My car is running really rich, however when I fire it up sometimes it spits out a lot of black shite. I assume this is just carbon deposits that built up in the cat. When I reved it before it was totally warm, it gave a slight puff of snow white smoke. My fuel pump is dieing and I intend on putting a new one in on the weekend and getting it retuned shortly after.

hmm white smoke, that doesnt sound good.

If your fuel pump is dieing you wont be running rich you would be leaning out, so im not sure why ur blowing black smoke, i get black smoke under heavy accerealtion due to running very very rich. also getting it when revin it abit when it just sitting there

Does it give white smoke everytime, u rev it when its cold?

all cars will blow white smoke before they are totally warm.. merely condensation within the exhaust system heating up and coming out.

if it blows white smoke after a say 10 minute drive. then you'l be looking for either seal on turbo or head gasket problems.

Ahh sweet yeah it was only really when it's warming up that I get white smoke, and black goo (which looks like pure carbon). After it's warmed up I get black clouds when accelerating. Thanks for that guys.

Do flames ever come out from the exhaust?

I think mine just had some carbon deposits which is why the fuel system cleaner got rid of it. Hit www.nulon.com.au and check out the fuel system cleaner.

Also, how does your oil look? and when did you change your oil last?

Black smoke on boost means its running rich.

so its not neccesarily something to be extremely worried about...like its not the engine dying etc...

he told me that with a turbo you want it to be running a bit rich...that accurate?

from what i've been told by my mechanic mate, grey smoke is more the car being cold, and condensation.

black smoke = burning fuel and white = burning oil...

so it doesnt matter if its black or white , its bad

lol

Close.

Black smoke = carbon, IE running rich

Bluish-white smoke = burning oil

Pure white smoke = burning coolant

As has been mentioned, white smoke during a cold start is normal from exhaust condensation.

i have a short video clip of a skyline idling...if someone is able to host it for me (its about 4mb) would you guys be able to tell me what the smoke is, and if its a problem etc...

or i could send it to you if you give me your msn

thanks for that mate...ok guys so i took that vid when checkin the car out...

it was on a cold start, ice cold engine basically, hadn't moved. had just been washed and was basically still a bit wet on the body. umm, that was just AFTER it had been revved n stuff. when it was revved that same color smoke just got a bit thicker...then died down to what u see in the idel vid..

so what are your thoughts? bad? nothing to even worry about?
