skyline vs commodore = who would win?

Recommended Posts

Santhas,

My VS appeared to handle the stock power level + an exhaust fine, it was only once I threw a mild cam and ecu in to it when thigns started to break.

My diff went, didn't clunk, just bearings began making strange loud noises that made it sound as if it was going to lock up and send you in to the guard railing any minute, it also was openwheeling, the gearbox went on a hard launch against some crap HQ V8 4speed thing.

Funny thing was as I was trying to work out where my gears had gone I saw the sticker on his rear window "Classic not plastic" as he roared past.

I drove it the same as I have the skyline, I have now eased up on the skyline as i'm not as much of a hoon as I was when 19.

The VS had IRS, comparing the designed and look they look weak, its apparently a common problem for the rear subframe to split from the diff mount bolt holes when you start putting some decent power through them.

It was lowered with bilsteins, whiteline shocks and sway bars, it also had a whiteline camber kit on the arse end, who knows maybe lowering the IRS VS commodores and slapping the camber kit on them places too much strain on the subframe.

BUT it doesn't really explain why it split the subframe like a can opener attacked it from the diff mount bolt, I still suspect as suggest to me when it happened that the rear ends on them cannot handle big launches and hard gearchanges when making decent power.

Not stock power, as really whats 130rwkw. :P Stuff all. lol

Man, sounded like something really went pear shaped...

The real question is, why did you give it to it when lining up against the HQ? Can't believe what a massive failure that was though. Ahh well, at the moment i'm seriously open minded about what car to get next.....about 15k budget.

These theads always suck when people post replys with no evidence just they just post what they think would happen.

r33 gts25 vs any non supercharged v6 factory commodore would be close in stock vs stock form exept for maybe the new vz with the new all aloy 3.6ltr V6 they go a fair bit better than the old 3.8's the factory claimed times are very similar.

As for a 3.5ltr magna beeting a auto r33 gtst id doubt it mate.

Warren you need to relax :)

I only 'ever' type something if I am confident in what i am saying, the problem with all these kind of threads is people like yourself (and ARKON) compare modified Skylines with Standard competitors making any comparison totally irrelevant, liner32 in his first post said the R33 has an exhaust otherwise stock...why then assume its modified and say it'll beat a V6 or V8 VT Commodore..?

Arkon from your sig I can see your car is hardly standard, hence i'm sure it would beat a TJ Magna, my 'standard' Magna ran a 15.8, a 'standard' R33 GTsT would be no quicker :D

Standard R33 Gtst auto sedan runs 15 flat.

So your magna is 0.8 seconds off at around 160km/h and about 3-4 car lengths behind... so in fact a "standard" skyline GTST sedan is significantly quicker than any "standard" Magna, end of...

Have a go at people for stating opinions with no evidence, then you come out with an opinion with no evidence! Being a little hypocritical aren't you?

I think the comparison was with a GTS and a 3.5 Magna, which is a more suitable comparison.

I'm unsure what model a TJ is but I do know the new magna's do go very well, I've driven a NA R33 back when I was looking at my R32. Sorry to say manual for manual the Magna will easily kill the R33 NA, especially from a standing start to 100km/h. Drive one and you will know what I mean. The power delivery and flexibility of the motor/gear ratios makes the car quite zippy and fun to drive.

My other halfs brother often brings the new mitsi's home from his work, they go very very well, especially the manuals. So much torque down low from such a small motor.

Mmmm despite the claimed power outputs of the VZ, the 175 kw version is very doughy, although the 190 kw version is very very quick. Dont know why but there seems to be more then a 15 kw difference between the two.....

As to the NA 3.8's verses GTSs, well my VP must be a freak, or the previous owner cammed it without telling me (15.4 1/4), but I know without a doubt there would be no comparison between the two. The massive torque available from down low in the range is enough to get the jump, and the GTS just doesnt have the top end to catch it.

But in the looks stakes......Vp Wagons unfortunately dont go down well with the fairer sex....

