Sorry for the brief answers, this thread is for guys to measure their springs and for me to calculate the rates, please post any follow up questions in the general suspension thread and I will answer them or PM me if you want.

does the spring rate have to suit the car for eg, i have a r33 gtst

Yes

what is the rate on stock springs?

~165 lbs/inch (3 kg/mm)

what would i be looking to get if i were to get coilovers?

Depends on;

1. what you use the car for

2. what tyres (normal road tyres, R type track tyres or full slicks)

3. what antiroll rates (stabiliser bars)

4. what dampers rates (in the shocks)

5. the suspesnion geometry (anti dive and anti squat)

would it be the same spring rate as stock?

Not normally.

does springrate stiffen/soften ur ride,

Higher spring rate generally (not always) results in a firmer ride.

 cheers :)

HiSk,

Can you help me measure up the spring rates for the Tein HA coilovers please? I only had them measured the Springs which are round and not the flat bits at the bottom end of the spring.

Front.

Coil OD :116mm/97mm

Wire OD :14mm

# of coils : 6.5.

Rears.

Coil OD :95mm/95mm.

Wire OD : 14mm

# of Coils : 8.125

Thanks Buddy.

I had a look through the threadbut couldn't see any standard spring rates?

I'm after the standard front and rear spring rates in Kg's for an R32 GTS-T. If it has been posted but I missed it, please don't burn me!

Got bored one day when I wanted to work out my spring rates for the ohlins coilovers I had a tried to guess the spring constant rate Sydney Kid's program was using using some basic mathematics.

Unfortunately I could never get it quite right :P, but if anyone has an idea of how to fix my little excel spreadsheet calculator please PM me :)

Attachment fixed, excel files are not allowed :(

Hey mate. Could you please tell me the rates of my rear DAB Gymkhana's on my S13?

Coil ID = 74/74 mm

Wire OD = 10 mm

# of Coils = 7.25 turns

Spring rate = 175 lbs/inch (3.1 kg/mm)

Thank you.

Hey Sydneykid,

Do you happen to know what stock R34 GTR (or R33 GTR) spring rates are? I've been told R33 GTR and R34 GTR standard springs are the same.

Just curious so I can compare the rates to my ohlins  (in an R33 GTR)

Ahh found this post that you had posted earlier in the thread:

Sorry, not an easy question to answer, there seems to be a few different standard spring rates in R34GTR's. I have seen three different rates, standard R34GTR, V Spec and N1 (maybe NUR spec), there may be others. The lightest was 165 lbs (3kg/m) per inch and the heaviest was 205 lbs per inch (3.7 kg/mm).

And on this one:

Keep in mind that GTR's handle best around 355 mm front and 345 mm rear (centre of wheel to guard).

My car currently has a bodykit so its waaay above 355/345 to be legal. Also, I thought the rear-end would be higher?

Is that wrong?

I think my car is 370mm/375mm, to keep just over 12cm off the ground on the front bar (may be a little less), I just want to stay about the 10cm legal height in Vic ;). It may also have aftermarket front guards, I'm not sure (they feel like there made of fiberglass).

The car looks like its sitting evenly (as in start and the end of the sideskirts) and seems to handle pretty well but I've only done one advanced driving course, not enough hard driving to know for sure.

Regards,

Gareth

Hi Gareth, the rear guards are cut 15mm lower, so my recommended centre of wheel to guard measurement (355 mm front and 345 mm rear) actually gives a rake of ~10mm nose down. Rake is best measured at the sills, just behind the front wheels and just in front of the rear wheels. Most body kits have the cut outs there for the jacking points.

Cheers

Hi Gary,

just had my Cusco coilovers taken out:

coil ID 70mm

wire OD 13mm

# coils 8 on the long one ( is this front or rear? - obviously I'd know this if I took them out myself)

# coils 7 on the short one

cheers,

Mike

Hi Gary,

just had my Cusco coilovers taken out:

coil ID 70mm

wire OD 13mm

# coils 8 on the long one - rear 450 lbs/inch (8kg/mm)

# coils 7 on the short one - front 550 lbs/inch (10 kg/mm)

cheers,

Mike

Wouldnt the spring hardness and material effect the rate ?

How can you tell rates without knowing that ?

Or does it assume everything is a "standard"

Ignore that bit you have already answered it several times .....

Hey "I was elected to lead , not to read"

My Ohlins just happen to be on the garage floor

Front

13.8mm wire

7.5 Coils

92.5mm od

Rear

13.2mm wire

9.25 Coils

92.5mm od

In my opinion , they are hard ...

:P

    • Convert to dual filament bulb   FWIW, it will look odd - I dare say a bit dumb as it looks like your flasher relay has shit the bed.
    • If the RB20 box in the car is a push clutch, then yes, you will need to deal with the pull clutch on the turbo box. You either buy a pull clutch and don't use the old one, or you do the things needed to convert the turbo box's clutch arrangement over to push. Which is a bit of a f**karound. "Making" a custom tailshaft is the easy part. But you will need to source the front clip yoke - the bit that goes into the output of the gearbox. These are not as easy to find. They are out there, but they don't grow on trees the way that they used to.
    • Indicator bulbs are way too bright to use as a "corner marker" (we call them parking lights too). Sure. Go ahead and do it. But realise that you wil need to come up with all your own wiring to do it, as no-one will have a standard howto worked out for Skylines. It's just a matter of abandoning everything that Nissan have done and starting from scratch. You'd probably be better off retrofitting tailght/brakelight globe bases into the front indicator housings and using the taillight circuit for your corner marker and the brake light as the indicator. You'd need to work out how to kill the marker circuit while the indicator is flashing, otherwise it won't flash on-off, just bright-less bright.
    • Hi. A little bit of an update. It maybe(hope not) looks like i would need a new tranny(it would be "maybe" a cheaper or better option anyway) So i need some info. I know i need a different propshaft(i can make custom one) LSD is not a problem cuz the engine will be still(for now) N/A RB20. So if i buy RB25DET NEO tranny...is there something else i need? I read something about push/pull type but i do not know if i need to "change" something or i can just plug n play onto my engine a go? Thanks for the advice
    • Good morning all, Bit of a random question but figured I’d finally throw it out after wondering for a long while. Before I start, I'm hoping to do this purely out of personal preference. I think it would look better at night, and don't mind at all spending a few hours and dollars to get it done. I've copied this from a non-Skyline specific forum, so I apologize for the explanation of our headlight switch setup that we all know. Here we go: Zero lights (switch off) Parking lights (switch position 1) being a rectangular marker on the outside of the housing, my low beam being the projector in the centre (position 2), and a high beam triggered by my turn signal stalk. Most North American cars I’ve owned of this era have power to the amber corner (turning indicator) light as part of the first switch (parking lights). I’d love to have these amber corners receive power when the headlights and parking lights are on (headlight switch), yet still blink when using the turn signal which is of course a separate switch. Hopefully I’ve explained my question correctly. Is anyone aware of a way in which I might be able to achieve this? Thanks in advance
