hey guys im interested in how much difference the extra capacity will have on turbo lag, and therefore effecting turbo choices

the engine is being rebuilt at the moment and currently the parts goin in are:

Jun 2.7L stroker crank

Jun cosworth forged pistons

Jun forged rods

nismo bearings

Jun oil pump

jun titanium retainers

jun 272 degree cams with 11.35mm lift

jun HD valve springs

Jun cam gears

Jun head studs

Jun big end bolts

sard 1000cc injectors

trust t04 flanged single turbo manifold

autronics SMC and CDI

sard fuel rail

sard adjustable fuel reg

single magnafuel 1000hp fuel pump

msd coils

custom 9L baffled sump

50mm hks external wastegate

oil cooler kit

100mm+ thick jap cooler (still lookin for one)

and now im after what turbo would be suitable for response more than power, and im wanting 500hp at wheels daily and capable of upto around 600hp at wheels for dyno sessions.

im thinking gt30 is too small, and same with gt35

so gt40, gt42 or new garret t04z with a 1.06 exhuast housing?

prefer the garret choices as the hks stuff etc is bloody pricey and ill be changing to a larger one in the future anyway to see what it can really do :P

any info appreciated

Brad

The capacity increase alone without taking into account the other planned mods aint going to do a significant amount in the way of reducing lag.

Going to 2.7 from 2.6 is a displacement increase of ~4%. So in theory a turbo would operate ~4% earlier in the rev range to an equivalent 2.6.

Are u using an N1 block as well. The 2.7lt kit is for crazy revs most drag and dyno 2.7lts rev out to 11000rpm witch is were you get the extra power band.

nope normal block :P

600hp isnt excessive on a rb26 block is it? 10 000rpm redline is the plan ;)

Hi Brad heard about this project and have done a bit of digging. The same motor just been built in perth and has twin 2530's making 500hp at 16psi with awesome response great carto drive by all accounts, here comes my point another gtr rb26 with 87mm pistons making it nearly 2.7 runs a single garret to4z with the 81 or 86 housing has the same power curve and response but running 20psi at 520hp with a bit more room to move. For my money i would be going the garret with the same housing dont make the mistake of going to big as they make good hp but are no fun on the street.

cheers

Danny

MMMM, this list of parts looks a lot like "4 Door Gtr's" old parts list he had for sale!

Anyway, I would look into the GT40 or the T04Z. Ben from Racepace runs the GT42R on his 3Ltr track GTR. But correct me if I'm wrong. With your camshaft set up at 11.35 lift generally means your car will not be that streetable. I spoke to 4 Door Gtr on the phone about his set up and he said it was far too lumpy for the street.

If you really want to know about which turbo is best suited for your set up give Lance at Croydon Racing a call. Try their website too (www.croydonracingdevelopments.com).

Hope this helps in some way!

500 HP daily and 600 for dyno runs and response over power - from 2700cc's .

The Americans have played with a system of a centrifugal supercharger blowing through an exhaust driven turbocharger with good results but it needs a bit of thought put into by pass systems . I don't know if there's any other way of making it streetable without more capacity - I would have given serious thought to the RB30/31 conversion as I'm told 600HP is a walk in the park with suitable hardware . The GT40R would do well on a street driven RB31 Dyno Queen . These are not common yet but will get some details .

Cheers A .

nope normal block

i hope not im in the same boat but with stock crank. i just thought with a list like that a N1 block as well. That way when the bug bites u can do something similer to the car in HPI 56

His is a custom RacePace turbo (1000hp) that he made to his own specs, punches out well over 600rwhp. You cant compare anything to that car. League of its own.

Anyhow, GT35 is the way to go. I doubt you'll need much bigger.

It'll be extremely streetable (with smaller cams) and still give you the mumbo around the 500hp mark, probably a bit less... 460-480 if you talk to the right people and get a decent turbo made from the GT35 options.

On some good fuel for a few dyno runs with big boost you'll get close to the 600hp mark :P but probably not quite. Again... 570-580 approx at a guess.

If you drop your expectations by 30hp (22kw) then you'll get into very do-able territory IMO

And yeah, as others, why monster cams? You certainly dont need it, not do you need 10,000rpm to make these numbers :P

geez ide love to have that engine to play with

in my opinion the best response/power combo with a built engine would be twin HKS GT-RS, capable of 400-500rwkw and can handle upto 2bar without a problem

thats assuming you want twins, single probably the new (well new-ish) HKS TO4Z

R31Nismoid READ what I wrote. I recommended the GT40 and the T04Z. I merely stated that Ben ran a GT42R and at no point did I compare Ben's set up to StageZilla's.

According to Ben the GT35R is a fairly small turbo for a standard capacity RB26 so using it on a 2.7 ????? . My advice; do the research ask someone in the know! Call a reputable performance center. There are places that make custom turbo's for specific set ups.

its hardly what most would get when "buying a GT42" as its totally different to what comes off the shelf

yeah the 35 isnt the biggest you can run on a 2.7... but its personal thoughts i express there if he drops his power aims.

If he doesnt then your gonna need bigger.

Also to note, JAGR33 made 370rwkw with the twin Trust turbos.

Thats pretty mad for pulp and 20psi

okay guys cheers for all the info and comments :D

well i have bought a combo of stuff and the jun stroker kit together with the cams, so i thought stuff it ill get cams which wont be a big drama as i only drive it a few hundred kays a week as i have a work car :)

i want a combo ready for future when i wanna see what it can do with a monster turbo like gt45 or something and the engine combo is rated at 750-800hp at wheels from the JUN head guy. :)

the combo was goin on a demo car for the same shop that did the r34 and the deal didnt work out and i got lucky ;)

also i got the trust single turbo manifold with the combo and it looks awesome so i wanna try a big single :)

im gonna go hks t04z in the future, but ill most likely try the garret t04z 0.86 first and see what it can do :D

the jun stroker kit is made for reving not capacity thats why its only 2.7L which i presume is better for circuit work with the large rpm range :)

turbo should make boost by 4000rpm i reckon and revving to 10 000rpm its a bloody decent power band rather than a 3L doin 3000rpm to 7000rpm or about that :)

each to their own

Brad

post the results

will do and maybe might try some smaller low mounts again in the future if its too laggy, but i like the idea of a roomier engine bay and easy to work on :D

cheers
