blind_elk
also not allowed to use handsfree mobiles. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Damn stupid idea. It's already unlawful to use hand-held, but it doesn't stop people using them while driving. What makes these bureaucrats think extending the rule will make the slightest difference. (being disqualified from driving doesn't stop some people from still hopping behind the wheel) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/84253-new-p-plater-laws/#findComment-1526248 Share on other sites

slow_r31
actually its not a bad idea, p platers in there first year can of had very little road experience, vs a p-plater who's had there license for several years. i think its a good idea to identify 1st year p-platers Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/84253-new-p-plater-laws/#findComment-1528441 Share on other sites

I think driver training is the only real solution, and they don't seem to give a stuff about even considering it. MerlinTheHapyPig
at the moment, it's just a proposal http://www.arrivealive.vic.gov.au/forms/ydsafety_1_form.php (follow link under 'additional information' to young driver discussion paper) check out the above link for more info. As mentioned, it's asking for public comment, so if you oppose these changes either use the online form on the above website. Or write to Discussion Paper – Young Driver Safety VicRoads Reply Paid 61943 KEW VIC 3101 I would think that most people on this forum might object to one of the suggested guidelines "Review high-powered vehicle provisions" Now is you chance to have a say on the issue, and I'd encourage everyeone to fill out the forum. P-platers are outnumbered by the rest of the car-driving community so it's important that as many people respond to this issue as possible. dezz
Wish they spent as much time getting old people off the road as they do P platers.. never had a p plater run into me but had a few trucks & old people almost kill me & mine :\ <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I just had my 2cents....well, it was more like a dollar... here's what i had to say : I think the proposed laws are a scapegoat. Changing the color of the plates that we as p-platers display WILL NOT reduce the road toll. Identifying first year and in-experienced drivers does nothing to reduce the road toll, it simply changes the color of that drivers plate. The only way to reduce the road toll, is to provide adequate driver training. The current system, is a joke. It all starts with the Learners permit. To gain this permit, it is not a requirement that you have ever operated a motor vehicle, but that you are able to read a book, and remember some road rules. In addition, there is no way to determine if an L plater is ready to move on to their P\'s...but in the current system, the only requirement is that you have had your L\'s for a certain amount of time (doesn\'t mean you\'ve driven much), and that you are 18 years old. Getting your P\'s is no more difficult in reality. When you attend driving lessons with an instructor, you are taught how to pass the test, not how to drive. Put simply, that is the problem. What is required is a change in the licensing system. Being able to read (or hear for that matter) and remember some laws, should not be all that is needed to put someone on the road. What is required is that drivers receive adequate training. Taking a few lessons and learning how to drive at speeds that hold up traffic, and how to parralel park, is not adequate at all. It doesn\'t even come close. Until there is a change in what is required to obtain a license, the road toll will not be reduced by any great amount. Banning P platers from driving \"High performance cars\" may save the odd life here or there, but it is not what is to blame for the high road toll among P platers. If we are banned from driving these \"high performance vehicles\" we will once again move on to the next level (full license) with no experience, yet will be aloud to buy the most powerful car we can afford. Change the licensing system so that we are taught to drive, how to operate a vehicle properly, and safely. Teach people how to react in the event of an emergency, not just how to park a car on a quiet street. Until driver training is reviewed, and changes are implemented in the licensing system, there will be no decline in the road toll. Banning \"performance cars\" is not the answer, as an idiot who can\'t drive will kill his or herself in any car, and possibly take others down with them. Wow, that is long, i wonder if it will even be read. lol ah well, its better than saying "let me drive my 300rwkw car because i get more roots in it" Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/84253-new-p-plater-laws/#findComment-1530405 Share on other sites
