Hey guys, have had my r32 gts-t now for about a month and am now bored of the power as it really doesnt compare to my previous car. Looking at getting a Garrett GT2871R turbo with manifold, full 3"exhaust, Hybrid FMIC kit, fuel pump, GTR injectors and Microtech computer. How much power do you think i would realistically be looking at?

i just put a GT30 on my R32 gts-t with ecu wolf 3d,3" turbo back exhuast, injectors, 45mm waste gate, fmic, fuel reg and pod and i am getting 210rwkw, thats with the standard pump i need to put a bigger pump then i shoud be up around the 230 - 240 mark i think. Full boost doesn't come on till about 4200rpm but when it does it kicks you in the a*se

memph waht mods do u have?
the best power upgrade you can do to an R32 is put an RB25 in it :P

My 2 cents :P

I put an RB25 in with a microtech LT-8s

Used my existing full exhaust, FMIC, Greddy Profec B II @ 0.85bar, with walbro pump and FPR..

Thats about it.

was going to modify my rb20 till i did a fair bit of research and it just wasnt worth it. :) IMO anyhow.

Cheers

the problem with putting on a bigger turbo on the RB20 is turbo lag. For street use it'd suck (full boost by 4,000rpm is crap), you shift before 4,000 street driving anyway.

RB25 would be the go as you'd have a fair amount of response off boost (even with a bigger turbo). 300rwkw is achievable with RB25.

agreed.

that was one of my main reasons for choosing the Rb25...

My car will always be a street driven car...

So i didnt want something that was going to be annoying to drive :P

There is a thread about some bloke who has just put a VG30 Exhaust housing onto his already hiflowed (gcg) standard turbo and is now making a solid 270rwkw

From what ive seen that would be near impossible with an RB20 considering that guy has standard internals etc :P

hehe. dang!

Either way its far moer pleasing to have a RB25 over an Rb20..

the research i did into RB30's wasnt too extensive so its hard to comment.

But from the looks of it all i think the RB25 was a far more straight forward thing to do :P

Though from the results of some people it does indeed look the RB30 has more to offer.

But like i said. cant complain :P

Thats a good point, but i look at it differently. My car is a street driven car, but even the std GTST has too much power to be fun on the street. Sounds silly but if you row thru 2nd and 3rd gear then jump on the anchors, row back to 2nd and go thru a corner...there goes your licence.

So as a road car you cant enjoy anything the car has to offer...so the fact that my thing is a little dull under 3,500rpm doesnt bother me cause it means i can cruise around and the car gets 9.6L/100km (highway) and about 11L/100km city driving and it doesnt attract any attention. Give it a bootful and the thing is pretty quick.:P

Driving a friends R33 GTST, i found that was annoying to drive as the thing was hitting 14psi before 3,000rpm and you couldnt potter around, it always wanted to boost and was only ever a heartbeat away from braking traction in the lower gears. Was food fun to have a punt in, but day to day it would pi55 me off:)

So i suppose it depends what you want from a street car, and how keen you are on falling victim to police/courts etc

Cant see an RB20 making near that power with such a simple turbo upgrade and the saem boost. Give me 22-24psi and i can:)

But i think i could make 250rwkws with the same boost as him if i had the same cams...but could never offer the same response low end pull....and for that matter be shy up top as well:( RB20s really need to run much higher boost if they are going to make similar power once you get up to good power:(

Cant say that i have really looked at it that way...

But i think i can sort or see where you are coming from after driving my car with the Rb25 for about a month..

It is a little hard to drive around off boost as you are saying... No matter where you are or what sort of speed your doing, in any gear for that matter, it really does want to go more :P

I figure you could probably do the same sort of thing though..

As in throw a bigger turbo on. where you would lose a little response.. then cruise around the streets under the revs at which your car is an animal :P

I think maybe a lower diff ratio could help me aswell.. as i find when driving around that my revs are about 1k higher than i would like them to be...

as in cruising along at 100 on free way or 80 on the highway my revs sit at around 3000.. which is annoying :)

but the low down power of the 25 is deffinately nice... someone explained it in another thread pretty well. just saying how with the Rb25 you can enter a roundabout or slow speed corner in 3rd or 4th at 30 or 40k's an hour and accelerate out with ease...

Though thinking about it. its not like its a major effort to shift back a gear or two :)

hehe..

lol...yeh if im cruising down the street in 4th, i come to a corner, i have to change gears...so may as well grab 2nd rather then 3rd...i dont get the go around corners in 3rd/4th thing:)

...and despite what ppl say, i have found the smaller engines with big turbos offer better power delivery then larger displacement engines. Probably too many variables in there, but if Cubes RB30 is lighting it up at 2,000rpm, they look to be animals to tie down to the road. I think they still can have good power down, but he is probably making 3 x the power i am at under 3,000rpm:(

Basically if you want under 250rwkws then stick with the RB20. If you want lots of bottom end shove get a 2510, but if your not goign to be happy with 200rwkws then again its time to ditch the RB20:(

but if you look at the cost. it may be cheaper to be happy with the power your rb25 is making than to try and make that power with the rb20... and then, if for some reason you want a heap more power... its always there as a much greater potential in the rb25 than the 20...

i can see both views though.. comes down to what you like :P

its not like the RB20 is pathetic...

Better than have a ca18 :P *cough*

That was my thery with my RB20 i didn't really want much over 200rwkw, and this way with my mods it is pretty laggy but just to drive around normally it is good no boosting, which is good in the wet cause they are bad enough in the dry when you get stuck in to them. Mine doesn't hit boost till about the 4,000 mark which that suits me so it all depends what sort of power he wants as you gus said. Is it true that the RB20 is good for about 250rwkw or is that pushing it with standard internals

all very true comments.. the early turbo nissans were in many ways engineered with post-fuel crisis in mind.. the idea was that you pottered around off boost, until you needed the power, then it kicked into song. Hence the 2L on the HR31 and things right from mid-80's or so, which turned into the more advanced rb20det.

Then in the 90's v8's became a lot more efficient, so they had to start raising the capacity a little.

Read an article on it recently, and the design methodologies the japanese were trying to achieve during the 80's and 90's.. interesting stuff.
