I'm not convinced with peoples answers about estimation of speed. An estimation of speed is a very inacurate way to be booked because there is such a thing called misjudgement, and if you do not have a radar or speed camera or speedo (basically anything that can calculate or compare your speed) then it would not be bookable as the police are subject to error!

I've had an experience where i just got my license and was in my car with 2 mates doing about 110km in a long straight suburban st, a cop pulls out of a st and heads the other way to me, i slowed down as soon as i saw the cop, but from their judgement they could tell i was speeding and u-turned and chased me but by the time they had i was at speed limit again, they pulled me over and just gave me a stern warning that if they hear any reports of my car, that i'd be in real trouble, but could not book me as they did not know my speed.

Yet on the other hand i believe they can use some descrepency, as another time i got caught street racing, but let me off on a speeding fine. They told me that they assumed i was doing over 100km as they had to do 130km to catch up to me. I can't remember if i got booked for 110 or just 100, but they were nice and let me off on less serious charges due to some circumstances.

So my belief is that they can use their judgement but only when they have something to go off (for example the cop went off what speed they had to do to catch me). But as for a police car going the opposite way, they would not beable to determine your speed at just watching you go past.

So all in all i think it comes down to the circumstance in how the cop catches you speeding whether they were able to go off something, coz if they can't then they can't do shit!

basically, a cop is trained to estimate the speed of another car. thats why they're allowed to do it. they might not do it regularly, but they are allowed too.

They are. Im telling you thats the LAW! Its not an answer. Its how it is.

The officers "judgement" after a number of years on the job is deemed by the court to be reasonable and accurate.

Too an extent. This is where i could waffle on for 15pages about it all.

Simply if the officer says you did 110... you can talk it back to around 100 or so, maybe a bit more with a good lawyer.

Its human estimation after all but its not invalid because of that reason.

They way the estimation is done both on foot and in cars, is they look at point A, and then point B.

If it takes you "X" amount of seconds to get from A-->B then all they need to know. Only a rough estimation of the distance id needed (at a later stage if need be more accurate, its irrelevant until a contest)

If by car they can also refer to thier own speedo.

Wether coming at you or going away or following. Point A and point B as a captain obvious statement, doesnt change

At lower speeds just thier own estimation is good enough. And in a 50 zone even i can tell if someone if doing 60/70 for gods sake. Its not half obvious and the courts know this. These cases go through there everyday.

Im not a law expert, but when it comes to speeding cases and "estimation" ive been there, done that...

and im going there again.

The police indeed can make very outlandish estimations. Then its upto you to prove that it wasnt possible.

The Defendant always get shafted. Its not really innocent until proven guitly.

Its more the mood and attitude of the judge on any given day, which stinks and makes the legal system quite innacruate in my eyes and i have little faith that a fair decision will ever be handed out unless you have a gauranteed way of getting out of it.

people here have said that cops can tell a judge in court you were speeding just by the naked eye. Obviously if you are flogging it down the road your in the shit and so you should be. My argument is that if your doing 75 in a 60 and the cop wants to be a prick but has no factual evidence, I would say turn it up mate, since when have you ever heard a cop say i can judge speed by looking for a few seconds. I have a mate going through the acadamy at the moment and he said nothing about going to calder park and watching cars drive past at various speeds to become a human speed detector. BS! keep pissing in my left pocket...

If you ask a member of the police force to show you the radar reading he/she must, but what if like what happend to my mate, he/she said he/she cleared it???

They had a segment on this very topic on ACA (ch.9) a few months ago. Basically it was determined that yes obviously you can fight a discretion against you in court but if you take legal aid with you, you just wasted your time.

As with every suituation in courts all around the world, if you got the money you've got a bloody good chance of getting of with any crime/infringement.

Easy solution, every one here become a cop, once in the brother/sisterhood you can do what you like... :P

you're right about the showing the reading...if you ask, they must show you...its just that not many people choose to question them

if they said they cleared it, then you can contest it.

as for the judging speeds, you're mate is in the academy...so he isn't a cop just yet. as has been said so many times in this thread, by people that know the fact, a police officer is considered to be in a position that he or she CAN judge the speed of a vehicle. tell them its BS, and see how leanient they are with you :P

In NSW:

They are allowed to use their speedo (which are calibrated) to estimate your speed but have to follow you for a minimum of 200 metres to do so.

Where did you pull 200m from?

Sorry to single you out - the majority of people who answered to this thread don't know what they're talkin bout. Sorry but yeah.. Nismoid on the money. 'cept.. in theory it should be innocent before guilty, but in practical terms you'd usually get f**ked.

its not that inaccurate. Most of these estiamtions occur in low km speed zones where it is quite obvious when someone is speeding.

Also cops won't accuse you for only speeding 10kms over as it's to close to judge. From what I've seen and from talking to a few cops who are friends they generally only use judgements if it's blatantly obvious you were speeding.

Uhmm yeah, cops have always had the power to issue warnings and use their own discretion on certain matters. If you were street racing though I'm surprised you didn't get the book thrown at you. keep it on the track.

