Oil For Cold Conditions

i just moved to the hills where in the morning when i start my car it is usually below 5 degrees and my motor has developed a loud tapping i was wondering what oil you guys recommend.

When on the coast i ran pennzoil gt performance 25w50.

25w50 seems pretty think even for normal conditions, unless your engine has a fair bit of wear and needs it, speaking of which what type of engine are we talking about here?

I used $60 Shell Ultra 5w40 in my GTR

but most people like Mobil 1 5w50 which is about $10 more

25w50 is thick....

Broadly, the first number in the viscosity sequence (X W Y) is the low temperature viscosity. So a 5W40 is less viscous (thinner, if you will) at low temperatures than a 25W50 oil. The other number is the high temperature viscosity, hence a 5W50 oil will be more viscous than a 5W40 oil at higher temperatures. I can't remember what the two temperatures are, but they form part of a standard of sorts.

We use Castrol Formula R Synthetic 0W-40 in the Blue Mountains

If you park you car in a garage, put a rug (or a piece of old carpet) under the engine. That will stop the concrete sucking out all of the temperature overnight.
