Heya,

I want to upgrade the air filter in my GTT so I've done a bit of research and found the following information:

1) Air Panels in the Stock Box is Good (no heat shield required)

2) Air Panels are legal / not defectable like pods

3) Air Pods require a lot more work to install and maintain

4) Effectiveness of both is about the same, differences are almost negligible

Please correct me if any of the above seems wrong or ludicrous.

However, my mind is set on a new panel filter to go straight into the air box... as such, I'm seeking wisdom on the following aspects:

1) Brands + Model Numbers

2) Price

3) Power Gain Achieved

4) Overall Benefit

I am asking this because there seems to be a lot of brand loyalty floating around, but i'm sure as hell it isn't a level battlefield... if you could give me some insight into this, I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks

Stan

K&N Panel Filter I vouch for.

I heard UNI Filter is just as good and cheaper around 80 whereas the K&N is 120.

I changed to a POD, and now turning back to panel, wanting to keep it quiet.

So a panel filter will be noise free? This is in comparison to a pod filter that has a distinct "woosh" sound...

I'm not too fussed about noisy or not noisy so long as it is within the law and does not attract trouble.

Depending on which pod you get, some are louder than others. I have an Apex one, and it whooshes like no 2morrow. If you boost, it will attract attention, and I dont like that.

The panel will be the best choice if you dont want the sound, and less attention. THe pod is legal if it is mounted to the car, so it cant wobble around, but a commong mistake cops do is, they pull you over for thinking you have a BOV but really you only have a POD.

This has happened to me, they checked the BOV and came to the conclusion that this BOV just must be louder than normal etc.

If the POD wasnt there in the first place, wouldnt have had the trouble. But then again, I shouldnt have boosted right near them, but how am I gonna pick up speed to maintain the speed of the traffic behind me?

Those are just my thoughts, yes the induction noise is tuff, but I wish the pod didnt have to go pssst after you let go of the throttle.

I went K&N panel when I had an R31 and felt an overall improvement.

So with the R33, a K&N went in straight away then exhaust etc in quick time. I haven't done any testing or have any data and never tried a pod.

Others may have facts and figures. I'm just happy with it .

LATEST UPDATE:

Just went down to my local AutoOne and ordered my K&N Panel... I'm relying on all of your advice for this one! It should be here on Tuesday or Wednesday so I'll be looking forward to that big time.

One thing though, the guys there told me to drive the car pretty hard after initial installation so that the ECU can reprogramme itself to the new filter... is this true?

Thanks again,

Will keep you all posted on the effects of the panel install!

I've got a K&N in mine... fairly quiet.. I've cut a feed out of the bottom of the box to the front bar, so when you do that you can hear it sucking a bit more.. but its nowhere near as loud as a pod.

Doesn't the stock air box in the R34 take air from top down? So if I was to cut the bottom like you, wouldn't the air bypass the filter and go straight to the AFM... this could cause damage as the air is unfiltered?

actually, sorry, the r34/r33 is different to r32.. but you can pipe into the top because as you say you want for the filter to still be doing its job before the AFM. It really depends on the snorkel design of the R34 I guess as to whether this is needed. I've just noticed a bit of an improvement with doing this on my car.

Thanks predator! I'm thinking about porting the box and then using some aluminium foil tubing to duct it into a better position for intake

Lucien: with resetting the ECU on the 34, is it just enough to follow the steps in the other forums (disconnecting negative terminal, drain battery / power, reconnect then drive)?

As far as I know, yes, but R34 owners can probably comment.

BTW, pump the brakes a couple of times when the battery is disconnected to speed up the process.

Lucien.

I wouldn't bother resetting the ecu. I didn't. I noticed an immediate improvement with a Nismo panel filter.

I have 228rwkw with stock box, no cutting it up or anything. The GTT that Sydneykid always talks about is the same with 265rwkw.