    • Hey lads  so im finally putting together my rb30 forged bottom end and ran into an issue. I measured my main bearing clearance with arp main studs torqued to 60 ft-lbs using ACL H series STD size bearings and standard, un-ground crank shaft journals and got an oil clearance reading of about 1.3 thou measuring straight up and down and about 2.8 thou measuring at a 45 degree angle (just above and below the parting line). My machine shop said they measured the main tunnel and it was all within spec (they didnt say the actual measurement) and to go with a standard size bearing, which i have done and the clearance is too tight, I'm guessing because of the extra clamping force from the arp studs distorting the main tunnel. I was wanting to run about 2.5 thou main bearing clearance.  My questions are: 1. could i just use the HX extra 1 thou clearance ACL bearings? that would fix my straight up and down clearance making it about 2.3 thou, but then would the side to side clearance be too big at around 3.8 thou? 2. what actually is the recommended main bearing clearance for measuring near the parting line / side to side. i know its supposed to be bigger as the bearing has some eccentricity built into it but how much more clearance should there be compared to the straight up and down measurement? at the moment there is about 1.5thou difference, is that acceptable or should it be less? 3. If i took the engine block + girdle back to the machine shop and got them to line bore the main tunnel (like i told them to do the first time, but they said it didnt need it) what bearing size would i buy? the STD size bearing shells already slide in fairly easily with no real resistance, some even falling out if i tip the girdle up-side-down. If im taking material out of the main tunnel would i need a bearing with extra material on the back side to make up for it? this is probably confusing af to read so if something doesn't make sense let me know and ill try explaining in a different way. My machine shop doesn't come back from christmas break until mid January, hence why i'm asking these questions here. TIA for any help or info
    • I bought the model back in Japan in Feb. I realised I could never build it, looked around for people who could build it, turns out there's some very skilled people out there that will make copies of 1:1 cars or near enough. I'm not really a photo guy... but people were dragging me in a group chat for the choice of bumper as someone else saw the car before it was finished as they are also a customer of that shop. I took the photo in the above post because I was pretty confident that the lip would work wonders for it. Here's some more in-progress and almost-done pics. It gives a good enough idea as to what the rear looks like!   I have also booked in a track day at the end of January. Lets all hope that is nothing but pure fun and games. If it's not pure fun and games, well, I've already got half an engine spare in the cupboard
    • Well, do ya, punk? Seriously though, let's fu<king go! The colour and kit looks amazing on the car. Do you have any shots from the rear? I don't quite follow how the model came around. You bought the white kit and he modified it to match your car? Looks nuts either way!
    • So my car is finally back from paint! This took an absolutely insane amount of work and should get it's own build thread - but I didn't build it. It was completed by Troy @ https://scalekustoms.com.au/ I originally bought the AOSHIMA URAS Type R kit while I was in Japan, it's supposed to look like this when assembled: Now, I thought that was cool enough until I opened the box with Dismay, as there's no way I could possibly have completed it. The thing is 1/24 and has details down to the steering wheel horn button, which is a 2mm diameter sticker. I originally wondered if someone could make it at all, as is - But then things got a little carried away. It's worth noting that the model does not have an openable bonne, let alone engine bay, OR an openable boot. - Troy has worked wonders with 3D printer and presumably better eyes than I will ever have. My photos suck, so I will post up some of his in-progress ones he sent to me during the way. Unsuprisingly, he is very detailed. A lot of these are out of order. But he: 1) Made a LS engine and an engine bay appear out of thin air 2) Made the bonnet removable 3) Printed the rims I will buy in the future (or any rim you want) 4) Printed and added the wing that is going on 5) Tinted my back windows as this is what my car has IRL (privacy glass) 6) Added a licence plate. 7) Somehow did the interior 8) 3D Printed my actual seats 9) Made the exhaust under the car connect even though this is likely invisible. 10) Created a boot with my fking battery box, power steering reservoir, subwoofer and toolboxes back there. To say it's insane is an understatement. And I f**ked it all up because when I was re-mounting the wing (it broke in transit) I spilled glue everywhere and ripped paint up and Gregged the rear half of the car. Which about makes sense. Also, this arrived on the same day. Quite the change from: I spent 16 hours per day over the next 3 days pre-christmas putting the interior back together, mounting lip, fixing various bodykit problems with window mouldings, etc. and servicing, rebuilding my 370z brakes to go on the car 'soon', messing with heights to check clearances for new wheels, etc. I also had a foray into mounting wiper-mounted washer jets which was an absolute disaster. The bodyshop has welded (and painted) over the stock jet locations for reasons unknown to everybody (i.e they forgot) I also wanted to wire in the oil pressure sensor on Christmas Eve which was a BAD IDEA. You do not know terror like pulling your ECU apart, pinning in half-fitting pins that aren't the right ones, but trying anyway because it's Christmas eve, putting your ECU back together and having a no-start condition with a fuel pump not priming. Then you undo all your work and the fuel pump still doesn't prime. So after all that terror and horror and pain and tedious disassembly, the issue was the relay in the boot which seems to have died/stuck when I was turning the car off and on about 700 times testing shitty washer jets. I also re-wired the fuel pump power plug which fell apart in my hands. I am very happy I had 3 extra pre-made ones from a few posts/last Christmas's breakdown. https://bluewireautomotive.com/products/10-x-pcm-ecm-ecu-terminals I have put an order for these in, so I can actually add the pins to the ECU properly. The commodore ECU does not have the pins for Oil Pressure via ODB2. However the ECU can support it if you create the pins and wire them in. So for round two, and somehow attempting to route that into the engine bay through my impossible engine bay grommet is a fight for another day. It's 40C in Melbourne tomorrow, I am half tempted to drive the car with the aircon on to deliver presents to my partner's family and see if it helps with the overheating-on-40C-days-in-traffic-with-aircon-on-only issue that the vents were intended to solve. Do I feel lucky?
    • Yes, while being... strictly unnecessary. Tuning is a bit like quantum physics. You don't need to understand what Schroedinger's equation actually means. You just need to run the computation and accept the answers. With tuning, you just push page up/down until the exhaust tells you that you've got the fuel right. The VE can stay hidden behind the curtain like the Wizard of Oz and you'll never need to know what he looked like.
