgrade asking what a good turbo replacement would be.

I have decided to go with a 450 twin roller bearing. good for 550 hp.

T4 compressor wheel, bored out, high flowed, rebuilt.

My original concern was with stock: internals, gear box, etc. :uh-huh:

While I do not plan on flogging my precious every time I get in, of course there is going to be the "odd occasion" If you know what I mean.

Reason been, I have to run my car on 16psi to get decent result. Not to boot around every were but to reduce the lag.

I have been assured that with a stock motor on 16 psi I will be ok??

My mechanic advised I get a fuel regulator, due to r32 gts-t injectors been as small as they are. I thought ok why not only $150.

Speaking with som one else, I have been told I will fu_k my motor, mainly the pistons.

I am now really in two minds about what to do. Infact you could say i am completely

I blew my stock turbo with a dumpy about 2 weeks ago, And clutch was starting to slip. I am getting a brass button custom built this week.

Current mods:

hybrid i/c,

exhaust from cat,

electronic boost controller,

as end of this week a brass button clutch,

bigger fuel pump,

a few small other goodies.

Has anyone had personal experience with what I am about to adventure into?

Would you suggest I don't go this turbo, and why?

Have any constructive comments?

I am really starting to stress a bit here!

Any help or comments would much appreciated.

Cheers.

by the sounds of it, if you still have the stock internal motor, the thing wont last long, but it depends on how much power the car will eventually run with the new turbo, and how heavy your right foort will be. yeah stock injectors will probably run out of puff real quick with approx. 200rwkw plus.

cause ive had no experience at all with a 32, dont take my word on it, but whatever kilowatts your wanting to produce will all depend on which turbo would suit.

good luck with it

Hey thanks.

Yeah as I said above, I'm still running stock internals & gear except for my listed mods.

I dont want to be in 'denile' about the possibility of my motor but you speak with differant people and you hear differant things.

Obviously there is a big risk here.

There are two ways to find out:

1) from someone who has done this or at least similiar to or,

2) the expensive way. Other wise known as the hard way.

Am I been silly in taking the risk or is it worth it and relatively safe?

I mean If I had the money I wouldn't be too concerned, trial and error.

Unfortunately I don't! as most of us dont'.

Some might say, "mate there is your answer" but thats not what I am asking.

A couple of years ago I bolted a modified garrett 440hp turbo onto my internally stock RB20 (in R32) and had the factory computer retuned to run 20psi (tuning by Chiptorque). Because the 440hp garrett has a T28 exhaust flange, a turbo specialist grafted the stock RB20 housing (T3) onto the new turbo whilst retaining the garrett exhaust wheel and wastegate.

This was certainly not my original plan but due to time and an error on behalf of a reputable tuning company, this is what I ended up with. To their credit the car is still going strong some 2.5 yrs later (now my fathers car!). My father putts around on 13-14 psi for everyday driving.

In my opinion the key to engine longevity is strongly dependent on the state of engine tuning. The RB20's released in the R32's have some 10yrs+ development behind them and are by nature a strong motor, but incorrectly tuned and you can kill the motor (any motor for that fact).

I had installed some RX7 injectors but Chiptorque couldn't get a good tune so refitted the factory units. The injectors are currently at their safe usable limit. Because I had installed a Bosch 044 fuel pump, running an adjustable fuel pressure regulator would allow further boost (an idea suggested by Chiptorque). I never did take it any further though. The car made 185kw@wheels on Chiptorque's dyno and has the potential for high 12's.

Some food for thought.

Cheers,

Ben

How much is the turbo going to cost you? It may be more financially viable for you to get a high flowed RB25 turbo which a few RB20 owners have used to get close to 200rwkw.

If I were you I'd get a 3" dump / front pipe. A good tune will help a lot as well. Stock injectors aren't that bad.

Hey Cerealkiller,

I'm getting the turbo for $850. Set the bloke back allegedly $2500 who im buying it off, comes with reciepts.

