Hi Gary,

Im trying to setup a nice highway cruising suspension setup from the myriad of parts i have collected.

This is a pic of some R34 GTR shocks with some unknown brand of spring that were on my 2nd set of bilsteins.

The front and rear springs measure the same ID/OD as the stock R34 springs, and are 13mm in diameter.

The fronts have 8.5 turns with 4 wound closely, 96mm ID

The rears have 7.5 turns with 3 would closely, 102mm ID

I hoping this will make a fair match. I'd rather not have to pay to have my 2nd set of bilsteins re-valved.

Cheers,

Ian

Ammendment to above... because i cant edit it!

The fronts have 8.5 turns with 4 wound closely

Coil ID = 96/70 mm

Wire OD = 13 mm

# of Coils = 8.5 turns

The rears have 7.5 turns with 3 wound closely

Coil ID = 102/91 mm

Wire OD = 13 mm

# of Coils = 7.5 turns

Going through all the results i saw a request to know what standard R34 gtr spring rate measurements are. These measurements are from standard non vspec non NUR 2002 R34 GTR springs.

Front:

Coil ID = 97 mm top

Coil ID = 66.5mm Bottom

Wire D = 13 mm

# of Coils = 5 1/8 turns

Rear:

Coil ID = 102.5 mm top

Coil ID = 88.4 MM Bottom

Wire D = 13 mm

# of Coils = 4 1/8 turns

hey Sk, can you calculate my spring rate :P

front

Coil ID: 91mmTOP

91mm BOTTOM

Wire ID: 14mm

# of coils: 11.125

rear

Coil ID: 91mmTOP

91mm BOTTOM

Wire ID: 12mm

# of coils: 11.125

there were measured with a tape measure with the springs still on the shock.

Coil OD = 125/100 mm

Wire OD = 14 mm

# of Coils = 7.5 turns

270 lbs/inch (4.8kg/mm)

Coil OD = 110/90 mm

Wire OD = 13 mm

# of Coils = 7.125 turns

300 lbs/inch (5.4kg/mm)

Coil OD = 125 mm

Wire OD = 15 mm

# of Coils = 9 turns

295 lbs/inch (5.3kg/mm)

Coil ID = 65 mm

Wire OD = 13 mm

# of Coils = 6.75 turns

690 lbs/inch (12.3kg/mm)

NB. 3 ODs and 1 ID

Can i please get them in KGmm and Lb"

Thanks Heaps

Sorry for the delay James, I have been tooo busy to forum.

Hi Gary,

The front and rear springs measure the same ID/OD as the stock R34 springs, and are 13mm in diameter.

The fronts have 8.5 turns with 4 wound closely, 96mm ID

185 lbs/inch (3.3kg/mm)

480 lbs/inch (8.5kg/mm)

No true progression there, the progressive coils are too close together, so they would be at the 480 rate all the time when driving.

The rears have 7.5 turns with 3 would closely, 102mm ID

185 lbs/inch (3.3kg/mm)

410 lbs/inch (7.3kg/mm)

No true progression there either, the progressive coils are too close together, so they would be at the 410 rate all the time when driving.

I hoping this will make a fair match. I'd rather not have to pay to have my 2nd set of bilsteins re-valved.

Cheers,

Ian

Typical Japanese R34GTR spring rates, too high in general plus they try and fix the understeer with out of proportion (to the weight) rear spring rates. A decent sized rear swaybar is much better fix for the understeer and it doesn't compromise the ride or traction anywhere near as much.

The sphositicated Bilstein valving (depending on part numbers) will typically handle a much softer spring rate without any problem.

hey Sk, can you please calculate my spring rate

front

Coil ID: 69mm top & bottom

Wire ID: 12.5mm

# of coils: 9.0 evenly spaced

rear

Coil ID: 71mm top & bottom

Wire ID: 11.5mm

# of coils: 9.125 evenly spaced

Thanks heaps

Hi SK

Can you help calculate my spring rates please. HKS coilovers for S13. Hypermax D. I'm guessing pretty stiff :bunny:

Not sure what to measure when it comes to the Coil OD's as I have progressive springs. So attached pic for your assistance.

Fronts:

Coil OD lowest coil 82mm/very top coil 82mm. Widest part of OD is the middle of the top 5 coils and that measures 95mm. 5 coils at top close sprung.

Wire OD = 11mm

# of coils = 10.5

Spring Rate =

Rears:

Coil OD lowest coil 87mm/very top coil 87mm. Widest part of OD is the middle of the top 5 coils and that measures 95mm. 5 coils at top close sprung

Wire OD = 11mm

# of coils = 10.125

Spring Rate =

Thanks :)

Sam

Hi SK could you please calculate some spring rates for me.

FRONT:

Coil ID = 99 top / 68 bottom (mm)

Wire OD = 12.7 mm

# of Coils = 7.5 turns

REAR:

Coil ID = 88.5 top / 77.5 bottom (mm)

Wire OD = 12 mm

# of Coils = 11 turns

thanks, Tim.
