I was wondering if any of you guys out there have tried some Maxxis tyres, Victra Ma-Z1 235/45/17 to be more precise (Finished 3rd overall in wheels magazine test last month). if so tell us about your experiences with them.

I am seriously thinking in buying some at 180 dollars a corner :P

are you sure they are the MA-Z1. i may have been mislead but bob jane also told me that the MA-Z1 doesn't come in a bigger size than 235/45/17. the make bigger tyres but not in that type.

Yes they tried to mislead me too, I was asking for the Hankook K104 at first over the phone, and the guy said he had this special on the Maxxis tyres that finished 3rd on the test, and blah blah blah, for only $145. :confused:

It seemed to good to be true so went and found the magazine and checked the reference and wrote it down in a paper, and headed down to bob jane, got there and the guy kept going on about the tyres that finished 3rd on the test and blah, blah, but it ended up being the MA-V1 he was trying to sell me :chairshot ,

Finally he said, sorry for the misunderstanding (yeah right) if you want me I can still get you the MA-Z1 if you want, so that's how it all happened.

I couldn't tell you about other sizes cause I didnt ask,

Its all about who is asking them to make the stuff, and their quality control. Seriously, the Chinese will make stuff the same as everywhere else if asked to. Some companys send over their own QC staff to keep an eye on things.

From what perspective Mik? If it's qual control not really, as previously stated they will pretty much make anything well under supervision. What bothers me is paying twice as much for a brand name tyre that doesn't perform as well or performs equally.

My only question is how they hold up over time. Should be no difference as they wear but I've heard of cheaper compounds turning to wood over time. Still, at half the price of other stuff who cares, people are raving over the K104 and I've had Yokos go wooden too.

From a quality control perspecitve. Most of the stuff that comes out of China has pretty poor quality control. For most goods, if they fail, you just throw them out an get another one...but when it comes to tyres and brakes, it's your life you are playing with.

Interesting debate here on quality control, but wouldn't you think that if an american company is trying to get in the Australian market (and many other markets for that matter) , they would be very picky on quality control as supposed to a company that already has its name and reputation and no matter how crap their products are, people would still buy from them.?

Well it looks like im gonna be the first one to have this tyres on a line, they are going on tomorrow, I hope I wont be writing bad reviews on them in a few months. :)

Gday Mik,

I half agree with you about the quality. The cheap stuff is crap, I can't remember which stuff, but I was told that some of the jap parts we buy are actually made in China/Taiwan and the Jap name is slapped onto it.

Like with everything, there is expensive stuff and cheap stuff. An example would be tyres. Falken make some decent tyres (451), and they also make some absolute rubbish (ziex).

Yes...but no matter how bad the 326 is, you can be reasonably sure it won't fall apart. The 326 is Falken's budget tyre. It is still made in Japan and will still be made under decent quality control.

The Chinese stuff might perform better, but I still wouldn't use them just in case I got a bad one.

If you are buying tyres on price why not buy retreads then ?

Have you had a cheap Chinese rim break on you ? It's not much fun let me tell you .

It's simple - because I don't need to buy retreads. If price were the only consideration then retreads it would be.

Re the Falken not coming apart, I had one that was out of round from new. I've had Michelins blow out twice on gravel, supposedly because they had soft sidewalls. And have no doubt that at some stage our tyres are likely to be made in China.

Who knows what the long term results will be on the Maxxis but remember how a US company called Ford put Firestone tyres on their vehicles and several fatalities later admitted that they were a problem? Anyone can get it wrong.

Remember Hankook. Han farking who? Wouldn't touch them...even a crap sounding name...but look at the people raving abut them on these forums.

Like or hate the way tyre tests are done, here's a Maxxis tyre that is half the price of others and actually appears to out perform many of them. That's got to be worth considering.

You can't compare Korean manufacturing and quality control with that of China! Korean Manfacturing is up there with the best in the world now. Much better than most of the Europeans.

Someone said that the Maxxis were $280 for the 265 x 35 x 18, you can get Japanese tyres for less than that.

    • My hold point for future mods is that I want a OEM detachable hard top first, but, finding one is a pain, MX5 Mania are looking for one for me, but, as hens teeth are more common, finding one in Australia is proving problematic  I can get a OEM one from overseas, hell, you can still get new ones in 'Merica, but, shipping is a absolute killer and I cannot justify the cost, or the risk of it being damaged during transport As for the aftermarket hardtops, whilst they do the job of being a hard top, and are fine for a track car, they don't seal well (read: leak like a sieve in the rain), and you need a plastic/poly rear window, plus they are a bolt in option only and not made to be easily removed I liked how the hard top on my NB could be fitted, and removed, by myself, in less than 5 minutes I know it sounds bad, but I'm waiting for someone to write off a car with one so I can swoop in on their pain, it will go to a good home though, so my guilt of this is tempered

    • No, you don't want to plug the vacuum line, as that will turn that side of the booster into an air spring and probably make it feel worse. I'm not saying that the GTR master itself doesn't need a booster. I haven't paid attention to the GTR one to know what size it is cf the non-GTR ones. But when you think about it - they have to do the same job, which is to move a little slave piston a few mm to do what it is supposed to do, and that final action is the same on all the cars. So, it is very unlikely that the GTR MC is any different than the others, because it has the same pedal stroke and the same output requirement. The booster just makes it feel easier. I'd suggest you probably have an actual hydraulic problem. It's totally common on these old shitboxes.
