With so many catch cans on sale through the forums these days they seem like a pretty popular upgrade for vehicles but I am yet to be convinced as to what they actually do.

What do they actually do? Is there any point in the point of modifying a motor that they become a necessity? Or are people just buying them without a real need for them?

I just don't want to go spend money unnecessarily if they the need isn't there for one when I can spend money elsewhere.

They're not essential.. maybe if your fulsik drift car is nearly shagged and about to split a ring.. but you can probably get by without one.

I pulled my piping off some of my fmic piping and there is absolutely zero coating in the inside at all, whereas there used to be a little bit, so mine seems to be workng there.

well I find the GTR makes so much "G" loading that the oil tends to want to find its way into the intake via the turbos and intercooler... then leaning your nice A/F mixture ...... till BANG! :(

and I dont like cleaning out all the pipes on a weekly basis!

BTW I am looking at running 2 catch cans like the BSM race GT-R that SK is involved with.....

i cannot vouch for them enough...i guess it depends what car though also. For the Skylines you can probably get away without one but better off to have one and not risk fouling plugs and so on. I was at Eastern Creek today and not a drop of oil went into the intake, car performed solidly all day...minus that exhaust gasket...curse that gasket...

Ran a Merc out at Oran park few months back and it dumped so much oil into the intake it was actually pouring out through the intake and over the front chrome grille. Also fouled up the plugs to thepoint where the car would barely accelerate at all...

tommyk maybe you are not driving it on the track? and by that I mean around corners....

I now have baffles in the cam covers + a catch tank setup..... however it still needs a little work, so will be adding the barrel type tank near the strut brace to catch the initial vapour....

I don't have the nice plumb back, as I'd like to keep the engine intake clean....and fueled up!

catch cans are good for engines with 100,000 kms + and high RPM.

I had one on my old RB20 and it was nessacery for drift as there was excessive blowby at 6000rpm but for normal road use you dont need one otherwise they would be a factory inclusion

hmm, i will have to check my intercooler piping again but last time i checked it there was zero and i mean nothing in the way of oil in my intercooler pipes. And it has seen a few track days this year. RB26 i'm talking about.

Williams, are you still getting that much blow by after the rebuild?

No oil comes out of the hoses. They are clear hoses, and theres nothing coming out of them, so no problems there. Also where I live there are no emissions testing or inspections or anything of that type of nature, so you can get away with non-street legal everything B)

A catch can is not needed. Instead of paying $100 + for a can, run your hoses to the bottom of the engine bay, and simply have them vent to the air.

Err ... would this not pose a hazard for other road users when they drive through your oil? :D

    • And I forgot to add my *** footnote to the above post, which was that the pipework mods would be even more significant than what had to be done for the highflow. So just add that onto the list. Pipework mods are no killer, just made the tasklist longer at a time when extra tasks were not welcome.

    • Ah ok, reason I asked was for the sake of not having to upgrade everything if the turbo couldn't be capped.
    • pffft! My alignments are starting to take 3-4 weeks each. Bugger overnight - that would be a dream! Overnight is when I leave it on stands with the rear suspension in pieces, hoping I can remember where I was at when I come back to it. I have to set the car up on a level surface so I can get decent camber measurements, then try to set the RUCAs to the right length to get that right. Then I have to put the car somewhere else where I have enough room to set up the bumpsteer gauge (laser, paper, mirror), so I can dial out that. Then I need to go measure camber again because changing the tension arm length affects that also. Then I need to measure toe, and I can't do that to my own satisfaction at home, so I have to put it on an actual aligner. Then I have to go back and fix the camber again, and if that took more than a half a turn, decide if I want to set up the bumpsteer measurements again. I previously had the bumpsteer almost completely banished and then I started changing things again! And that's only the rear end. Not even gotten to talking about the front yet. And this has been going on in the context of me discovering a seized bolt in the LHR FUCA bush at the upright, hence needing total disassembly to replace that bush and the others that were not far away from the same outcome, replacing sphericals in the front end and making a mistake that resulted in needing to do it again, which is only half done right now. It's a selfmade nightmare. Only have self to blame, etc etc. But regardless, I am so complelely unable to utilise the services of a normal wheel aligner that I have no choice. I haven't found a shop in my city that does "race" alignments - and by that I don't mean I want my car to be set up for racing, but the set of adjustments that I have available and that need to be used to do the alignment are the same as you'd find on a race car. I haven't looked everywhere, but there doesn't appear to be the equivalent of the motorsport focused shops that are present in Sydney and Melbourne. And such an alignment would cost $300, and you only want to do it once in a while, and you don't want to find out that you have to replace bushes and bearings and such while you are spending that $300 so you have to come back and spend it again a week later. So I stay living in my self made nightmare for the moment.
