Hey, Can u please calculate my spring rates?

Figures as follows..

FRONT

155mm inner diameter

14mm wire diameter

3.8-3.9 coils

REAR

125 outer diameter

10.75 coils

13mm wire diameter

5 Sacraficial coils

Front = ~240 lbs/inch (4.3 kg/mm)

Rear = ~130 lbs/inch (2.3 kg/mm) on the soft rate and ~295 lbs/inch (5.3 kg/mm) on the high rate

67mm ID at the small end, 14mm dia coil

9.25 turns

Rears are

102mm ID at the large end, 11mm dia coil

88mm ID at the small end, 13mm dia coil

Coil ID = 97/70 mm

Wire OD = 12.7 mm

# of Coils = 8.5 turns

Rears

Coil ID = 103/91 mm

Wire OD = 12.7 mm

# of Coils = 7.5 turns

Bilsteins coils.

Can you give me the rate in KG too please.

The front soft rate is around 185 lbs/inch (3.3 kg/mm) (they would never run at that rate, the top 4.5 coils would sit on each other and it would be at the high rate all the time)

The front high rate is 650 lbs/inch (12 kg/mm)

The rear soft rate is around 115 lbs/inch (2.0 kg/mm) (they would never run at that rate, the top 4.5 coils would sit on each other and it would be at the high rate all the time)

The rear high rate is 350 lbs/inch (6.3 kg/mm)

Well that's a bit higher than I was expecting for the fronts! :thumbsup:

Got them in the car on the weekend with new KYB shocks, and it handles beautifuly. I would expect it to be harsh with this rate but its fantastic.. not sure why but feels really good.

It is always a bit difficult to rate tapered wire coils, to be perfectly accurate you have to know the amount of taper over the full length of wire. Or test them on a spring rate tester. That's not very easy to DIY. The rates that are calculated are the lowest posssible (assuming maximum taper) and the highest possible (assuming the minimum taper).

Rear:

Wire OD = 11 mm

# of Coils = 8 turns

Coil length = 200mm

I am not sure if this in your area of expertise but I am looking at grabbing a set of King Springs

The part number is KPS-101-X5K

As you probably know they go up by 25lb from 200lbs to about 1000lbs

Anyway. I want to run these in the front of a datto 1600 on r31 struts. The car will weigh approx 1000-1100kg with me in it.

What is a good spring rate for this car used on the street with KYB uprated shocks giving a firm yet comfortable ride? I think hub height to guard is about 330mm if that helps at all.

I have been told 200lbs is a good rate.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi James, do you want a comment on Kings springs? If so, they are OK, nothing special. Or a recommended rate? If it's a recommended rate then I need to know a few things;

1. What tyres, normal road tyres, R type tyres or full slicks?

2. What stabiliser bar rates?

3. What do you mean by " KYB uprated shocks", are they 1600 shock "uprated"? Or are you considering them "uprated" because they are for a R31?

4. What alignment settings are you intending to run at 330 mm? ie; have you done anything about the camber change when you lower it, or the bump steer? Because if you haven't then you will need ot make the springs excessively harsh to avoid those problems.

Easy question, not so simple to answer correctly.

Thanks for the calculations!

I've decided to go with your recommended street spring rates and ordered a set of King Spring coils 4kg/3.5kg to replace my current Zeal springs which I believe are 6kg/5kg according to their catalogue.

Going to install them today.

Hoping the ride is much more streetable afterwards.

does the spring rate have to suit the car for eg, i have a r33 gtst what is the rate on stock springs? what would i be looking to get if i were to get coilovers? would it be the same spring rate as stock? and does springrate stiffen/soften ur ride,

    • Hi guys my 94 r33 gtst fuel pump has gone out. I have a walbro 525 ready to go in but am unsure if I need to upgrade the fuel tank bulk heads? Ive heard that others have issues with the stock wiring melting...     • It’s new. It’s the cd009. I did take the transmission apart to mill down the bellhousing and had both housings come off the gears so wondering is something isn’t in right. I am running redline. I can get it in gear running too but it’s just not easier and it’s almost like 2, 4, 6, and reverse all the back gears aren’t happy going in
    • I’ll remember that as a last choice. It’s brand new
    • Got keys and did a walk around the yard planning the landscaping works with the family that I will be doing Main effort: remove all the woodchip in the gardens that are around (attached) to the outside of the house and replace with 10mm blue metal, having woodchip close to the house is a recipe for inviting white ants, currently there are no white ants within the block and I would like to keep it that way I'll be buying some large raised garden beds to grow veggies and stuff, and the woodchip will be mulched with everything else that gets dug up, pulled out, or cut down during works Next will some minor drainage and landscaping maintenance up one side of the house, where the fuse box, AC, and solar stuff will go, about 12 mtrs long by 2 meters wide, I'll break up the soil, add gypsum and then I'll dig in a French drains about 300mm deep x 300mm wide and fill it with agg pipe and blue metal, then level out the whole area with a 50mm layer of blue metal, the soil, whilst currently pretty compacted, will break up well with the gypsum to aid in drainage, I'll then cover the area with a 50mm layer of more blue metal In saying this, the drainage issue is minor, but that little hidden away area down the side is untidy and weedy, and as all of the main elec stuff is there I want it neat and tidy to appease my OCD Again, the material excavated from the French drains with be added to the garden bed mulch, as will some rose bushes and some other crap looking garden plants, and a old apricot tree that is looking worse for wear The apricot tree is currently in a little roundish garden bed that is in the middle of the back yard with few other crappy looking plants around it, that will all be removed, levelled, re-turfed, and is a perfect spot for a hills hoist There is also a area about 3m x 2m between the rear fence and shed that will get some attention, it looks like some stuff was stored there and the grass is dead, that will also get broken up and mulched, and is a prime spot for a pumpkin patch I've guestimated that I'll need: 3 tonnes of blue metal, 12 meters of agg pipe, 5kg of Gypsum, and a hills hoist, so a few bags of concrete as well to set it in place (the house currently has one of those pull out 4 line jobs, whilst it works, I want a retro old school hills hoist), I am also going to run some chickens, there's a great spot for a coop, so a chicken coop to suit 4 of those lovely egg laying bitches will also be on the job card That should keep me busy for a while, and will finish off the back yard ready for a early spring planting of some veggies and berries  Once the main effort is done I'll start out the front, there's a large rock garden that could use some TLC, but that is only minor works Should be fully moved in within 2 weeks, the landscaping works will start then Fun times, retirement is good  
    • It happens, that's what your single stage filler is used for.  If it is still visible after the 3 coats of 2k primer, it will be visible after the paint is laid down.  Its hard to give 100% perfect advice without being there in person, I'm very tempted to say stop where you are, fill your pin holes with a single stage putty first then keep going.
