R32 Gtr Voltage Gauge Reading 18v

The car started doing this yesterday after a short trip.

Initially I thought the gauge might be faulty, then i noticed the ABS light coming on when cruising (voltage >18V) then going out when idling (<18V).

Drove around quite a bit today and started smelling battery acid. Got home, engine idling and popped the bonnet - discovered smoke and battery fluid coming out of the battery vents.

Anyone experience anything like this before?? Not sure where to start. I'm thinking dodgy alternator??

Faulty voltage regulator is causing the battery to over-charge and the battery acid to boil. Regulator is built into to alternator, so it's either get the regulator replaced by an auto-elec or replace the alternator. Suggest getting it done soon and drive the car as little as possible until it's fixed as some electrical components may not take kindly to seeing 18V+.

Make sure you wash away any acid that may have leaked from the battery with plenty of water.

anyone know if r32/r33/r34 rb20/rb25/rb26's use the same alternator??

use boiling water to wash away any dry battery acid. do it asap cuase it eats away the paint. happened to my bros car
