Both thoughts I have had. Seeing as how my DR is in a million pieces I think I will have to get a tape measure out and do a whole heap of measuring.

I just spoke to one of the guys at Nissco and he has heard that the R31 crossmembers fit with some modification. If you don't want to go that way maybe talk to these guys.http://www.maddat.com.au/

They do full front end rebuilds for 1600's (similar to R30 I've heard) which apparently work very well. Maybe they could provide and answer.

As for S13 rear end is it just a matter of time and lots of $$$?

Cheers

There is a chance that the S13/14/15/ R32 front cross member/rack/lower control arms may work . I would be measuring the lower control arm length to see if their similar length to R30 . It seems that other Nissans of the 80's with racks used shorter control arms and their inner pivots further appart than the R30 with its conventional steering . Its probably a case of having a rack long enough to allow suitable travel that forces the inner pivots to be further out necessitating shorter arms . The conventional system can work IF the pitman and idler arms work (pivot) only in the intended arc .

It would be a large undertaking to put S13 rear suspension into an R30 . The body would have to be strengthened in the mounting point areas for the cradle and it would be sheer good luck if the dampers lined up properly . The track width needs to be right and who knows what happens with roll centres , hight etc .

Nothing is impossible but the S13/R32 is probably cheaper to buy standard and have (the R32) more potential .

i know a bloke how put the s-13 rear end into a 1200 ute, i can put the question to him see what he says?

Be very interested is what he has to say.

Also found the following on rack and pinion into 1600.

the 280zx was rack and pinion I think. Would this maybe fit?

Blue bird crossmember bolts straight into an R30 they have rack and pinion however it is manual not power steer and they have the same strut to strut distance. I am currently searching for a power steer rack that can be used needs to be the perfect length, then just need to figure out a steering coupling.

I have heard of r31 and s14 racks being used in blueys with slight mods to fit so I am going to go give these a measure to see how these will go.

Yes keep us posted as I have the 910SSS X member and power rack which my FJT Bluebird used . You need to get a matching set as Bluebirds have different rack mounts for manual and power racks . I'm not certain but I think the 280ZX used a very similar power rack . S12 Gazels are also from the same era so check them out as well .

With Bluebird bits you may need to cut and shut the control arms so that the roll bar and radius rod links bolt up .

yes I have already looked into this. S13 control arms are exactly the same as bluebird in every way but the radius rod mounts with 2 straight holes rather than off at an angle like bluey. So running s13 control arms on the bluey crossmember will allow the use of the standard radius rods. I have also lined up a standard r30 swaybar next to a standard bluey swaybar and they seem to be exactly the same shape so mounting swaybar should be no problem.

And mounting a FJ on a bluey cross member is easy as too. As you would no doubt know.

I love Nissan interchangabilty :jump:

Actually the power rack (Bluebird) is much more robust than the locally made manual piece of crap . I would go so far as to say with non std wheel off sets and lots of positive caster the steering gets real heavy .

Just had a thought if you use Bluebird power assist bits you may need to shorten the steering arms to retain enough steering arc , My Bbd had std arms and the full lock was a bit average . The tubular section of the power rack is longer than the std one so it runs out of travel a little sooner . I may take it to Just Jap and compare it to S13/14/15/R32GTST racks .

Yes FJ20ET's go onto Bluebird X members , The Jap SSS 910 X member and Gazell FJT brackets virtually bolt together , got a pair of those too .

With the s13 setup you will be running an extra 40mm track over all I measured it all up.

My setup I pretty much have up and running just need to sort out steering linkages. But I'm running modded bluey crossmember (chopped bluey mounts off welded DR30 mounts on), bluey rack with s13 tie rods on the ends, s13 control arms, s13 adjustable castor rods with a few mods to mounting possie's.

I have driven my mates bluey with this exact setup running similar camber & castor settings to what I will be running and over all it aint too heavy non power steer, I have driven worse. And the steering lock is unbelivable. But if worse comes to worse I have a z31 power steer rack which is almost identical to bluey.

Which model Bluey, local?, what year? What mods are needed to fit in DR, is it just engine mounts?

The car is about to go to the workshop and I really want to get this all worked out so the whole job is as hassel free as possible.

I don't know where you found that pic,but it is definatly not of an R31 crossmember.

EDIT:added pic

Yeah Cheers Man, I thought that picture looked a little strange seeing that people said R30 & R31 had similar crossmembers.

I got the picture from the Jap ebay pages that RSX84 put up (Cheers for that).

It was just the first pic I could find that said R31 and looked like to crossmember.

Cheers for the proper pic.

OHR-30T, as you have owned both (haven't you?), how similar are R31 and R30 crossmembers?

Yes I have :) 1 FJ20ET powerd R31 Pintara, 1 RB20DET Pintara, 1 RB30E R31 Skyline, 1 L24ET HR30 Skyline, and current HR31 Skyline :)

After that poor effort at showing off,I have to be honest and say I can't really remember the HR30's crosmember. Undoubtably it would swoop forward somewhat, compared to the pic of the DR30 xmember you posted there,so as to accomidate the longer 6cyl engine. Aussie MR30 should be the same-try and have a squize in one of them. Best thing to do is visit your local wreckers with tape measure in hand, and see what you can find. ;)

Sorry to dig this tread out again, but I found the following

http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=116117

So how similar are the rear suspension mounting points on 280zx and the DR30?

Both are semi trailing arm and look very similar.

DR30 with S13 front suspension & R32/S13 rear suspension :)

Cheers
