Steps to build the ultimate SS Killer in a Ford 6

WITHOUT forced induction.

Okay, heres the deal.

A few months ago I bought a '95 Ford Falcon Futura w/ 5 speed manual.

Its still in mint condition and goes very hard for what it is.

The mods I've done so far:

- Pacemaker extractors, high flow cat, true dual 2.5" exhaust to a single 3" tip

- K&N panel air filter

- Tickford air snorkel

- Super glow XR6 NGK spark plugs

Its already fast but I still cant beat the newer V8's and I'm determined to do it.

I never would've considered to do something like this car up, but after hanging around alot of skyline owners lately I've quickly become an inline 6 lover.

I'm not sure how much power I currently make at the rear wheels but so far I've walked off a VN SS commodore to 80 and kept up with an R32 GTST who couldn't pull away from me.

Mods I'm considering next:

- XR6 valve springs

- K&N Pod filter

- AU throttlebody intake piping

- Unichip

- Large Crow camshaft

- 9" LSD

- Racing clutch

I know this sounds like I stumbled on the wrong forum speaking all this Ford talk but I like the import mod community and thought you guys might be able to help me out on what I could do to beef up my ride without going to turbo or supercharger.

The other day I raced a VT commodore LS1 SS and kept up to about 60 then he mushed me.

I just want to be able to beat one and say NA inline 6 > V8 hehe.

Nice ride mate.

Your specific questions in regards to what you need to do to make your car fast would be best answered in the ford forum as theres a whole heap of people who have gone through what you want to. I appreciate why you want to ask the guys here though.

but anyway throw in either a wade reground cam or a jim mock motorsport cam

have a look at www.jimmockmotorsport.com possibly .au on the end of that but i dont think so

jim mock has a range of dev kits which include some head work and so forth

mabe a 3.23 or 3.45lsd out of a fairmont or xr aswell

also on the fordmods forum you should be able to find ITS performance they would be able to help you out aswell

well you already have a fairly big displacement, its 4.0 dohc yeah?

check out what ecu options you have, in terms of piggyback or full change

capa.com.au may have some stuff to help

the engine is fairly good and beefy, 4litre is stacks just need to extend the fuel injection system out a little, ecu should help do that or even piggy back

You will need a lot more than those mods mate. My old VN 5spd used to beet ED to AU XR6's and I only had a few mods but a gen3 would have flogged me.

Transplant a BA engine into it and start from there nizpro have a few kits for the new BA engine would be a beast then and give the gen3's a run for there money.

I dont have THAT much money to engine swap.

My car took down a stock VN SS the other week, mind you mine isnt far from stock either.

220kW at the flywheel would probably be sufficient enough for me I think to take down most Gen III's as my car has a 200kg less weight advantage.

To keep the budget down you will need to do allot of the work yourself (like all of it).

I dont wanta pay on your idea as your looking for help so ill help.

(Personally i wouldnt bother and id go to forced induction straight away... but)

OK.

Strip the head and send it in for a blueprint. Reset the valve springs with heavy duty springs (XR springs are no different you know (i used to work for ford))... I would spend all the money on ecu and head work. You will be best of going with a whole new ecu (this will cost big money due to tuning cost)... But if you need it to be N/a for the challange ro insurance reasons then i will continue.

Larger injectors ie. from an xr6t and a custom cold air intake with basic k&n pod. New throttle body for the plenium. Infact id replace that crapy standard plenium with an after market jobbie. Then use a largish 100mm+ throttle body. Time to get another drink.... one sec.....OK im back...

My neighbour has an AuIII XR8 and we just finished the capa charger and ecu install. It was a pain in the asre even with my 4 years with ford this was like re-inventing the wheel so if i get side tracked again its cause im a little un-sure... :confused:

Anyway... If its auto then have it serviced to change up later and harder (any auto shop can help with this) If its manual with i think you said it was then go to a brass button clutch (custom jobbie again). The button clutch is the most effecient clutch there is around thats why most rotaries us it. Unfortunatlly its a bastard to hill start and get heavy on the leg.... Anyway also look at you diff ratio's. One of the cheapest way to increase 0-100 time is to tinker with the final drive. You will lose a chunk of top speed but who cares.... It how fast you get to the speed limit that matters....

So cost is up to you but id start with the diff and clutch for safety reasons....

If you were me id sell it and buy something less common.... Like an R33... LOL

No really pick up a HR31 thats where i started.... their worth 10g's in good condition in turbo format.... Standard all you need is a bleed valve ($30-100) and your beating most cars again.....

kool kool just looking around this site i came across this thread and had to post.

to start from the top your futura 5 speed would be lucky to do a 15.5 pass down the qtr with those mods, and you would have around the 165-170HP @ the wheels depending. Are your extractors the street spec or comp (tuned length?) the street will gain you advantages off the line to mid range performance the comp's will gain mid range/topend but loose out bottomend (better for the I6 as it has a nice fat torque curve from 2800rpm onwards.)

next on your list should be porting/polishing they can flow upwards of 350HP thru the heads with ease depends how much you want to spend though, a decent cam would also be and advantage but mild/avg as the ECU will go to limp home mode if your lift/duration is too large.

atm i have an NL (EL) fairlane that has the following mods:-

Pacemaker tuned length extractors

upgraded Cat

Lukey Cat back system 1 muffler.

HP4 chiptorque chip (reprogramable)

head port/polish flows 330HP up from 260HP std.

Billit custom grind cam (medium lift/duration) *sorry forget exact specs

Vernier cam gear (atm still set with std settings)

standard auto, 1820kg kerb weight, 3.08 Open center diff [email protected] willowbank raceway. and 192RWHP or 143RWKW.

atm im doing a 3.9LSD and auto rebuild in the hope of smashing into the 14's as its the launch that is keeping me in the 15's, with 94MPH on board its defentaly 14 sec teritory just getting a bulk weight off the line and no real HP till 3000rpm makes it hard with crappy HWY diff gears.

without a dyno chart, its a little hard to compare..

Whilst you can see you beat this and beat that, its all just heresay until you have something to back it up, be it a timeslip or a dyno chart to indicate how it might fair against other cars.

anything stopping you from using NOS???

sounds stilly i know, but its cheap, easy to install and the power is there when you need it and not chewing through fuel when you don't need all the extra HP :D

just a thought.

P.S. there is the whole street legality thing, but i guess if you car isa sleeperand you don't attract too much attention, you should be able to pull it off.

yea np mate :)

the last thing you need is a 9" diff with out 500+HP @ the rear there is NO need for one as they rob a shitload of power from an alreay starving driveline, best bet is to get your diff rebuilt with 3.9 diff gears as they suit the ratios perfectly in the T5 box wont give you any more HP but will defentlay bring your 1/4 times down.

a mate of mine with an EB XR6 mild cam/3.9's/extractors/exhaust runs [email protected]. not bad out of something that is otherwise stock.... yes it is proven and the car atm is now copping some other 'upgrades' :P:P hehe
