Hey all. I've recently purchased a silver r33 skyline yay!!! i bought it stock & in really good condition so i can do everything properly and the way i want it. My question is, is it safe to put on a boost controller and turn the boost up with the stock intercooler. I dont want to do anything crazy more like 10psi max. Ive been told any higher than 10psi with the stock injectors and eventually youll need to get them re-aligned. plus i can drive on 10psi everyday safely. I just want to know if its a bad idea to do it without a fmic.

hello there. Even with a fmic i wouldn't run anymore then 10psi with the standard turbo i have heard that 10 is max if you want to play safe. I am no expert but i would turn the boost up to much with out the fmic maybe 8 - 9psi. I would wait till you get all your other little goodies cause you are properly going to put powerfc or something like that i asume if you are going to do it up

eventually i will proably get one. I'm currently a 2nd year apprentice so money is tight. You can pick up a boost controller fairly cheaply so i thought turning it up a little would be some cheap smiles. Also while im here what do you thinks better. getting a boost guage and just screwing it into your a-pillar or getting one of those a-pillar pods and screwing that in or completly replace the a-pillar with the ones moulded to hold guages. I know which one would look better but with money and all too.

well i have a pillar pod that holds my boost and my oil temp, looks good, i would say you have to at least get that one tacho's alone don't look that good in my mind. we all now which one looks the best but it also comes with the biggest price. As far as the other matter of boost up to you but boost doesn't always mean power, if the car is not tuned boost wont help you especially since you dont have any other mods to help with air flo. When i first bought my R32 it was running 10psi with 3" turbo back and fmic but it had only 118rwkw took it to the tuner, he tuned it turned the boost back to standard and i had 140rwkw with less boost just with good tune go figure

I wouldn't go much further then 12 man these are old turbo's and you don't want it to let go on you 14 well i would never run 14psi on a standard turbo no way. A good cheap mod is a fuel reg then a good tune you will get a bit out of one of them also you should try and invest in a dump pipe open her up a bit more let her breath better

for an rb25 turbo, take the wastegate acutator off your RB20 turbo and put it on the 25 turbo. RB25 turbo's run 7PSI standard and RB20 turbos run 10PSI standard. So becasue the RB25 turbo is slightly bigger it will produce more power at 10PSI compared to the RB20 turbo.

As far as boost goes no more than 12 PSI MAX. Unless you get a highflowed turbo from these guys www.gcg.com.au i think they can be rated up to 16 or 22PSI. But you dont want to run too much boost on standard internals otherwise you will fu(k your motor.

17psi the stock turbo will not handle, also if its stock, there is a few mods to be done before increasing boost, if you increase boost with the stock exhuast, then you are really pushing shit uphill, free up the intake and exhuast, boost will also increase slightly

Yer the standard engine can handle about 16 - 17psi no more safely mine is set at 16 so it is pretty safe. as for standard boost in R32 i am pretty sure it is about 5 - 6psi not 10 that is to high. make sure you get a fmic and full exhuast before you start turning boost up or the boost want do you much good, i know it is a slowand longfull process but if you just go throwing boost at it you might do damage then it will cost you a lot more

how can u say its safe? boost doesnt kill the turbo or the engine, the heat assoicated with running it will. the ceramic wheel gets hotter and basically splits and goes into the cat. stock r32 boost is around 10pis and r33 stock boost is around 6-7psi. the fmic will drop temps a little but still the heat associated with that pressure will kill the turbo sooner or later if not sooner

err stock boost on R32 GTS-T is 9-10psi.. on the dash it is 5-6 x100 mmHg

1 atmosphere = 760 mmHg = 29.92 inHg = 14.7 lb/in2 = 101.3 KPa

The weakness in the Skyline turbos is in the ceramic turbine wheel. At anything more than 1bar of boost the wheel will start throwing fins off, the heat will kill the shaft and the rotation speeds/heat will kill the bearings. The stock turbo gets out of its efficiency at 16psi or more, it simply can't flow enough air.

A highflow such as the GCG highflow will increase the compressor wheel size and replace the turbine wheel with a steel wheel that will be able to take higher boost levels. The larger compressor wheel allows you to make more power by flowing more air within the efficiency range of the turbo. I believe the next restriction would be the turbine housing size and some have suggested replacing the stock with a VG30 single turbo item.

Most here have said that 280rwk is the max power to run through stock engine internals but age and condition will all factor into the life of the engine at these power levels.

I've been running 12psi for a while now and it's never been a problem. What will be a problem is the tune of the standard ecu. If changing the turbo etc is on the cards, then getting a replacement like a powerfc will reap rewards in the future and get the most of the small boost increase in the meantime.

yeah i am getting a front mount, full exhaust, and one of those boost controller of this forum next week. my next thing is either coilovers or a different turbo. not sure wat is best with the turbo, probalby in the short term a rb25 turbo but long term an aftermarket one. decisions decisions

Thanks for your help all. I actually currently have a 3" turbo back exhaust and a pod filter but thats it. Everything youv said makes sense tho. I think i might save up get a fmic & get it tuned at a performance shop or something first. I am an apprentice mechanic but i work in a holden dealership so i dont get to learn much about aftermarket or forced induction.

I think ill do just that with the guages, but here comes another really dumb question :s. whats the best way to pass through the firewall. Ive seen people just cut holes in the plugs but i know this can lead to water leaks, excessive heat & noise. Ive always been curious how people get cables or hoses from inside the cabin to the engine bay or under the car.
