Hey guys and girls

its been a while since I posted here. Just bought myself a gorgeous black R34 GTT. I put in a K&N rectangular air filter and took off the induction plastic cover so the car makes very loud induction noise (and so it does and I'm lovin it), however I am just wondering if this is a safe thing to do and will it do any damage to the engine? the engine is a NEO 6 and triptronic transmission.

Do u mean the snorkel? If so, no it won't damage the engine. U just suck in worm air from the engine bay. Might loose a bit of power.

The cover holds the filter in place so it could possibly fall off.

What i did as an experiment was to get a second airbox lid and cut the whole top of it off so that only the edges that clip on to the bottom section of the airbox remain. This holds the air filter securely in place.

Blitz make a metal frame to replace the airbox lid which does the same job they call it the blitz induction cover.

so basically the only problem with doing this is that the filter may pop out of its nesting?

Mate told me to simply get a couple of clamps and that'll do the job or even glue it, tho thats obviously not as practical lol

I was going to get a full blown pod air filter and clamps and BOV but i'm more satisfied with this sound so as long as its no problem for the engine then i'm more then happy to keep it this way...

2. The filter might just jump out, drop onto hot piping, melt cause fire. Fir is bad.

I can't think of any more right now, but dude, seriously, get a pod and heat shield if you are keen on the sound.

Yea seems like hot air is bad but as long as it doesnt cause harm to the engine then who cares if i lose a bit of power? I'm just scared that its bad for the engine thats all... if so then tell me concretely whether it is bad or not so I know.

Also, i washed a KN filter with some blue filter cleaner and i ued a dryer to dry it which is a bad thing stated by K&N website. When you aplply to Oil to the filter, should it dry first or its fine to have it all oily as thath makes more sense....??

I said in a previous post that it is not a good idea to have the air filter not secured. But there must be some merit in my approach of removing the top of the airbox completly so that only the frame that holds the airbox in place remains.

Considering Blitz manufacture something that has exactly the same effect.

The trouble with the standard airbox lid is that the inlet from the "snorkel" is very small, opening up the cover lets air come through the snorkel as per usual as well as any additional airflow into the engine bay.

It it will add a few Kw's on the dyno but I would say that this could be offset by increased heat soak in on road driving conditions.

Just remove the material padding from inside the induction box, this will make it sound a bit louder.

Kepp the lid on though.  BAD for car without the lid.

i asked this question over a yr ago,, but no one had an answer back then,,

so ya,,, will removing the padding under the lid really affect anything?,, Nissan told me it was there to absorb moisture from the rain/water that gets sucked in by the snorkel.

i also thought if i removed it,, there would be more volume above the filter, but then thought there will be more air turbulence,, maybe the padding is also there the reduce the air turbulance before going through the filter,,

so anyone who has removed the padding,, noticed any difference, besides increased induction noise???

Ok so far I've recieved mixed opinions on this matter. Most seem to think its a bad thing to leave the snorkel off for hot air comes into engine instead of cold, hotter ait makes turbo heat up faster etc so it seems its not the best idea. I put the snorkel back on.

Now, how can I achieve a really noisy WHOOSH sound? blow off valve? pod filter? wat are my options to do this properly and still have the nice suction noise?

Put a pod filter on it, with plastic piping running from a gap in your front bar to the filter. its called cold air intake. or do what blinky said. You'll get a gtreat induction noise, and if the CAI is attached anfd located properly you won't be sucking in hot air.

A blowoff valve is a slightly dfferent noise, and goes off at a different time, e.g when you put your foot on the clutch or back off the accelerator, whereas the filter will only suck when you are accelerating or revving the car.

    • Haha im flattered! Although my poor boat is collecting dust in the garage, as it hasn’t been driven in like 6 months. I forgot the to put the trickle charger on too, so the battery is likely toast now.. I have the frenchys kit. It is fantastic. My only gripe was that the hard lines from the firewall needed some tweaking, however, this was mainly due to my specific turbo and dump combo. The weight and size packaging is much nicer too. I think I have some pics on my build thread somewhere.. my justification for the kit was more “why not” I had gone to the trouble to modernise just about every other part of the car..
    • Actually, ethanol has probably never been cheaper, on a tax free basis, than petrol. With fuel excise being what it is, and only being levied on the hydocarbon component, not the ethanol component, and ethanol for non-drinking purposes not being subject to liquor excise - E85 was cheaper, but not because the combustible liquid itself was particularly cheaper.
    • Maybe? If changing the cat to a higher flowing cat, caused the turbo to spool more quickly, and those areas of the map had not been tuned for the boost level it is now seeing, then yes you would need a re-tune. How dangerous it is running without the updated tune would depend on how far out the tune is with the now higher boost levels, how the engine protection has been setup, is the ECU compensating with a wideband sensor, is the boost control closed loop blah blah million other things... But yeah having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if changing out the cat for a high flow, in say a full 3" exhaust, made no noticeable difference at all.
