Hi everyone,

I just bought a SBC ID3 and am about to attempt installing myself into my R33.

Just wondering if anyone here has installed their SBC ID3 themselves or know the best position to install the solenoid. It says to install within three feet of the turbo but then says the shorter the hoses the better. What is the optimum position for the solenoid??

Was thinking of mounting on the side of the strut tower but would that be too close from a heat point of view?Is it safe to drill holes in the strut tower to mount?

Also where did u all connect your vacuum lines? I have a boost gauge in the car so is it ok just to tee into that hose? I want the best performance from my EBC so would it be better to do it another way? Wheres the best place to mount the Control Unit?? I figure somewhere close to the vacuum hose? Would it be good to have it right next to where I connect the vacuum hose so I could have only a couple of inches of hose or is this too little? How do u mount it literally with the double sided tape included??

Any help or tips for installing would also be appreciated. I want to install for performance but any tips for hiding parts etc would also be great. I suppose the solenoid has to be in the open.

Thanks everyone all replies will be greatly appreciated.

I have just installed one of these into my R33.

I mounted the solenoid unit down next to the air box(outer side) and ran the hoses under it so they weren't noticable.

I cut the wires joining the control unit to the solenoid unit cos what they give you is way too long and it also makes it easier to get it through the firewall.I later rejoined these with connectors and coverd them with black heat shrink tubing for that stock look. i ran these along the factory harness and pokes them through the firewall where all the wires for the computer go.

I mounted the control unit on the bottom of the heater box or something(white plastic bit between the glove box and centre consol under the dash.) this could go anywhere you want but i had the restriction of running an extra line for the pressure pick up which was too short to go anywhere else. You should be able to tuck it up behind the dash a bit better than me.

Running off the boost guage line should be fine, just make sure the joins are tight.

I'll go out and take some picks for you in a sec. Everything looks standard in the engine bay, appart fron about 50mm of bright blue silicon hose but if you really wanted to hide it you could replace this with black hoseing or something

Here are some pics, The messy wireing near the control unit is about to be tidied up as i still have to shorten it by another 400mm.

I made up the bracket holds the display. it is simply squashed between the dash and the steering column. If i get pulled over all i have to do is drop the steering column down and shove it up under the dash.

I also made up a bracket so i could use an existing hole to mount the solenoid unit. Basically it is a flat piece of 6mm plate with three holes in it. One countersunk hole to suit a M6 socket head countersunk screw in the centre, to attach it to the car body, and one hole tapped M6 either side to attach the unit with socket head cap screws. You could just use one of the supplied bolts in the existing hole and drill another for the other one.

I have also attached an English manual if you need it

Blitz_SBC_i_D_manual.pdf

I got mine from nengun.com

cost around $560 + shipping

I got the boost controller and a Tomei exh campully for $848 shipped.

In australia you could be looking at anywhere between $900 and $1500 for the boost controller alone

    • It is possibly 55 degrees for the Nismo version. I had a look through the manual and the stocker has a breakaway torque of 2.5 to 3.5kgm. Supposedly the Nismo LSD goes down to 5kgm when worn in but it is pretty grabby even with very little throttle. Worse when cold. So I guess you have three things. 1. Shims. 2 Friction plates 3. Cams Would think shims would be the easiest but Ive no clue how many tenths of a mm shim thickness change equals how many kgm torque. Also not sure if the Nismo friction plates are similar/different to stock or if they are the most of the source of the diff being angry. Think I can write off the Nismo rebuild kit for the standard diff as not being what I want.
    • Yeah, it was a bit of confusion with me, I rang and asked if they had a boot for a soft top, and then the paint shop when they rang and were asked if it had a hard top on it, which it does, just not a PRHT....LOL Meh, whilst frustrating for all concerned it isn't a war stopper and should be a thing of the past in a week or two In other N/A related news, car is booked in at the end of the month for the cams, springs, retainers, harmonic balancer and retune  I might even pull the lazy arse card and get them to do a full service on it whilst it is there
    • Factory LSD is supposedly a 2 way with a very conservative cam. If you've already tried adding friction modifier to the diff oil and it still locks up too much for your liking you might want to adjust the ramp rate on the cam to be more like OEM instead of reducing initial torque even further. People claim the 8 kgf-m disc kit for the OEM LSD is still very streetable but I've never been able to compare everything side by side on my own.
    • Oh man, at least it sounds they've accepted they stuffed up and not put it back on you...could see some confusion if they asked if it had a hardtop or not, and you've answered truthfully but maybe not answering their real question which is what roof did it have from the factory! Glad your keeping it N/A 2.5
    • Nah, I much prefer colour matched Talking about colour matching stuff, the new/used boot lid turned up, all painted up perfectly......aaaannnndddd, it's for a power retractable hard top, not a soft top.....LOL They are now sending a boot to fit a soft top.....,  whilst frustrating, life is like that sometimes, sometimes you just need to dodge, duck, dip, dive and, ummm, dodge.
