After a discussion with discopotato03 about getting a bit more out of a GCG Hiflow turbo, i rang Bret at GCG Turbochargers and he concurred that he could adapt a VG30 rear end onto his GCG Hiflowed R33 GTS-t turbo. I then sourced a VG30 from an importer and gave it and my Hiflow back to Bret to do the Hybrid. Bret suggested that it should give a little more with the larger rear end and hold boost to 7000.

After refitting the Hybrid GCG Hiflow, I had a very pleasant supprise after it was retuned yesterday by C&V Performance. I had a tune done by C&V four weeks ago which produced 240kw@tw just prior to competing in round 4 of the NSW Supersprint Ch'ps at Easter Creek where I had a fastest time of !:49:55. Yesterday the GCG Hybrid made a safe 271.2kw@tw.

Should be able to use the extra kw at Oran Park in round 5 this Sunday.

Well done Ian, that's a great result, it's the extra ~50 rwkw at ~4,500 rpm that impresses me. :)

Hi Gary, thanks mate. Con was very impressed with the larger VG30 rear end and recon's he can get more (he wanted to weld up the gate and get a manifold with external)but with stock innards we called a halt, cause i know that you recon around 280kw is satisfactory.

Very good. Have you got a pic of the turbo before you put it on. I'm interested to see the physical size of the exhaust housing.

This fits with my theory that an R34 turbo highflowed should make more than an R33 one done the same way. Compressor sides are the same all round but bigger exhaust housing picks up serious gains.

very impressive results mate. What other mods do you have? are you using the stock cams?

:)

Hi Munna, have GCG Hiflow Hybrid Turbo, Power FC, Nismo 550 Injectors, GTR34 Front Mount Int, GTR34 Fuel Pump, Sard FPR, Z32 AFM, HKS Step 1 Cams, HKS adjustable exhaust Cam Gear, CES Split Dump, 3" exhaust. Oil Cooler. Suspension and Brakes have been modified extensively including GTRGeoff's Hycas lock bar. Racing on RE55s Bridgestone tyres.

Hi Bob. yes i took a heap of pictures of the turbo before i put it on. I have them on the memory card on my camera but i will download them onto the computer tonight and post for you Bob. The VG30 is much larger than the turbine housing on the GTS-t. I know nothing about turbos but the guys that do are like gynocologists and stick 3 fingers into the housing and say, "yes this is off a single turbo 3 litre 300ZX Nissan"

Ian

Will be good to see.

That boost drop would explain the flat top end.  Any idea why it's dropping off like that?

Hi Bob, I have no idea why it drops off, from the impression i got off Con he doesn't like internally gated turbos particularily. Maybe that was why he said he would like to weld the gate and get a externally gated manifold? But at the end of the day I was really stoked with the extra 30kw from the turbo and getting close to the limits of a stock internal RB25. I was so close to buying a HKS 2835 kit for $4000 and i doubt if it would have made any more than the VG30 addition on the GCG Hiflow for the few hundred it cost.

Congrats Bullant on a good result for the cash outlay . Can you tell us if the spool revs moved up with the larger ARR housing .

I'll stand with Corky Bell when he says turbine inlet pressure is an evil and should be delt with accordingly .

My rantings only , cheers A .

Hi A, thanks for that bit of info you gave me originally. When i mentioned it to Brett, he knew exactly what i was talking about and had done them sucessfully before. He told me to get a turbine housing off a 300 ZX Nissan single turbo. LuckiyI eventually got one from SSS at Girraween for $150. My Hiflow was off the car as i had just broken a manifold stud so I gave Brett my Hiflow and the VG30 turbine housing and a few days later the Hybrid was ready. I'm not sure of what the cost was as I bought a few other things at the same time, silicon tubing and clamps and stuff but I don't think it was over $200 for machining and rebuild. If anyone is interested ring Brett at GCG (sponsors of Skyline Australia).

Driving home yesterday in torrential rain, spoolup appears to be very similar to the normal GCG Hiflow, which is what i want for circuit racing, no lag and response is immediate I'll know exactly whenI race it on Sunday at Oran Park and im going to love the extra 30kw.

Ian

hi bullant 47

can you let me know how much all up the hi flow cost you?  and also are you using the standard manifold??  would be keen to get a similar setup as my current setup has cams and adj cam gears etc the same as yours

thanks....brett

Hi bretto, I got the VG30 from SSS Automotive for $150 ( some places wanted $500 for the VG30 and JustJap didn't have any) and your only going to use the turbine housing so one with shonky bearing or whatever is OK. I'm not 100% positive but I think GCG charge between $150-$200 to machine and rebuild your existing Hiflow, but please check with Brett at GCG Turbo's. They are sponsors of Skylines Australia. Make sure you get the VG30 of a 300 ZX single turbo. It took SSS two attempts to give me the correct housing.

Ian

There are a few different VG30DET's.

The conventional sleve bearing and the roller bearing.

Is it possible the turbine housings are exactly the same 5 bolt pattern?

Pics would be great, I went to check out a VG30 turbo down at D1, the exhaust housings looked only ever so slightly bigger than the rb20 item they had sitting next to it.

I had a VG30 I bought from JMS some time ago, I went through 2 of them before giving up and getting my money back, the first one squeeled constantly, even on idle. The second had a squeel for a fraction of a second at around 9psi when coming on to boost.

oh yer.. lol That VG30 looked actually quite a bit larger than the rb20 item.
