Hi all;

I am thinking of buying an S Type Jag 1999 model and have found a low kilometre (60k) example which seems to be in great condition.

The one thing the owner said was that he just had some work done on the transmission, according to him they have a weakness and all S types need to be operated on to rectify this inherint problem.

Having bugger all knowledge on Jags let alone the S Type, i have done hours of research on the net and most reviews were good.

I was hoping that some of you might have had some knowlegde/experience on the 1999-2002 models, whether a parent/relative or someone you know having one.

I am concrened about reliability and cost of repair issues, especially common faults that they may posses.

If you can share any experiences i would be grateful.

Cheers

I worked for Jag in 1999 as a valeter and can confirm the transmission point. Worked in the UK for a local dealer there and used to cycle with the mechanics so often ended up chatting about the cars.

Cars were having the transmission replaced as soon as 8000 miles which is horendous considering the purchase price.

If you need any more info send me a PM, I will see what I can recall.

cheers mate..

the drive train apparently is Ford which is very sad considering the badge's history/reputation, not to mention the price tag.

i will pm you if i need further questions, your experience will be very valuable.

Have not heard that about the drivetrain but could well be true. I can certainly get you contact details for dealerships over there and even the one that was local to me. Also apparently very bad for rusting as well although I dont know if that is as bad when not on UK roads. I actually got a uni placement with them for 9 months at head office in Coventry but declined it to come over here. B)

They engines also dont reach prime until what would be quite high KM's for any other cars. Figures that I remember were around the 150K mile mark so not sure what that is in KM's. Tyres were also stupidly expensive at 250quid each. They also dont pack the punch of the XKR!

yes i also read that the tyres were expensive(american review though) and having test driven one for a reasonable amount of time i agree about the punch..

what i love about the car though is the styling especially the front(back is a bit droopy) and the interior..rides very smooth as well..

I thought Jag=Ford?

well after Ford's acquisition of Jag, they initiated the s-type project and unfortunately used a lot of ford bits...

but i also read somewhere that although parts were ford, Jag engineers modified them heavily...

sounds like though they didnt do a great job with the tranny.
