It's proximity RF based device like a proxy swipe card.

It requires no power source in the key itself instead the power source comes from the RF signal in the ignition barrel. So if the car's battery is flat it will stop working, if the component in the ignition barrel somehow malfunctions it might also fail to start.

I guess since the car was not sold here your only replacement key options are Nissan Japan and might be tricky. My car came with 2 keys both with the chip in them. Nissan Australia will probably be able to help somehow.

Also your nearest workshop with CONSULT might be able to help somehow...

I have always feared losing my keys for this reason - I wonder if replacing the ECU disables this security feature?

Nope...changing the ECU has no effect on the immobiliser. Power FCs also have the built in immobiliser too.
