Have you considered a ceramic coating?

It is shiny, (not like chrome though) and stops a bit of heatsoak from under bonnet temps.

well i called some "electroplating" place.

they said they dont chrome alloy

i decided to go back to polishing it anyway

damn.. didn't realise they were alloy. Guess i am used to the old show cars where they do all the bumpers, etc. But thats not alloy.

they should be able to polish up the metal, even if they can't plate it.. but maybe that doesn't work with the allow covers of GTR's either?

edit: actually.. i've just been having a bit of a look at the whole process and the different metals, etc - you may also want to try and find a place that does "electropolishing".. apparently that can be done to many alloys to get a mirror finish. You will get a better result that doing it by hand.

or just look up "metal polishing" in yellowpages

Can you have wheels repaired? My wheels are a 2-piece - the main rim is spun alloy and the centre is painted. The rim is fairly pitted and I was hoping you can have it repaired and painted. I understand that it cannot be spun again to restore the finish. Not fussed, just keen to have them looking a little tidier.

Any advice appreciated!

(And apologies for the hijack Dru)

Its basically the reverse process of electroplating..

From what I gather, they place the item in a chemical bath, and place a DC voltage source in there (anode at one end, cathode at another).. basically then any impurities are removed from the surface of the metal by an electrochemical reaction.. resulting in a smoother surface, which gives the shine.. But I am still not 100% so best to read up yourself ..

There is a bit of info out there if you try google.. a couple of sites mentioned it could be done to some alloys, whereas electroplating really only works on base metals (or possibly others if you coat them in a thin layer of the correct material)

when you say they can repair it and finshin it up on a lathe is called Hard Chroming what it is is like say u have a coke can and u put a chip out 1 side just say you put 10 thou of hard chrome around the can and then work it on a lathe back to its original size my old man duz that stuff but i am told its exspensive compared to job size.

alloy canot be electroplated i dont think cause the piece has to let electricity go through it to be plated i dont think allot is a very good conductor but i guess theres ways to do it if they can do plastic but it might not be worth it to them as it might contaminate there dipping bins.

best thing i reckn is mate get it polished up it will look a treat.

chrome paint is really more just silver.. nothing compares to a proper powdercoat, , machine polish, anodising, or electroplating (different processes are applicable to different types of metals)

If you want a show quality finish.. can paint doesn't really cut it for most purposes.

i rang up a place in dande(vic) called vinny's and i want to get some of my interior stuff done in chrome and he said 100-200 hundred for the facial around the radio and gear stick in my r32

is that good??

thanks simon

This wouldn't be the best for alloy's, however, if your talkin' interior parts, a cheap option could be to go to autobarn, buy some chrome film and glue it to your interior parts. If you do it right, your interior will come up with a flawless chrome finish.

nb: some autobarns don't carry the stuff, but they could probly order it for you.

    • This is a story of my life things, I learned eventually (thanks to someone calling me out) that my enthusiasm for discussing and sharing ideas that it came across as arrogance and I'm like... WTF?!    One thing I'm pretty sure I justifiably pride myself on is knowing that everyone will have things they can teach you, and you're always going to find out that something you think you know turns out wrong - you just don't know what it is until you get there.   Just the bursting enthusiasm that comes with ADHD when you hit something that gives you dopamine dumps can come across like you think everyone else is wrong or don't matter. But yeah, I'm a software engineer by trade and also do tuning in weekends and 100% have long had a reputation for  quickly making connections when resolving problems or forming solutions that I've sometimes had to take people form a long walk from start to end to explain how I ended up where I did when it's seemed "too simple" when I've stated my initial case, and had the "WTF" type reaction when they've realised how much was actually considered haha.   My reward is that I get all the curly problems thrown at me.
    • Wives never seem to find things funny. Especially when they're trying to sleep, and you've found the new funniest thing ever. I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar. So the household can get quite emotionally wild at times 😛
    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
    • Hi everyone! I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?
    • Yeah I've spotted this one too, whenever it's lotto superdraw week and I'm browsing car sales dot com for my new ride They must be dreaming, maybe it's worth 150k for the link to Brock?