That is one quick VP. My mates got one and it is fast but not that fast. Though he says he has raced an NA R33, and beat it without too much trouble. I think it was an auto. His VP is a manual with just extractors & zorst.

LOL...I know its a Skyline website but it still amuses me how people will overate standard Skylines sometimes, a standard auto GENIII VT would cream a standard auto R33 GTsT :)

My TJ 3.5 Auto Magna would cream a Standard R33 auto GTsT :O

Yeah sorry dude but my GTs-T blew the pants off of both a 3.5 Magna and a

GenIII

I mean GenIII still use push rods dont they!?

But sad to say that i think the N/A skyline would have its work cut out for it.

But good luck dude.

Saw a dead stock looking VS V6 Auto commodore with P plates stuck on it at Mildrens yesterday.

Walked around to the front to see 2 turbo's bolted on to each bank.

The thing made 240rwkw at 8psi and just over 300rwkw on 12psi. :O

Theres nothing really wrong with push rods. If the system works, no need to change it. NASCAR engines push upwards of 750hp with no forced induction and those engines use pushrods and carburetors.

Commodores are shit and non turbo skylines are shit!! stick with boost :P

You must be the brains of the outfit. Cars are cars. Each with their own different qualities. Skylines are fast and nimble, Commodores are more practical and cheap.

Maybe not that fast anymore. Damn clutch has ruined thrush bearings. New brakes today though :) But i think it would still crack a 15.6 at least. Note to kids: Do not attack your own heads with a dremel, it can lead to unpredictable results..... Like saving nearly a second off your ET.

Yes I understand that there are different cars for different applications. Eg. I have a modded skyline for Sundays and looking for a Van as an everyday.

Overall the build quality of commodores is very very poor. My dad has worked for GM for the last 20 years and is currently a leading hand engineer working in mechanical engineering and robitical engineering (what ever all that means) but he tells me on a day to say basis how poor the quality is and how it is just getting worse as more cheap imports come in.

Each to there own..

Yes i agree with the build quality. My dash is falling apart..... But I had $5000 to spend on a car 3 years ago, it was fast, it was in good condition, so i thought it was a good deal. Given the oppurtunity again I probably wouldn't have bought it again, maybe saving a little more for a R32 GTSt or something. Which is what im saving for atm.

These days the build quality of cars such as Land Rovers (I worked at a Land Rover servicing place for a while) is decreasing, almost to coincide with warranty running out. (A new mirror and servo's costs about $1600 for a Discovery 3). Thats how they're making their money unfortunately.

But yes i agree on the Skylines being better built cars. Although it wasn't particularly fast, the NA R33 i was in was solidly built, and looked great! Hence the reason I want one.

    • Welcome.  Glad to hear that you have gained some knowledge that has helped you. I believe the only fix for the power steer belt is an electric conversion with a Holden astra pump. If you get a chance, post pics of your car, please. 🙂

    • Harness update time have had great fun and learnt so much already so far with this project. I started off making both the ignition and injector sub harnesses in the hope any mistakes i made here aren't as hard to undo and learn from as the main harness.  A cool comparison of the old harness using presumably TXL wire and the new which is using Tezel. Also opted to use DTM plugs to keep the whole setup as neat and tidy as possible and tucked the wiring under the coil bracket to try and keep it all from sticking out too much. Although the injector harness, I'm not overly happy with as I'm still using the rubber boots that are supplied with the type of plugs it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb with the white identifiers so a slight redesign may be done.   Then it was main harness time and most importantly trying to route it nice and away from the heat it will use the OEM heater hose routing which is no longer present to keep the harness up high and secure. it's amazing how much smaller this harness is able to be compared to the old one. plugged everything into the emtron and with the help of the tuner again attempted to start it up and instantly fired up and running smoothly on all 6 which was a big shock to myself. So still some routing and adjusting to be done for the final fit up and installing a knock sensor harness plug which is in the post all has gone surprisingly well.     The old harness for shits and giggles.
