ok so ive installed a HKS type 1 timer I have installed it but there is a problem.

the timer functions, when I turn the ignition off the timer starts counting down, but the car turns off instantly.

I dont think my install is suspect as it was basically plug and play with my old timer.

Im thinkings it may be a fault in the unit, as it is second hand..

anyone got any ideas? :P

Check that the handbrake wire is connected properly. Thats what happens if i put my handbrake down whilst counting down. I think its a brown wire that joins up to the handbreak dash light switch wire...

hey

i had a similar problem

i have a HKS timer too. i tried connecting the handbrake wire straight to an earth and it worked...

try that. to at least full eliminate that as the problem..

sorry for not being much help. just a suggestion :P

Cheers

yeah im going round to a mates to try his type 0, so ill see if my unit is faulty.

Ive pretty much already eliminated the handbreak wire as a problem as with the handbreak on the timer counts down. just doesnt keep the car running, and with it off the timer just turns off.

when i installed my type one into my old gtst i had a similar problem,

and that was because the wires i used, seem to be too far away from actual ignition? :S

basically i used the ignition, constant power etc from behind stereo. either way, no workies. but when hooked up directly to ignition it worked :)

also, when i took it out and put it into my gtr, i couldnt remember which wires were which(seperate time from removal to re install), it turned out that the english instructions for ig power that i had(hks usa install guide), was wrong way around, but when i turned off car, it would turn off and timer would go off. so it might not be that either :S

its pretty close to the ignition, right under the steering column,

in the hks manual it says:

red - 12 volt constant

green - 12 volt ingnition

blue - 12 volt accessory

thats how I wired them up.

I dont think I have ign and acc mixed up because if they were, my accessory would stay on till the timer timed out.

one other weird thing I have noticed is the speed display is incorrect, ie at 50k/h its reading 25. so the timer thinks im going slower than I am, and thinking I am reving fairly high for my speed, and the auto timer goes up very quickly, not sure if its related but it may be another indication of a faulty or damaged unit.

to calibrate the speed you need to get it into speed mode (use the top L/H button until it shows kph), and then press the Bottom-R/H Button which will put it into calibration mode (40kph will be flashing at this point). Bring the car up to 40kph, and press the bottom R/H Button again, and the speed is calibrated.

Calibrating the tach function is the same process but in the tach screen (obviously :D). press the Bottom R/H button and 2000rpm will flash. Rev the engine and hold the revs at 2000rpm, then press the Bottom R/H button again.

But from the sounds of it with the engine cutting out while the timer counts, something else may be wrong :O

    • Welcome!  We're not all grumpy.
    • Welcome. We're all grumpy old men (and a few grumpy old women) who are slowly coming to hate these cars. Any of the newer owners who have joined in the last few years are rapidly catching up with us as they realise they have bought a basket case and that parts are getting difficult to find. Just be realistic about your goals. You'll need a fat stack of cash to buy an R34 GTR, and you'd be far better off using that to buy absolutely anything else (ie, shares, a house, scratchy tickets) unless that fat stack of cash is only ~10% of the actual fat stack of cash that you have. You'll never want to drive an R34 GTR on the street if you have fear of it getting destroyed. That's more or less true of the 33s and 32s also. Most of the RWD cars have been drifted backwards into power poles. No-one knows what they are worth these days because they are not changing hands. My car has notionally been down to <$10k value at some point and was probably sellable for $40-$50k in the height of COVID stupidity, but I have no idea what it's really worth now. It's irreplaceable anyway, because... where would I find one to replace it? Being realistic means either paying a lot of cash for a really really clean example that you will only drive on sunny Sundays, or buying one to daily that you will not want to be really really clean, for the same fears of destruction that applies to the GTR. I daily mine and some people think I'm crazy. But....to me it's just a car that I bought last century with the express purpose of driving it as my daily. The silliness that has happened since doesn't affect my original purpose. I have well and truly amortised the initial purchase cost and most (probably all) of the subsequent modification costs. But I don't think I could go out and buy one now to daily.

    • Hey everyone! I'm quite young and I don't have enough to get a car right now but I love Nissan Skylines (Specifically the r34 GT-R. I'm so original I know.) and I would love to buy one in the future. I have no background knowledge, only an interest in cars, but I'd love to learn how they work so I can mod in the future. I've done some basic research on what model of Skyline I would start with and what mods to get started with are but nothing else. I'm here to learn! Hope you all have a great day
