Hey Guys,

I'm considering about to import a skyline through an agent and as I've never done it before I've got a few questions which I'm sure you've answered 100's of times but please be patient

1. What do agents mean by “turned back to stock prior to compliance”. Exactly what is stock standard and what is legal and illegal?

2. If an item is removed, eg a BOV or exhaust, to make it stock, is it removed in Japan or Australia? If australia then what is done with the part?

3. Is it still mine to keep and take home with me?

4. Are tyres included in the package? If not, why?

1. Means as the car came from factory, ie, no aftermarket components. So if someone replaced the standard exhaust with an aftermarket one, to will have to be removed.

2. The work is carried out in Australia by the RAWS, in their workshop as part of the compliance process. As for the parts, I do believe that the workshops are supposed to record and destroy all non-standard parts taken off the car for complience - however you should confirm this with the workshop themselves.

Cheers for help mate. Now considering I've only been researching this whole importing thing for 2 hours, this is what I've concluded...

If want to import a car under 15 years of age it has to be taken back to stock standard by RAWS. Am I right?

Would I be correct in assuming that I should buy a stock standard skyline from Japan coz the A/M stuff is just gonna get trashed anyway?

is http://www.boostimports.com.au a decent importer?

If not then who is? Bearing in mind that I would like an agent to take care of everything for me and also include tyres.

no... forget anything you ever heard about the '15 year rule'.. it's done and finished now.

NOW, there is the pre 1989 rule.. eg anycar made before 1989 is eligable for import.

If you want to import a car that is made during or after 1989, then you must go through the specialist and enthusiast vechile shceme (SEVS) and have your car complied by a RAWS.

I've never heard of boostimports, so I can't comment on them. I imported through J-spec imports www.j-spec.com.au and was happy with their service. :rolleyes:

umm, ok. But I've been told that alot of importers actually put the car back to stock just to pass it through rego and stuff and then put all the mods back on. This way, I'm only paying for labour as I don't actually buy the stock parts. Is this commen practice?

We could go on all day about what could happen, what should happen, etc.

Kennedy the best option for you is to call a workshop and ask for their stance. If you are considering Boost Imports (I haven't actually heard of them), ask for details of their RAWS compliancer and ask them the question.

    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
    • Do you have an IAT sensor? It's worth checking it to see. You may be suprised how little gap you actually need to flood your engine with hot air. (I tape up my airbox for a reason) :p
    • @KinkstaahKrinkle paint the "silver" alloy, not the red filter frame Engine bay heat won't be a issue worth worrying about as the silver alloy blocks it off on 3 sides, as for the top, the bonnet seals most of it and the big OEM CAI intake snorkel is still fitted in its original position  I will head into Clark's Rubber when I have some time to grab some pinch weld to tidy up the alloy after I paint it As for performance, I honestly wasn't expecting any, the only reason I got it is because the intake noise sounds cool to my old ears when I'm feeding it the beans Sometimes it's the silly things you do in in life that gives the most fun, and I do love anything that makes cool car noises In other news: I survived 4 nights at sea with Jackie not throwing me over board, holidays are continuing now as we are currently chilling at the Beachcomber in Toukley, after taking the coast roads from Sydney in the MX5, top down all the way, Toukley is where I spent a good deal of my youth holidaying during the summer months, there's lots of reminiscing going on,  and lots of beaches and old houses to visit Next on the list is to head to Batemans Bay for a few days, but we will take the Commodore out to stretch its legs, then Commodore hasn't really moved for months
    • There’s probably people who’d like to do it and then when it comes to putting their hands in their pockets they’ll all disappear into the shadows 
    • interesting....sounds like the later trans has software differences (or AM vs JDM). If I wasn't going down the tuning route it would be worth looking into retrofitting a new computer to the old box.
