What method did you use to fit the AFM in the pipe?

I'm guessing you used the same ID pipe as the original ID of the AFM?

Yes, I made a simple flat plate flange out of stainless steel and welded a bit of 76mm pipe to the inlet side and then used silicon pipe to connect it up to the rest of the 76mm custom intercooler pipework. I've used a GReddy E-manage to handle all the fuelling changes.

u can just buy an adapter plate to fit on to the afm. gtskoop im running an rb25det.if you want ill post pics of my engine bay on here.

I have done this a couple of times on RB20's and 25's and all I will say is that it makes a HUGE difference to the tune... As far as reliability for the AFM I haven't seen any specific problems, but it only makes sense that the pressurised warmer air with slight oil from the turbo would decrease the life of the AFM... but seeing as most of them are ok after 10 years, if it halfs the life to 5 years??

I run a Z32 AFM after the cooler on my CA, mainly cause there's a 4" bellmouth on the turbo and space is restrictive so it had to be after the cooler.. seems to work really well with no immediate reliabilty probs...

Can you elaborate why it has made a difference to the tune? Differnece in tuning with just SAFC or a Full E-Manage type system? More accurate A/F ratios? More increaed in power? Ease of tune?...

Done it to a few big hp cars with large turbo's to stop the air reversion problem which plays hell with the AFM causing hunting as it comes back to idle.

We did one in particular on a car that already had been tuned by us using one of the famous ( infamous ?? ) Lumpyroms.

All I can tell you is when we changed it to post intercooler, it ran totally different and required virtually complete retuning.

And yes it was an RB25DET and yes we did chip the Nissan computer that plugs in to the factory wiring plug and no it wasn't an RB25 computer :( :(

i run blowthru maf on my car as ive got limited space for maf mounting near the turbo inlet (turbo inlet is 4").

so far its been good to me, but as stated before it can require retuning as mine required me to fiddle with the ecu's k consant to get it to run right (rechipped ecu).

as far as pipe work ive got 2.5" charge piping and use adaptors from 2.5 --> 3 to go to and from the maf and havent had any problems thus far.

however i have blown the little plastic square cover off of the maf which then in turn caused a massive boost leak, but after a thourough cleaning and a stern resilliconing it hasnt leaked again and actualy spools faster :).

this is actualy on a rb20det swapped into a s14 chassis currently making 288rwkw's before tuning......

    • Among other things yes. Making sure to either use an oil pressure regulator or the right restrictor size for your oil pump/range of oil viscosities you intend to run, making sure you plumb the lines correctly, turbo should be placed such that it siphons properly even when the water pump isn't turning so you don't boil coolant in the turbo after shutdown, oil return should be low resistance and also preferably picking the one that is most likely to return to the pickup as opposed to some other irrelevant part of the pan. It's far from impossible to figure this out but I have seen people really, really struggle and if that's the case it's easier to just take the path of least resistance. To me, bolt-on twin turbos are a fixed cost whereas single turbo is almost unbounded.
    • Latest round of updates on the car. I purchased and installed a SWS clutch slipper to help with 60ft times and got some second-hand good condition 275/40R17 Hoosier DR2 radials. Test and tune in November showed the tyres were an upgrade over my over 15 year old mickey Thompson's and I got a 1.8 second 60ft and pb et of 11.71 but even then, that run wasn't great due to rain and driver error (the event got called off 10 minutes later fast forward to the weekend just gone 25th of Jan and there was finally a break in the weather to let racing happen. The first run the track was slippery and only managed a 12.1@129 Second run the track was better and got a new pb et and mph: 11.54@131   Lith and I then worked out that I installed the previously mentioned clutch slipper incorrectly and its never been working, and I had just been dumping the clutch the entire time, we also noticed it was on street boost and not race boost. So I lined up for a third run with the car turned up in the first two gears, but the passengers side axle objected to clutch dumps and left the chat which stopped my weekend.   so there will be another attempt in the future once I replace the tyres as they rubbed and are stuffed now. but a low 11 should be on the cards.
    • Ceramic coating and heat shielding, you mean?
    • Turbos don't require pulling the motor apart so that's "easier". I would recommend the Nismo R3 turbos instead if you want to do stock twin turbo. It doesn't make as much power as the 2530s but it's only like ~50 whp off the mark and should have better response (ball bearing CHRA, slightly smaller turbo). A local that went with a Garrett G30 and 6boost manifold recently nearly burned his car to the ground after the hood insulator started melting and and burning so if you go single turbo I recommend doing a lot of research and validation work to make sure you don't do the same.
