does anyone know whether the 2560 that pnblight is talking about is the same as the gt2860r 707160-5?

Speaking to TurboTech over here in Perth, it would seem that the part numbers starting with 707160 are indeed the GTR type flange. There are 4 versions.

707160-5, 707160-7, and I can't remember the other two off hand. (I think they may be -9 and -10, but don't quote me)

If you got to www.turbobygarrett.com they only mention the -5 and -7.

Note that on this site, it refers to them as 2860r.

But as Pete will tell you, his are stamped 2560r (still with 707160-5 stamped on them also)

Now, in Turbotech's parts list, the 707160-5 and -7 are also referred to as 2560r, not 2860r

However, there is a place on the Garrett website which mentions that they have a new naming convention in place. Here is a quote from that page:

The biggest change related to the nomenclature is this: units which utilize a 53mm turbine wheel (as measured at the inducer) are now referred to as "GT25" frame size, while units employing the slightly larger 53.85mm turbine wheel are now referred to as "GT28" frame size.

For those familiar with our product range, this means that the unit formerly known as "the GT28R" (part number 466541-1) is now in the GT25R family. More specifically, it is now a GT2560R model.

I would say that this is what is causing the confusion between the 2560r/2860r.

The important thing is, it is the 707160-x range that we are talking about and bolts up to the GTR flange. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but this is how it appears to me.

It would also appear, if you get out the specs on all these turbos that the -5 and -7 Garretts are very similar spec to the HKS2530 and GT-SS respectively.

So! I am thinking of a pair of 707160-7 for myself... Anyone reading this tried them? Or am I pioneering them? (its the one time I don't want to be first....)

R32 TT: You raise an interesting point. The -7 seems to be very similar to the GT-SSs.

TURBINE:

Wheel = 53.85mm

Exducer = 42.40 (??? Can someone confirm?)

Trim = 62

A/R = 0.64

COMPRESSOR:

Trim = 56

Inducer = 44.46

Exducer = 59.41

A/R = 0.42

TURBINE:

Wheel = 53.85mm

Exduce = 42.40

It looks to be within a poofteenth of the GT-SS's to me: in fact how much of that is just more accurate/different measurement?. Amazing, it was staring me in the face.

Yeah - I agree. So a pair of GT-SS's might be had for quite a lot less that a pair of GT-SS's if you know what I mean.. <damn should have kept that to myself!> :P

I am just running stocko R32 GT-R turbos at the moment. I have to pull them off shortly to fix a head-to-turbo-manifold leak so I am installing some goodies at the same time. That got me thinking... and I figured given the propensity of the stocko turbos to let go, and the few horror stories of reversion, its probably reasonably cheap insurance to change them let alone the other advantages of steel wheeled bb turbos and 15 odd years of development.

However the rest of my car is very stock and I don't have the money to upgrade all the support systems at the moment. I want to try and find a turbo that gives good performance -- average power is what I care about -- on a stock car but also has some headroom for future modifications (cams, cam gears, injectors, etc). The GT-SS seems about right but the HKS price is too rich for me.

I'll find out what the four are for you and post them up. (will just need a couple of days). For me, the -5 and -7 were the only two I was interested in since the others were bigger than these and I am after low down response, mid range etc... But give me a couple of days and I'll find out for you.

You and I have a similar line of thinking then.

Except my front turbo did let go just a couple of weeks ago. I already had made the decision to get new turbos, but they aren't in the country at the moment and so I guess it was just bad luck... (oh and the fact the stockies had been driven to 1.2 bar previously! It wasn't me. Honest.)

I'm looking at the same thing as you. Average power under the curve rather than peak hp. I figure since the stock turbos running 1.1bar got me a 12.3, then GT-SS equivalents, and better dumps etc will get me in the high 11's. Fast car in anyones book - and should be good on the tight twisty stuff.

I have a few mods done on both intake and exhaust. ECU and injectors are done too. Stock cams though. Just waiting for the turbo's. I've had the cast iron Exhaust manifold, dumps and front pipes ceramic coated this week, so I am a little bit excited (and nervous about the possible ceramic in my motor)

Pity you're not in Perth to check it out, but the 707160-7 is what will be going on my car at this stage. So hopefully they aren't far away. (Garrett doesn't seem to have a solid ETA). Stay tuned and I'll let you know how they go,

your turbo's are about 2 weeks so I have heard. The other GTR turbo's are GT2560R p/n 707160-9 comp wheel 45mm Trim 55 a/r 0.42 turbine 42mm trim 62 a/r 0.64 no actuator supplied 375hp. GT2560R p/n 707160-10 comp wheel 51mm trim 52 a/r 0.60 turbine 47mm trim 76 a/r 0.64 actuator supplied 450hp.

Hmmm... can anyone say "HKS GT-RS" ? (707160-10)

The -9 looks like the odd one out. Appears to be similar spec to the -7. But I am not sure of the other differences? It was suggested to me by someone else that only the -5 and -7 actually have the bolt on GTR format. Where as the -9 and -10 would need to be adapted. But this is totally second hand info - so don't quote me on it. If anyone knows better let us know.

That compressor map shown above is not applicable as its tip height is greater than most of the other 60mm compressors . It also comes std with a .60ARR T04B compressor cover - in old speak its known as the GT28RS . It does not use the "compact style" GT28 exhaust housing intended for RB26's .

The GTR Upgrade as we like to call it, 707160-5 is in on MONDAY (5 sets reserved for us).