I have seriously been considering the rb25 turbo. I have my car at the mechanics now, just got it towed this morning.

Im getting the clutch done now wich should be 5 days or so. I have told him I will take this turbo, so If I decide not to, I'd better do it very quickly!

should have spent the $150 on some GTR injectors rather than wasting $150 on the fuel reg at the early stage. I'd rather spend the $300 on the GTR injectors, and will :(

I got a 2nd hand highflowed RB25 turbo for $600.. you have to ask yourself what the response will be in the "T4" style unit you have, I'm thinking not too good, a lot of top end rather than mid.. but only one way to find that out.

Predator,

I haven't yet bought the fuel reg. Gtr injectors I think are definately the way to go.

I am a bit worried about the gcg 450 for the exact reason of low end power, hence why i am going to run it on 16psi. Then there is the consequence of doing so. A 25det turbo is sounding more and more inviting as the day passes on.

My car is not heavily modded or highly tuned so the 450 might not be too suitable for me?

Like you say only one way to truly know..

Hi 32brother,

550 HP turbo on an Rb20 sounds like boost will be cutting in at too high revs which means your revs will always be in red line to get some performance out of it.

I was running the RB25 turbo on my R32 for the last year or so and had it low boost at about 9psi and high boost between 15-17psi with no problems and just took the turbo off the other day and its still perfect.

I am running a GTR fuel pump and mimes/PFC ecu. (mimes first 12 months/ PFC now)

I wouldnt go such a large turbo unless your considering making some further changes to your engine and driving.

my r32 currently has these mods.

High Flowed 450hp Standard Turbo

HKS Intercooler

Bosch 040

Blitz SUS Pod with sheild

Apexi N1 3.5inch system with custom 3.5inch dump+front pipe

Greddy Catch Can

14psi

AND HAS THE STANDARD ECU!!

i got it put on the dyno and it did not miss a beat...the guy said the air/fuel mix was safe to drive it around with the occasional thrash..but he said with sumthing like a power fc he could probablly get around another 40 -50hp out of it just the way it is now.

That isnt true, its shame you were not at DECA on Saturday:) 18psi, 234rwkws and 8,400rpm rev limit...and trust me when i say i spent a lot of time boucing off the limiter spinning around cones on the skidpan....the car did a track day at Sandown with i think it was 8,200rpm 18psi and 234rwkws and the thing doesnt have a drop of blow by...and these are just the last two events from the last 3 weeks.

If the thing is tuned well, your not silly with revs (ie 8,400rpm is silly revs...i was trying to demonstrate more flair then the GTR boys:)), and you let the thing warm up, cool down, and dont go cooking the water and oil temps etc then they handle pretty good power, some would call it abuse.

If you run the std rev limiter, and 16psi, id say odds are the thing will be fine for years of fun, start winding 18psi and over the std rev limit and sure you increase your chance of something going astray.

My rb20 has been running around for over 3 years with daily driving seing over 18psi shoved into it at up to 8500rpm regulary. It has also done alot of track days and drift.

With replacement engine installed for around 1k who cares how long it lasts.

LOL.:werd: ... his car likes going sideways:)

id have to agree to a degree (lol)

although this might be a once or twice off time

anyway a friend of mine had a r32 which was preety well thrashed and had a new engine waiting with all new goodies

as this was sitting on the floor he decided to experiment on how long a standard rb20 will last with as much punishiment it could take i mean this engine was running a huge truck turbo on 25psi everyday all day for nearly 2 yrs untill he got the new engine then came the real test

no line on the wastegate unlimited boost this thing lasted 3 weeks before it died and all that happened was a broken ring in 6 and i think it spun a bearing

this engine copped a hiding

and from other friends that have rb20 in r32s running over 20psi everyday never a prob

but like i said could be just a coincidence

cheers

matt

60,000+kms at 200rwkw on mine, 159,000kms total, its still going good!

run 1.3bar daily on mine, I get lazy and don't turn it down while driving to work, its too much fun!

Keep good oil in them and a decent tune and they are great
