starter motor screeching

Recently the r32 developed a weird problem

This happens every now and then but when i try to start the car, i get that loud screech (the one you hear if you tried cranking the engine whilst its ON). However i'm getting it when the car is OFF. After a couple of attempts, its starts normally.

Does anyone know whats going on?

The starter motor isn't throwing out the starter gear enough to engage with the flywheel so it's just grinding against it. Kind of like when you're using a drill to do up a phillips head screw and it skips.

Sounds like the starter motor needs looking at and possibly lubricating at the gear end so it can throw it out properly.

have you checked to see whether you battery is on its way out? your problem sounded very similar to mine and before thinking of the worse I found out it was just a cracked battery terminal.

Is lubing the starter motor a DIY job?

Mine did exactly the same thing and the solinoid was just not on tight enough, tightened it up and voila perfect again

Rolls is right - if it isn't getting enough current it won't throw the gear out. Try checking the terminals. If that doesn't work pulling it out is only two bolts.
