I had my powersteering pump replaced recently and I still notice my steering goes really heavy whenever the revs are right down. I suspect the alternator is packing it in. I intend to measure the voltage as soon as my car is running again, however I was wondering how hard these things are to install and what choices in alternator there are for an R32 RB26dett? Any help would be appreciated :).

damn R32s.. !

First off, check that all the connections on the back of the alterator are correct, particularly the plugs.

As with anything on a Skyline, it will require the removal of much more than the component of interest to achieve the desired result.

It's probably because the engine isn't turning the pump as fast at idle and so the steering becomes a bit heavier. There should be a fast idle switch that kicks up the revs by about 2-300rpm when you turn the wheel at idle.

Im with dave, The altenator shouldn't have anything to do with your power steering getting heavy..... I mean the P/S pump is mechanical right?

In the commodores they have a bypass valve that would sometimes get stuck open and the car would think your driving along the highway so it would keep the P/S heavy.

Ok thanks a lot guys, will have a look. The car was running perfectly yesterday (just put an 044 in) until about an hour of driving, then the steering got really heavy to the point of not having power steering (big deep sigh). Anyway after it had cooled down the powersteering was back to perfect... this doesn't bode well.. bloody 32s! :)

Just my 2c on this...

I took my car in to the local mechanics to get a gearbox service...i'd been noticing some misfire/power drain in lower rev ranges for a couple weeks... when i went to pick the car up, they reported that my alternator was dead.... sure enough, driving home I noticed the change, crappy idling and a power drain in the steering when turning corners.... alt was totally stuffed and needed new regulator and bearings. Now that its been reconditioned the steering is excellent and idle is all back to norm.... seems that perhaps the power steering doesnt like not having 14v avail to use.... anyhow its all fixed and running nicely so i cant complain... for now ;D
