Victorian Power to Weight Rules

Hey boys and girls,

well since I've lost my license and had my 1st car written off I've started to consider what i want in my next car.

I've been considering all sorts of cars but my main problem is that what ever i drive i want it to be nice, fast BUT 100% legal and I'm aloud to drive it.

So i started off on cars that are nice to cruise in and will be legal (or at least i thought they were)

R33 GTS-t M-spec

nice cars okay not everyones choice but the problem is that when you go to VicRoads and read about P platers power to weight the car is over. it isn't in the list but if your smart enough to do the maths it is over.. and vicroads state that its your responsibility not to drive a car that has a power to weight that is over..

185kw / 1.35 tone = 137kw per tone.. therefore not aloud

R32 GTS-t M-spec

love the car but the lack of torque would drive me nuts when taking off in 1st... but i could cope

problem its over the power to weight

160kw / 1.26 = 126kw per tone no go again.

so i then started to think about R31 coupes and then realised that I'll want to have a sliver top in it cause the chances of getting a NICS is to high.

BUT hold on a second... how come I've seen and know so many Victorian P Platers that drive GTS-t and i even know some that drive R34 GTt and they are way over.

How can this be? cops can't be that stupid to not know how to work out a simple equation like that...

it even worse to think that you can't even drive a falcon with the new DOHC 4lt engine...

i just would like peoples opinions on how so much can be gotten away with but as soon as i get a R32 GTR I'll get done...

what is the power to weight limit for p platers?

125kw per tone and its measured at the flywheel and the weight is the manifacturors cerb weight.

GTSt's 158 kw, I'm pretty sure this brings it just under, if not the four door is 1290kgs, unlike the coupe which is 1260

158kw at fly still takes the cars weight over the power to weight.... but that aside my question that i've been asking is how can it be so that so many p platers drive the GTS model skylines...

they are doing it the same way everyone else is; illegally.

I have a 32 gtst, but it is a sedan, everyone who has a manual gtst coupe on their P's is driving illegally

its a $107 fine, no points, r32's are about 1 kw under i belive so they are legal...

you wouldnt be supprised how many guys have 33's on thier p's in vic.... cops just dont inforce it... they have other things to police .... keeping thier eye on just skylines and p platers driving them isnt very high on thier to do list

ok my idea... buy a R32 GTR then put a GTS-t body kit on it remove all the stuff that says RB26 n then hide one of the air intakes in a custom build/ water & dust proof box n then get a smaller FMIC so u can just see it not so it sticks out like all hell... thats just my idea or u could just remove the GTR body kit n badges n replace with GTS-t stuff n hope u dont get pulled over

it would be the ultimate sleeper coz all the dudes in their 33's would go good luck with the 2l engine when really u have a 2.6l TT under the hood :innocent:

*some* or a cop, can tell. Someone on here got done when he popped the hood of his r32 gtst that had a RB25 transplant and the policeman noticed and the person got done.

And r32 gtst's are legal, I have a different weight figure, I'll try and find it.

okay, thats weird.. my figures are the same. So maybe I'm not doing something right, but I have NEVER heard of someone being done for powerweight when driving a r32gtst so I'm sure you would be fine if you wanted to go down that path. I noticed your profile says your 21, assuming you got your license early when you were 18 you will be getting your full licenense soon, so if you get a car over the p/w ratio then you won't have to worry too long... unless you got your license recently or something

Hi guys

The rule is based on factory flywheel output and car weight. The auto and manual are pretty much on par in weight and make the same flywheel figure so auto vs manual is no diff.

R32 Skyline GTS-T on p plates is LEGAL as it does not exceed 125kw per tonne.

R33 Skyline GTS25t on p plates is ILLEGAL as it does exceed 125kw per tonne.

R34 Skyline GTT on p plates is ILLEGAL as it does exceed 125kw per tonne.

Again if you have 3 speed auto, 6 speed manual, 2 speed auto stall it wont matter as the rule is based on the factory output at flywheel vs factory weight. Those driving R33 GTS25t's on p plates are doing so illegally and are taking a risk. The rule is not enforced very well and cops generally don't enforce it (no idea why not). There are many many p platers driving cars that exceed this rule. Most v8's go over this "limit" too but its more obvious in a v8 vs a japanase turbo milk carton engine.

also regarding engine conversions the r32 gts-t m spec never came with the factory rb26 so vicroads or the police would have a hard time working out the "definitive" rule on an engine swap. as the gtr weighed differently to the r32 gts-t. im sure they would work out some way to screw you just not sure how exactly

also you can probably argue that your engine is older than factory output therefore its not outputting factory power levels, such as its got 100,000 on the clock therefore the power is 5% less so its not making the factory quoted level but the cops/vicroads wont care. your breaking the law, which states factory output and weight so bad luck

i've been surffing the net and have found heaps of different power outputs and kerb weights for the R32 GTS-t but at one site i found that there kerb weight for a manual 5 sp is 1320kg and they put out 158kw at the fly... there fore its only 120ishkw's per tonne.. yeah one that i can drive.. but could i handle the rb20 or should i get another Aussie R31 and wait till i'm off my P's to get something with a little (actually a lot) more go.. ie GTR or 300zx or something like that..

i say the chioce of an aussie r31 cause my last one i owned.. had some legal mods and was able to keep up with a R32 GTS-t M-spec running 10psi with FMIC and zorst. i think it would be better to stick to the when you do it do it once rule cause that way i'll get a car that i love and will be all i want without having to worry about getting done for power to weight

OMG i think this is the 100th time i have seen something about power to weight ratio in these forums, and ive obly being a member for a few months, would hate to see what it has being like in the past.

This has being covered in many topics, these even one right above it in this forum. lol. so go do a search and u will find the power figures others have posted and what is legal and what is not.
