Normally oils dont help a worn viscous diff because the viscous unit itself is sealed and uses its own internal fluid. Normal clutch or torsen type LSDs use the diff fluid's frictional characteristics to lock up so changing oils in those can help..

When I looked in to it a reco viscous is not an option as the the thick fluid stuff that makes the lsd a lsd is very very difficult to get a hold of.

The only real option is to shim it up. It costs around $350 or so. I'll be doing this as mine is stuffed.

Mine has been single spinning out of a corner now for 30,000km's.

Its now got to the point where its spinning one wheel in a straight line, it does this in second also.

So yer.. no traction for me. Sucks.

I've seen quite good results from shimming diff's.

Providing they are treated right and not consistently drifted they are fine and last quite a while. Well worth the $300 odd anyway.

He probably didn't want to shimm it. :)

Thommo - you said you took yours to Unique - how much did they charge you to get the diff+gearbox oil changed?

I'm looking at giving my car a major service - and reading this looks like my diff's on the way out as well, don't push it too hard but when I do tyre's light up on the right side, in the wet they just spin the whole way up the street - although i'm not sure if this is just 1 wheel (right) or both.. if it's both it's fine.. if it's 1 it's not..

Hey mate,

it was $260 - not the cheapest I guess (oils - 10% discount, plus one hour labour), but I don't have the tools / energy to know how to do it :)

Damn 1.5 way LSDs are expensive, i'll just deal with not being able to do dumb stuff in first gear for the moment I think :)

Cheers,

Tommo.

in my r33, when i am going below 15km/h around a tight (90 degree) corner the inside wheel spins easily

but when i am pointed straight ahead, in first gear both wheels start spinning and continue spinning at the same time for sure even on the spot

Thats pretty much what a healthy standard LSD does....they are limited slip but they are pretty loose from the factory so that they don't skip around like a nice tight mechanical diff would.