I have enquired about the -7, at this stage no confirmed ETA or whether they have been ordered.

the 707160-10 has the specs of the GTR-S.

Disco, you are quite right there, the 707160-5 is basically a GT28RS, but with the bolt on setup for the RB26, using all standard lines, manifolds and dump pipes.

We have them in next week and have presold 3 sets already, so if you want them and are willing to place a 50% deposit

Well - I can tell you I just had one pair of 706160-7 arrive.

They are apart at the moment while I get the exhaust housings ceramic coated.

Hopefully I would say they'll be back on the car and running within the next 2 weeks. (hopefully).

I have thrown some photos up, along with some pics for comparison of the stock turbos and some of my manifolds after being ceramic coated. What you can't really see is that the exhaust housing is noticeably larger.

I'm sure its something everyone has probably seen before, but here they are anyway. If anyone wants something specific photographed on them just let me know,

ok well - a bit more information you might find interesting.

Sure the Garrett are cheaper to buy than the HKS equiv.

Prices for 707160-7 and -5 have been hitting around the $2500-$2700 mark.

Nengun prices for HKS GT-SS have been around the $3200 mark I believe.

I have however just bought the studs/nuts and gaskets to got with the 707160-7's that I bought - as none of these come with the turbos.

Try $450 for the studs/nuts (18 all up) and $170 for the gaskets.

From what I understand - the HKS 'kit' has all of this included?

So now, the HKS/Garrett pricing looks much closer to a dead heat.

Either way - when buying your turbos - ask if all this comes with them or not...

nice work. I dunno if it's just me but they look identical to the R34 GTR N1 turbos... very interesting :P

i don't know if anyone has noticed but there is nothing in the " FORCED INDUCTION QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE" under RB26. This would be a good thread to put there for people trying to decide what turbos to put on there gtr. just an idea????????

Studs/nuts should cost you about $100 max. Don't buy Nissan genuine, they charge a fortune (as you seem to have found out :P) for no reason at all. They are fairly standard bits and cost about $3 a pop aftermarket. Gaskets are expensive unfortunately: you can buy some aftermarket ones if you want (not turbo --> dump though).

If its any consolation, if you ordered the HKS GT-SS's and get pinged with customs/duty you could be up for more like $3800.

Hey there Lucien, yeah - I thought maybe it was a bit over the top.

My mechanic thought about it for a bit, and then just decided to go genuine. He doesn't do Skyline's much (more of a V8 background) and perhaps just didn't want the stuff around of getting/finding the right parts? But he did say to me that he had seen some aftermarket ones fail and that given the labour to replace - felt it was better to go genuine in this case.

Are they any different really?? I don't know. But oh boy the price was an unwelcome surprise...

I can't wait until this fiasco is over. My Credit Card has taken a hiding...

    • I'm seeing torque specs all over the place for the OUTER tie rod, but none for the INNER tie rod, where it connects to the steering rack. Even in videos, people are just tightening em up as much as they can with a wrench and that's it. Anything tightened down without torque makes me nervous. Anyone know what the spec is for it?

    • Ye good idea , would have never thought of something like that. Might aswell do it to every pulley and the balancer while I’m there 
    • Use an LS1 or similar, via kit like Frenchy's. But.... It's probably not the alternator. It sounds like belt squeal, which would be because the pulleys are glazed. Rub every groove on the pulleys with 120 grit paper. Report back. Oh, and new belts afterwards too. The old new ones will be shitted up already.
    • Hello all I have 2 r34 sedans , one turbo one na, only recently aquired the na 34.  Man what is with these things.... My turbo 34 started sounding like a super charger, it was screaming at anything above 4000rpm , I took the alternator apart and replaced the front bearing which is the only one I think you can access and it did not fix the issue so presumably the bearing in the rear of the alternator is gone. ( diagnosed it was the alternator by taking off the aux belts one by one to figure out which pulley or bearing it was )  My friend gave me one he had lying around, Installed it , it did not squeal for maybe 500kms and now its started to squeal again briefly on startup  Recently got an na r34 and I replaced the timing belt, water pump + all the auxillirary belts. Runs amazing but it suddenly developed the same squeaking problem but significantly worse, Ive had my neighbour come down screaming at me because it was waking her up everytime I moved the car. It takes a good 2 minutes before it quietens down.  Im yet to diagnose where its coming from but im fairly sure its coming from the alternator aswell. My question isnt about how to fix it but rather where can you get a new alternator for an rb25 neo??? Ive searched everywhere but I havent been able to find a direct fit oem type replacement thats not genuine. All the automotive stores sell an oex one - BXA035 - which I picked up for cheap through a friend with staff discount , got it home only to find the connector is completelty different.... As far as im aware bxa035 is for rb20/30's and after a bit of figuring out the bxa035 has an ev14 type connector, which is tiny compared to the rb25 connector. I actually had an ev14 connector lying around which I was considering just replacing the bigger plug with to get the alternator working but the bxa035 is rated for 70amp vs the rb25 alternators are 90amp ( or so ive been told ? ) That paired along with the fact im about to install an amp + sub in the back and I have the stock sized small battery Im not sure itll do the job unless anyone has another opinion?  I know and have seen all the websites selling the ls1 alternator conversion kit but I am not going down that route, nor do I have the money to. Hopefully I can figure out how to get 2 brand new alternators for both cars. I would buy second hand which there seems to be many of but considering how common this seems to be im sure If I installed a second hand one it would start squealing in no time  Or even better if anyone knows how to fix the issue directly with the alternator itself...
