hey

EDIT: please refer to the 5th post

well my r32 gtr was running fine but the boost was a little high.

so i checked for a leak from a wastegate actuator

i found a pipe that looked a litte old so i took it off and replaced it.

i also cleaned the AFM's with electric contact cleaner while they were off. i also reset computer.

now when i hit boost it goes to 5 psi then it make a loud noise, sounds like lots of air coming out from somewhere. then the boost quickly drops to 3 psi as it makes the nooise.

i have checked all pipes and cant see a leak, i also replaced a clamp to make sure.

now all i did was replace a little pipe from the rear wastegate actuator.

do i have to suck out any air that are in these lines or anything???

i cant see why it would be doing this.. also its seems to backfire a bit more

does it run ok still and only gets the 3psi or does it kind of shudder at 3 psi and not want to go past boost??? doesnt sound like a turbo more like a leak or some think that only cums of when its under presure,so u wont be able to see it when its not on boost. when a turbo goes theres alot of smoke and no boost, well thats what i got. hope this helps a lil bit, at least it shouldnt be the turbo it self.

Pfft alot of smoke....

Maybe normally, but I can tell you the turbos on my GTR were both fecked and there was no smoke.

In saying that, if you can hear the noise of air, its gotta be a leak somewhere. When mine were blown, it was just like they weren't there, no noise, nothin' Compressor wheel just wasn't there on one... half there on the other.

ok.

some more bad news!

i found the problem of the above... a pipe had come off.. i put it back on and thought it would go fine..

i went for a test drive.. i took off in 1st. i only reved to about 1500rpm to 2000rpm, because the motor was still a little cold..

put in 2nd.. then 3rd.. didnt rev over 2000rpm....

then while in 3rd the revs started to drop.. .. i put the clutch in and tried to rev it.. (the clutch was heavier then normal) the car then cut out.. i pulled over and tried to start but the engine didnt kick over..

all the belts moved when trying to start but it didnt turn over...

in all this i probably hit a MAX of 1 or 2 psi.

PLEASE HELP

hahaha i ended up wif white smoke every where. oh well every ones cars are different.

Yeah, probably depends on def of blow. exhaust wheel coming off probably doesn't make smoke.

So twas leaky pipe hey... car dying slowly... did it feel like u ran out of fuel. If you haven't run out or fuel, what about fuel not being supplied for some reason?

i experienced the same as you; with the engine revs dropping and then the car cuting out. Make sure there is no air leaking around the AFM's and the pipes leading to them from the turbos. Its is crucial that you seal any leakage of air.

All the best.

When you turn on the ignition do you get that whine from the fuel pump? it is definately getting fuel?

If so when you crank it does it try to start and splutter or does the starter motor just kick over and thats it?

yes i hear the whining noise... but i thought its the attessa system pumping the fluid?... also this noise only goes for about 1 second when usually it goes for about 4 seconds

when i crank it, it doesnt try to start or anything, its just the starter motor that kicks over

im assuming you engine starts but it just splutters and cuts out tho? mine doesnt even try to start

After three failed attempts to start the engine the battery shit itself. After charging the battery and sealing the air leaks I had it started and ran much smoother. Also, did your car run a little rough b4 this problem. Did it pull back at times as if it didn't want to go?

ok here is the long story of what happened..

i herd a ticking noise when coming on boost.. it then started to sound a little like a truck... i was 99% sure that i have just done a turbo gasket or something..

so i went to change it.. i was unable to take off the zaust manifold with my tools.. so put it all back togethor.. then for some reason it was running unlimited boost... it went to 16psi when it should be 14ish... so i didnt boost it after that..

i when to check for pipes from wastegate actuator for leaks.. i saw that a pipe was old and cracked.. i replaced it with a new one... put all back togethor...

went for drive and an intercooler pipe came off.... (i drove for about 15 mins with a loose pipe as i didnt know it was loose.. it was just dropping at 5 psi (as i said right at the start of this thread) it didnt show any weird signs apart from the loss of boost

i replaced a hose clamp with a new one, put the pipe back on.. and then after that is when it died on me

hope this info helps

Sounds to me like youve got a major vacuum leak somewhere... did you notice what the vacuum was before it died? Its hard to explain, but when starting the car does it sound like it wants to start? Or does it sound like its struggling on a cylinder (e.g crank-crank-crank-choof-crank-crank -- really bad way to explain it, but the cylinder that goes choof sounds extremely sick compared to the rest). If so I'd go and get a compression and leak down test as it sounds like there might be some internal damage.

When I blew one of my turbos the car just wouldnt boost and when you tried to bring it onto boost, just pissed out smoke from the exhaust.

i would say you have done some pretty major damage mate. you had inadvertantly left off the pipe going to the wastegate actuator(s) this meant the car was running unlimited boost (probably much more than 16psi btw). this is why the intercooler hose blew off, i would guess that whilst running unlimited boost you have damaged the motor. get it to a mechanic mate and find out. if it's not engine damage you will feel much better, if it is at least you will know for sure.

the thing is i didnt leave a wastegate pipe off... and i have no idea why it was running unlimited boost... i hit 16psi about 2-3 times and after that i didnt put my foot down after that until it was fixed

the pipe blew off due to a dodgy clamp, so i bought a new one.. after i clamp it on is when i stuffed up.. and i only hit less then 2 psi for it to come off..

BUT SOME GOOD NEWS!

the car turned over.. it tried to start just before.

i had a look around the fuel filter in the engine bay and i can see a small metal pipe going nowhere... it looks like a rubber pipe has falln off it.

im going to have another look and see whats going on

Do you have stock ECU? What do these ECU's boost cut at? I have run unlimited boost before (old car, just to see), its not THAT hard to control with your right foot. I don't think you would damage your engine before you ripped your turbo exhaust wheel off, especially stock turbos.

    • G'day all, I have drilled and tapped the hole for the relocation of the timing belt tensioner. That was straight forward. I'm unsure if I need to also put another hole for the smaller stud that the spring behind the tensioner catches on (this is how it seems to work in its original spot). Or do you not use the spring behind it and just torque it down? Thanks in advance, I did a search but couldn't find anything related and it doesn't mention it in the rb30det sau guide.
    • Hi All,  just thought I would provide an update as I know smooth (Matt) was on this forum from 2003.    my brother Matthew passed away end of may 2024 at the age of 41 from liver failure. I am not sure how many of his original team krazy friends are still on here or active but thought it reasonable to let the forum know.    if you have any photos or pictures it would be great if you could share them.    it took me a while to work out he was active on here.    thanks so much

    • 😜 hopefully we get this instead of a new R36 GTR due to recent financial problems at Nissan. Nismo to sell a complete kit with RB26 and driveline. All starts making sense (ok maybe not) once the Nissan Leaf's (Leaves?) with stuffed EV motors/batteries hit the market cheap
    • Hi guys , have had allot of time for SAU and has helped me out heaps in the past so I thought I would give it a go , I have my QM1 white NUR for sale 1 of 156 examples built by Nissan. Serious personal messages please if interested and details will be provided , asking 500k
