Hey guys (and girls), just breaking my posting virginity for this site.

Quick intro, I'm a modding newbie who'd probably blow the engine up just by looking at it. Nuf said.

I'm going through this site and getting what info i can, but haven't found much on stroker kits. Basically, I've seen a few around that can take the RB26 up to 2800, for the small price of my balls, so to speak ($9000+) Are they worth it?? The sites I've seen them on say things like "Considerable increase in torque and power", and more commonly "You don't REALLY need two of them, and stroker kits are cool". So i was hoping someone who's done it, or knows someone that knows someone who's heard of someone that's done it could give me some honest feedback.

p.s. any advice regarding modding of R33 GTR's welcome.

Hey Craney, welcome to the site.

I don't have any direct experience with RB strokers, but I think most people would tell you to steer clear of strokers unless you've already modded your car significantly.

Extra capacity gives you more low down torque, which is good for any engine, but as you say, the kits are expensive. I think most guys who go for strokers already have everything else sorted out, and they mainly want the extra grunt to spool up big turbos quicker. So my advice would be to go for a turbo(s) back exhaust, pod(s) or high flow panel filter, possibly new turbo(s) and PowerFC/retune. Also look at cams. Theres about $5-6000 or so gone, and you'll get much more out of those mods than a stroker kit.

If you are still keen, post up as much info about your car as you can, including all modification etc, so the people with more experience on the topic than me can give you a more detailed/informative response.

another good way, would be to grab yourself a RB30 3.0l block, and get some forgies for it, better rods (your GTR rods should do) and some big end bearings etc and adapt it to your RB26 head. There are tutorials all over this site on adapting a 3.0l block to a RB26, you'll find with the right parts, its easy to do.

Theres 3.0l, the only thing you'll sacrifice is a little bit of revs, but the torque will make up for it.

you can make huge HP with the 2.6ltr anyhow.

There isnt a great need to go bigger if your using the car as a streeter

You can still make 330awkw with a stock motor. Slap some pistons and rods dow there and over 400 everyday.

The kits from japan are mega $$$$ indeed.

yeah, for a street car with reasonable sized turbos your money is better spent on something other than increasing capacity.

GTRs make pretty decent power with the stock equipment. personally the first places I'd be spending money is:

brakes (good rotors, good pads, good fluid, braided lines, master cylinder stopper)

suspension (decent dampers and springs, replace worn bushes, get a decent allignment)

Engine cooling (oil cooler - very good idea)

then do the basic upgrades:

3inch or bigger exhaust (if you have the money do the front pipes and dump pipes too)

boost controller (wind it up to just under 1 bar)

Some cams or cam gears (or both)

Power FC

have all this tuned and you should have between 220 to 250rwkw depending on the tune and dyno etc. You will find it to be quite a quick street car. if that's not enough then go for:

better FMIC

Hard pipe kit

small low mount turbos (HKS GT-SS, or HKS 2530, or HKS GT-RS or their garret equivelant)

do the dumps and fronts if you didn't before

put in a decent clutch

buy some decent tyres

now you should have around 300kw atw. car will be capable of high 11 second quarters and be VERY fast. only thing really quicker on the road will be another GTR with the same mods.... Cost about $10-$15K in mods all up but if that's what you're after then it will be worth it.

Thanks for the feedback. 10-15k doesn't sound so bad, since I was willing to spend up to 30k over the next 2-3 years (decent job, few expenses). At least I got a starting point.

Got another question or two though.

With the exhaust, I'm happy to do 3" or more all the way through, but any advice on how to keep the noise down a bit?? The cops my way pull you up for anything when you're in an import. And has anyone tried dual exhausts with the skylines (just curious, i think it'd look pretty wicked).

Also, once i get started is there anything I should look out for when i get the extra power. I just don't wanna be driving it around after i put some new turbos in it and something snaps under pressure.

how much power could the rb26 crank and block hold anyway by the way? (please dont flame me for my ignorance im not a piston lover yet)

and how long do you think an rb26 with say cams and valve springs and just hi flowed turbos would last for generally since rb26's are expensive to rebuild

all this will be done with whatever supporting modifications ie injectors,ecu,fuel pump etc
